Kalisthene is an Ascended kyrian located in Bastion. She is the Polemarch of Bastion having succeded Adrestes after he became the Paragon of Devotion. Before that her duty was to oversee and advise aspirants and, after the anima drought started, conserve Bastion's resources.[1] A memory manifestation of her can be fought in the Path of Ascension.

History

Kalisthene devoted herself to overseeing and advising aspirants long ago. She witnessed the day when the steady stream of souls from Oribos simply stopped. At first, she thought it was merely a pause, after all, noble souls worthy of Bastion are not so common. But then days passed and the reality of the situation set in.[2] As the drought persisted, her peers were needed elsewhere until she was the only one left overseeing the aspirants. Her orders were to keep them training, to bide the time until the drought passed. She was not to tell them that every single soul was sent straight to the Maw, that the Shadowlands had broken down. She told them what she could, but she was alone and she was struggling to keep even herself calm.[3]

She kept going on like this until, for the first time in years, a new arrival came into the Vestibule of Eternity. This was no soul however but a living mortal hailing from Azeroth, a Maw Walker who had come to Bastion from Oribos trying to find out why there were kyrians among the Mawsworn. Kalisthene was summoned when she sensed the activation of Greeter Mnemis after Kleia, the aspirant who had been there when the Maw Walker arrived, told them to do so, thinking at first that they had been sent to Bastion to become a kyrian. Kalisthene inquired on why the centurion was reactivated, stating that they could ill afford the anima expenditure, and promptly shut it down. Kleia informed Kalisthene of the Maw Walker's mission and asked that they be allowed an audience with Kyrestia the Firstborne, the Archon of Bastion. Kalisthene told Kleia that the only way to earn an audience with the Archon was to walk the Path and prove worthy of ascension.[4]

Kalisthene was summoned a second time when the Maw Walker had successfully passed the rite of the First Cleansing in the Chamber of First Reflection, in the Aspirant's Crucible. They again asked to speak with the Archon but Kalisthene told them that they had already shared what the Maw Walker had told her with the Archon and that she had brought a token of gratitude from the Archon as thanks for their service, which the Maw Walker accepted. The answer however felt hollow to Kleia and Pelagos who were there with the Maw Walker.[5]

After the Forsworn attack on the Temple of Purity and their ordeal in the Mnemonic Locus, the trio went to Hero's Rest seeking out Kalisthene once again. This time she agreed to help them gain the audience they sought and directed the Maw Walker in how to summon Polemarch Adrestes who could present them to the Archon. She then left telling them that she had other duties to attend to.[6]

When the Maw Walker, with help from allies, vanquished the leaders of the Maldraxxi attack on the Temple of Courage, they reported their success to Kalisthene.[7]

She would later be present during the reception the Archon arranged for the Maw Walker, who decided to join the Kyrian Covenant, in honor of their efforts against the Maldraxxus incursion in Bastion.[8] During their time in the Kyrian Covenant Kalisthene would request that the Maw Walker go on missions around the Shadowlands alongside trainees, like aspirants Marylis and Deos and the steward Popo, so they could learn from watching and fighting alongside the Maw Walker.[9] She would also send the Maw Walker and others like them in various quests around Bastion which included: culling frenzied animals and evacuating caretakers in the Firstborne's Bounty,[10] demonstrating their skills infront of aspirants in the Aspirant's Crucible,[11] restoring order to Hero's Rest with the aid of stewards,[12] aiding Pelodis and Nemea,[13] restoring a Mnemis unit who had become unresponsive,[14] and fighting Forsworn in the Eternal Forge by utilizing the centurions located there.[15]

When the Path of Ascension was reinstated, the Maw Walker asked Kalisthene if they would allow them to use a  [Soul Mirror] on her and capture her memory, so her manifestation could be fought in the arena. Asking another kyrian to be your opponent in the Path is a great honor, as it tells them that you have much to learn from them and so Kalisthene gladly accepted.[1]

When the Maw Walker returned from Revendreth having acquired the  [Seal of Contrition], which was to be used in the making of a new Crest of Ascension, Kalisthene came to them and Adrestes with new intelligence about the Forsworn having become aware of what the Archon's faithful were doing.[16] Once the Crest of Ascension had been restored she was ordered to increase patrols due to elevated Forsworn activity.[17]

Kalisthene would become the new Polemarch of Bastion when Adrestes was named the Paragon of Devotion. Before Adrestes' empowerment ceremony, she opened up to the Maw Walker about her struggles during the anima drought and stated that there was no higher honor than for her hard work to have been first recognized by her inclusion in the Path of Ascension and then to have been named the new Polemarch. She thanked the Maw Walker for all their efforts and apologized that they had gotten off on the wrong foot.[18]

Gossip

At Aspirant's Awakening

I am Kalisthene. It is my call to ensure that all newly arrived souls find their way on the journey to becoming an aspirant.

At Elysian Hold:

Greetings, <name>. How may I be of service?

During N [60] The New Path

I devoted myself to overseeing and advising aspirants long, long ago. I was not the only one at first... but as the drought persisted, my peers were needed elsewhere until I was the only one left.

My orders were to keep the aspirants training, to bide our time until the drought passed. I was not to tell them that every single soul was sent straight to the Maw, that the Shadowlands had broken down. I told them what I could... but I was alone and had to keep myself calm.

For my hard work to be first recognized via my inclusion of the Path of Ascension, and now again as the new Polemarch of Bastion... I recognize no higher honor.

Thank you, Maw Walker. And I am sorry we got off on the wrong foot.
