The Violet Eye is a secret sect founded by the Kirin Tor of Dalaran, they were assigned to keep an eye on Karazhan and to spy on the Guardian of Tirisfal Medivh and his works. Although Medivh was dead for decades, and Karazhan somehow sealed itself off to the outside world, the Violet Eye remained to study the tower and the effects of its magic disturbances on Deadwind Pass.[1]
As Karazhan is a portal into Twisting Nether, a beacon shining into other worlds, it's the Violet Eye's mission to ensure that the tower doesn't fall into the wrong hands, or the possible repercussions would be unthinkable.[2] When the tower reopened and Prince Malchezaar took control of it, the Violet Eye fought to regain control of Karazhan with the help of the adventurers. Years later, they faced the Legion once more during the third invasion of Azeroth, when Viz'aduum the Watcher was tasked by Kil'jaeden to use Karazhan as a conduit to every world consumed during the Burning Crusade.
The heroes who provided aid and service received the Violet Signet, a magical ring that grew in power as they continued to prove their worth and loyalty to the Violet Eye. The higher their reputation with the organization, the more Archmage Leryda released the power contained in the signet to reward them. And for those who exceeded the expectations of the mages, achieving the highest honor available to non-citizens of Dalaran, the ring became as powerful as those of the archmages of the Kirin Tor and a symbol so that the initiated may recognize their allegiance.[3]
History
Among the agents the Violet Eye sent to infiltrate Karazhan, Koren the blacksmith was under their pay.[4] Though not an official member, he pretended to serve Medivh and helped the Violet Eye to keep a close eye on him.[5] The spy Keanna was also present in the tower, where she was staying up at the guest chambers.[6] After Medivh was killed, Karazhan sealed itself off to the outside world, and the agents remained locked inside, while their allies outside never heard from any of them again.[7] Inside, the agents died for unknown reasons, and the tower's magic notably prevented Koren's soul from finding eternal rest.
For unknown reasons, Khadgar had many disagreements with Archmage Cedric in the past, but still considers that the work that men like Archmage Alturus do is important.[8] On the field, Archmage Alturus is a high ranking member of the Violet Eye responsible for gathering information about the state of Karazhan, while his immediate supervisor is Archmage Cedric at Dalaran Crater. At some point, Cedric assigned Apprentice Darius to help Alturus in his tasks and research.[9]
World of Warcraft
Years after the Third War, a Dalaran Agent of the Violet Eye traveled to Ariden's Camp in Deadwind Pass, where she investigated after several powerful artifacts disappeared from the Kirin Tor's vaults in Dalaran. While it was impossible for outsiders to enter the city, their scryers glimpsed a group of seven hooded figures on horseback, matching the old stories of the Dark Riders of Karazhan. However, unable to feel the Riders' presence, she tasked adventurers to bring her any of the stolen artifacts they could find, and gave them the Ariden's Sigil that would react and force a Rider out of its hiding, since they are invisible unless they wish to be seen.[10] When the adventurers brought her the artifacts, she thanked them and announced that she would bring them safely back to Dalaran, as any one of them would have been a serious danger to Azeroth in the wrong hands.[11]
The Burning Crusade
After the reopening of the Dark Portal, Archmage Alturus sent Apprentice Tasserel to look for assistance in Shattrath City. While stuck in the Lower City, he nevertheless managed to convince adventurers to help the cause of the Violet Eye at Karazhan. In the meantime, he looked for a way to access the rest of the city after hearing the rumor that an old associate of theirs was present somewhere.[12]
When the adventurer arrived, Archmage Alturus tasked them to discover the reason for the ghosts around Karazhan, precisely to gather some of their essences to study them.[13] He also sent them with a scrying crystal to obtain an imprint of Karazhan's energy, and discovered that the haunted tower was no longer emanating all manner of arcane currents, but instead, became a huge energy vacuum with a very faint demonic echo.[14] After it was reported, Archmage Cedric sent the adventurer to meet Khadgar in Shattrath, as he was the only one who could reopen Karazhan so that Violet Eye could act.[7]
