The Wintergarde Mausoleum is a sprawling catacomb located beneath the Carrion Fields in the Dragonblight. It was built by the human inhabitants of Wintergarde Village (what is now the Carrion Fields)[1] and contains an "endless supply"[2] of "a thousand-thousand corpses".[1] The Valiance Expedition who built Wintergarde Keep above the village[3] were unaware of the mausoleum's existence.[1] After the Scourge forces from Naxxramas destroyed Wintergarde Village,[4] the Scourge ground commander Thel'zan the Duskbringer sent his most powerful forces into the mausoleum to raise its corpses and souls against Wintergarde Keep.[5] The Valiance Expedition later learned of the mausoleum's existence from Mayor Godfrey, at which point High Commander Halford Wyrmbane sent Ambo Cash and the 7th Legion to assault it.[1]

The Wintergarde Mausoleum has a layout similar to that of Duskwood's Dawning Wood Catacombs and is split between two sections. The main, eastern section is entered via a building in the center of the Carrion Fields, almost directly below Naxxramas.[85.6, 49.8] Directly inside, Ambo Cash leads a small 7th Legion holdout flanked by two side crypts filled with ghouls.[6] One level below, down a flight of stairs, are two more side crypts being emptied by the necrolords Horus and X'avius, accompanied by forces from Naxxramas.[7] Past these is an embalming chamber where the Scourge experiments on corpses from the mausoleum's western section. A well-concealed tunnel (not shown on the minimap) connects the eastern and western sections.[2]

The western section is accessible via a tunnel dug by the Scourge[8] just outside the eastern walls of Wintergarde Keep.[82.12, 50.5] This section consists of the mausoleum's two large crypts, inhabited by bone golems created from whatever bodies the Scourge couldn't reanimate,[2] and a summoning chamber with "what appears to be a gateway to hell". Following adventurers' efforts, Lord Bolvar Fordragon commands the 7th Legion, led by Legion Commander Yorik, to enter the summoning chamber and launch a full assault against Thel'zan[8] by coaxing him out of hiding with his phylactery.[9]
