This article contains lore taken from Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal, the manuals, and/or official bonus maps.

These unfortunate warriors gave their lives in battle only to be brought back into soulless servitude by arcane Orc magiks to fight for the Horde. Rising up from the battlefield, the Undead tirelessly hack and slash at their terrified enemies. These skeletal horrors retain none of the personality or emotions that permeated their living bodies and thus will do their master's bidding until they are destroyed. Only mortal creatures such as the Humans, Elves, Orcs, Trolls, and Ogres can be bound by these dark powers and be remade into the Undead.[1]

Notes

A Skeleton as seen in the Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness manual.
  • Skeletons are referred to as the Undead in the Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness manual.
  • They are weak and slow units that can be raised by a Death Knight's Raise Dead spell. They are therefore best used as a distraction or to cover one's retreat. They become more useful if there is no gold left on the map, because even a weak unit can be a significant asset in those circumstances.
  • Some Skeletons are found already placed on the map in campaign or custom missions, usually serving as "neutral" forces that act as buffers between players or guard certain areas or resources - these can be seen as an early version of Creeps, a concept that was further developed in Warcraft III.
    • Though Skeletons can only be created by a Horde only spell, in the World Editor Skeletons can be put into the same team color as an Alliance army.
  • They are extremely vulnerable to the Exorcism spell of paladins.
Only the bodies on the left can be raised; the others are still too fresh.