With the help of Khadgar,[15] and somehow of Medivh in the past,[16] the adventurers managed to reform The Master's Key. Before they left, Khadgar told them to be careful that the Violet Eye didn't try to use them, for they were the ones with the key, but that if their investigations were true, then it would be important to help them.[8] Once Karazhan was reopened, Archmage Alturus sent the adventurer to assess the situation inside and to find Keanna's Log, an encoded log of all her observations, and advised them to seek help from the ghost Koren.[17] Once in possession of the log, they discovered that Keanna had detected the arrival of a Burning Legion agent at the top of the tower before her death.[2]
For all their help, the adventurer was rewarded by Archmage Alturus, as in his own words, gaining the favor of the archmages of Dalaran is not something one can regret. However, Archmage Cedric later explained that it wasn't over, as it was only a matter of time until the demons renewed their attacks while the Violet Eye stood powerless on the sidelines. The archmage then asked once more for the help of the adventurers to put an end to the plans of the Legion.[18]
In the meantime, the Violet Eye sent three agents to track down Medivh's Journal, but none of them came out and the adventurer had to accomplish their mission.[19] Inside, the agents Wravien, Gradav, Kamsis, somehow succumbed to the dark magic of Karazhan during their investigation,[20] dooming their souls to relive their final moments forever.[21][22] Despite the curse, they still managed to help the adventurer who brought back the diary to Archmage Alturus.[23]
With the information and memories inside, centered on the battle between Medivh and Arcanagos, Archmage Alturus determined that this was an opportunity for them to retrieve some of the Guardian's magical essence from the blue dragon's remains.[24] Once in possession of one of the bones, he sent the adventurer to meet Kalynna Lathred in Netherstorm, a former member of the Kirin Tor in pursuit of knowledge forbidden, in order to raise the dragon back from the dead.[25] With her help, the adventurers managed to resurrect Arcanagos as the undead dragon Nightbane, and after they defeated him, they brought the essence to Alturus, who announced that this would reveal vital information about Medivh.[26]
Legion and aftermath
At the time of the third invasion of the Burning Legion, when the Legion forces marched into Karazhan, Moroes saw this as a sign of Medivh's return and killed Apprentice Darius. According to Archmage Alturus, the Legion's arrival was no surprise, as the power they coveted beneath the tower had already existed for a long time.[27] Alturus and Archmage Leryda, alongside a few mages of the Kirin Tor, were later seen holding off the demonic reinforcements from reaching the gates of the Master's Cellar. When the adventurer arrived, Leryda asked them to push the demons back, because if the Legion forces had continued to grow, the Violet Eye would not have been able to hold their ground.[9]
After his death, Darius became a ghost and was granted the rank of mage posthumously. He then received the new charge of sprucing up the tower, in order for it to be a bit more inviting in case Archmage Khadgar had further need of it.[28] Now able to enter the tower safely, Darius enlisted the help of the adventurers in his tasks to clear Karazhan of the vermin inside,[29][30] to calm the ghosts in the Opera Hall,[31] and to disable The Curator once more.[32]
When the heroes had to defeat Nightbane over again, Darius remarked that Archmage Alturus' idea of raising an undead dragon back to life, in order to study the Guardian's powers, hadn't been such a good idea on the long term.[33]
Years later, members of the Violet Eye continued to keep watch over the grounds on behalf of the Kirin Tor and send reports to Archmage Khadgar.[34]

Koren <The Blacksmith> is a human ghost blacksmithing vendor located in the Livery Stables in the instance of Karazhan. In life he was under the pay of the Violet Eye, the secret sect founded by the Kirin Tor to spy on Medivh, but was not a member himself.[35] Koren seems to pass on his information in a casual, conversational manner, helping out agents of the Violet Eye with subjects a humble blacksmith "just happens" to know of, rather than acting in a secretive, straight forward manner.
Koren will offer his vendor and repair services to you once you are at least honored with the Violet Eye.
He is also present during the Return to Karazhan.

I'm afraid I'm rather busy fixing horseshoes at the moment. Would you mind coming back at another time?

You know about the Violet Eye then? Maybe I'll have time for you later.
I have to get back to my work.
- Exalted
I once served Medivh... or pretended to. I helped the Violet Eye keep a close eye on the Master.
But now all I can think of is... making horseshoes. Over and over.
I'm in need of your skill as a blacksmith, Koren.
