Also known as desert trolls, the sand trolls inhabit the Tanaris desert of southern Kalimdor, near the ancient Qiraji Empire. Their capital city is located at Zul'Farrak,[1] and they do not seem to have any further settlements outside this stronghold. Their proximity to Gadgetzan brings them into frequent conflict with the Goblin Trade Princes, the Horde and the Alliance. Sand trolls seem to follow a shamanistic path of Voodoo similar to their jungle troll brothers, and hold reverence for a mysterious summoned creature called Gahz'rilla.

History

The chaos of the Great Sundering isolated one of the tribes that had been living in the fringes of the Gurubashi empire. The relentless desert sun of Tanaris beat down on the trolls, who gradually adapted to their harsh new environment.

The sand trolls have never formed an empire. In fact, they have gradually been forced to surrender much of their lands in Tanaris, though they are defending their current territory with great tenacity. Sand trolls mostly keep to themselves and attack all outsiders.[1]

Society

Sand trolls seem to have one of the most diverse number of social units in their society, ranging from Axe Throwers, Hideskinners, Blood Drinkers, Guardians and Executioners who act as the warriors and hunters of Zul'Farrak, to the Shadow Hunters, Soul Eaters, Firecallers and Witch Doctors who are potent Voodoo casters. It is rumored that slaves are also employed by the Sandfury tribe as warriors, and extra labour. A number of priest-type trolls such as Zealots and Acolytes seem to be at the core of the sand troll civilisation, acting as religious leaders. Drudges and Cretins seem to perform the menial labour, similar to the role of peons.

Appearance

The sand trolls have adapted to their harsh new environment, and today they bear only a rough resemblance to the jungle trolls from whom they are descended.[2] The sand trolls' skin is coarse and cracked, and its color tends to be brown or gold. Sand trolls also have thinner manes of hair than their brethren.[1] Also, unlike most other trolls, their tusks are black instead of ivory-colored.
