The Trollbane family is the human royal family of the kingdom of Stromgarde.
Background
Around 2,800 BDP, Lord Ignaeus was the leader of the Alteraci human tribe[1] and a prominent general of the Arathorian Empire during the Troll Wars. With his northlanders, he stalked well beyond Arathor's borders, slaughtering any trolls they came across, and earned the name "Trollbane" for the amount of Amani blood he spilled.[2] Trol'kalar was his legendary sword, whose name means "troll slayer" in the ancient tongue of Arathor,[3] and became a precious family heirloom.[4]
Around 1,200 BDP, one thousand years or so after Strom's founding, the departure of Thoradin's ruling descendants left the capital in the hands of a few ruling families who were too stubborn to leave, including the Trollbane family, children of the legendary and feared general Ignaeus Trollbane who ascend the throne. They rebuilt the crumbling infrastructure and renamed the city Stromgarde.[5]
For generations, the Trollbane family and their soldiers fought the Witherbark trolls, considering them as sworn enemies of Stromgarde and a curse upon the land of Arathi.[6]
During the Second War, Danath made a name for himself as a great leader during the final battle for the liberation of Khaz Modan, and was considered one of Stromgarde's most celebrated soldiers and one of the war's most prominent veterans. His status as a great general and fighter later elevated him to the position of Overseer at the orcish internment camps system in Azeroth, based at New Stormwind.[7][8]
At some point after the death King Terenas Menethil II during the Third War,[9] King Thoras was murdered by his son, Prince Galen. However, before he died Thoras was aware Galen was the one responsible, and Galen was aware that Thoras knew it was him.[10] Not long after, Stromgarde came under siege by forces of the Syndicate and the Boulderfist ogres; and while the traitorous prince desperately tried to retake the ruined kingdom, he also personally took charge of guarding the Trollbane family crypt.
During the Burning Legion's third invasion, Danath returned on Azeroth after he was recalled from Honor Hold to aid the Alliance in its darkest hour.[11] Around the same time, Galen declared himself king of a now undead-inhabited Stromgarde, but was ultimately slain by the Knights of the Ebon Blade when he tried to betray them.[12] On the orders of the Lich King Bolvar Fordragon, the Deathlord raised King Thoras who joined the ranks of the new Four Horsemen to protect the world once more.[13]
By the time of the Fourth War, Danath returned to Stromgarde Keep as the new leader of the kingdom, and led the Stromgarde army during the Battle for Stromgarde.
