Critters are neutral, harmless creatures that generally appear often in skirmish maps or campaign missions in Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness and Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal. They can take the form of sheep, seals, boars, or helboars. Critters usually wander around the map during the battle or stay in concentrated areas. They can be attacked and killed by player units and will not fight back. Alternatively, as an in-game joke, rapidly clicking on a critter multiple times will cause it to explode and die. A unit may also be transformed into a critter by a Polymorph spell.
Critters can be targeted by spells. While this seems pointless at first glance, casting spells such as Flame Shield or Death Coil on them can be useful in certain situations.
Computer players do not deliberately target Critters. Therefore, computer-controlled units may get confused or stuck if they encounter many Critters in a small area.
Note that the type of critter that appears in a game depends on the specific tileset. For example, in a Summer map setting, only sheep will appear as the default critter. In a Winter map type, seals will appear as the default critter (note that they cannot enter the water). In a Wasteland map setting, boars will appear as critters. And in a Swamp map type, helboars will appear as the default critter.

Trivia
If annoyed, sheep will say "Baa-ram-ewe" which is a reference to the sheep's password from Babe, the gallant pig.
