The Fel Hammer is a large Legion ship located on Mardum that serves as the Illidari's headquarters. It acts as the Order Hall for demon hunters. Once one of the Burning Legion's most valuable assets, this citadel was created to spearhead Legion invasions on other worlds. It was occupied by Brood Queen Tyranna and her forces, who were tasked by Sargeras himself with the safeguarding of the Sargerite Keystone. When the Illidari invaded Mardum to retrieve the Keystone, they defeated the Fel Hammer's demonic inhabitants and conquered it in the name of their master, Illidan Stormrage.

History

Invasion of Mardum

The Fel Hammer.

During the invasion of Mardum in 26 ADP, Brood Queen Tyranna, who ruled over the demonic world from the Fel Hammer, had been entrusted by Sargeras with the Sargerite Keystone, a skeleton key capable of opening portals to all Legion worlds. After he ran out of time to enact his original plan of opening a portal to Argus with the Seal of Argus,[1] Illidan Stormrage sent his Illidari forces to Mardum to retrieve the Keystone in his plan to assault the Legion's homeworld,[2] killing Tyranna in the process and taking control of the command ship.[3][4]

After retrieving the artifact, the demon hunters returned to the Black Temple while the rest of the Illidari stayed behind.[5] Legion reinforcements arrived soon after they left for Outland, destroying the portal behind them. A glorious battle then ensued, and in the aftermath, the Illidari forces uncovered the ancient Cursed Forge of the Nathrezim, which was used to create many of the Legion's most powerful weapons.[6] The latter have dutifully held the citadel since the Slayer's departure, but were unable to access most of its resources, as the Fel Hammer could only be activated by those bearing the mark of a Legion lord.[7]

The Fel Hammer's upper floor.

During the third invasion of the Burning Legion in 32 ADP, Jace Darkweaver made contact with the Illidari forces on Mardum, who kept control of the Fel Hammer for years.[8] The artifact weapons were used to open a portal there,[9] while Kil'jaeden's mark on them was used activate the Legion ship.[7] From their new headquarters, the Illidari began their operations across the Broken Isles, sacrificing the souls of hundreds demons to empower the Nether Crucible, which they used to spy on the Tomb of Sargeras.[10][11]

When the Illidari returned to the Fel Hammer with the demon hunter Loramus Thalipedes,[12] who shared the body of the nathrezim Razelikh the Defiler, they had to lock him within a magical prison where they could make use of his knowledge without risking the demon's escape.[13]

Aboard the ship, the Illidari later managed to contact Illidan's soul within the Twisting Nether, using the blood of demons[14] and several magical resources requested by Matron Mother Malevolence.[15] Their master revealed that Akama knew of his plans to defeat the Legion, tasking them to convince him to rejoin their cause, as well as retrieve the Sargerite Keystone.[16][17] After their expedition at the Black Temple, images of [Caria and Varedis Felsoul appeared before the Illidari, inviting them to join the Legion.[18] When the demon hunters refused Kil'jaeden's final order to become Felsworn, the demon lord promised his servants would deal with them.[19]

Legionfall

The Fel Hammer fires on invading Legion ships.

The Fel Hammer comes under attack by the Burning Legion, who bombard it with more ships and board it. The first thing the demons did was disable the Fel Hammer's weapons, allowing them to board unhindered. After the Illidari fight them off, Lady S'theno and Kor'vas Bloodthorn agree to use the ship's damaged weapons to blast the Legion out of the sky, even if it risks the Fel Hammer.[20] Afterward, S'theno travels to the Broken Shore to lead the team searching for materials to repair the ship.[21] It is eventually fixed.[22]

The Illidari were still using the Fel Hammer a decade later. Arator, Turalyon, and Alleria visit it to ask Kayn Sunfury about recent demonic activity on the Broken Isles. While Arator was welcomed as a friend of Kayn's, the Illidari were colder to his parents because of how Turalyon had attacked Illidan on Argus.[23]
