An icon or racial crest is a heraldic representation of a faction. Crests featured heavily in the Argent Tournament, where every playable race at the time gained at least one in-game representation of their crest. The Archaeology tab shows what may be the racial crests of several non-playable races.
The word "icon" is also used to refer to pictures used by in-game UI elements such as item tooltips.
