Warcraft Wiki:WoW Icons

The game uses a few thousand different icons for spells and items. Each of them is stored within the game files and is accessible on certain websites. Almost every icon present in the game has been uploaded, organized and categorized here on the Warcraft Wiki. Icons are categorized mostly by their filename as they were up until during Battle for Azeroth. Afterwards most filenames are from the community and can change at anytime.

As the same icon may be used in multiple places, it is important that icons uploaded on Warcraft Wiki follow the naming convention kept in the game files; see the name normalization section for details.

Finding an Icon

There are currently two ways to go about finding an icon on Warcraft Wiki.

1. By Category

2. By Directory

  • View the Filename Directory below to browse with every category visible. (Very much out-of-date!)

Adding icons to Articles

Alas, not every item or ability has been matched up with its appropriate icon! We encourage editors to help match the article to its appropriate icon(s).

Using Wowhead is an excellent way to devise what icon an item, ability, etc. uses. However, sometimes Wowhead doesn't provide the filename and will instead provide a filedataid in its place. This is where a website like wago.tools comes into play as it can provide the filename just by searching the filedataid.

Users can browse the item image requests category to see some articles that are cold naked with no icon, and there are even more articles that have not been flagged that need our help.

I want to upload an icon I can't find!

Almost every icon in World of Warcraft has been uploaded and categorized here on Warcraft Wiki. However, should you discover one either in error or missing (please check and double-check that the icon you are attempting to upload does not already exist on Warcraft Wiki), please follow these steps:

First and foremost, if you'd rather have another user upload the icon with its information, just let Surafbrov know about what icon is missing and they'll get it done asap!

To upload an icon, first extract the interface icon from the game data:

DO NOT grab the icon from Wowhead as those icons are compressed and cropped. The icon should only come from the sources above.

If the extracted icon is a ".blp" file then we need to convert it to the PNG format. Simply renaming the file to the ".png" does not actually convert it and MediaWiki will complain that the format does not match. Use a program to convert the file to a PNG:

Once that is done, go to Special:Upload. Consult the name normalization section below to find an appropriate destination filename. Remember to verify its extension is .png, that its size is 64x64, and that it doesn't already exist. If you do upload an icon, please try to place it in the appropriate category, or if you prefer someone else to categorize it, simply put it in Category:WoW Icons.

Each icon also needs to use the {{Icon-source}} template. Be sure to fill out the appropriate information for each icon. Encrypted icons will need to be placed in the encrypted category by providing its TACT key. The content-hash is optional since Dragonflight but obtaining it would be appreciated!

If you do not wish to go through these troubles when creating a spell or item page, leave the icon parameter blank and another editor will eventually update it.

Name normalization

Note
Note: As of Battle for Azeroth, most of the filenames are now generated by the community instead of being provided by Blizzard.[1] Warcraft Wiki uses the filenames base on the wowdev listfile.

Filenames of icons hosted on Warcraft Wiki are based on the file names in the CASC files; however, several transformations are applied:

  • Lower case the file name: Wiki file names are case sensitive, while the game files are not; this avoids the need to look up "proper" capitalization of an icon file name.
  • Convert the ".blp" files to ".png": WoW icons should be uploaded only as a PNG images. While BLP icons can't be uploaded, generally the icons should not be uploaded under any other format other than PNG! This includes JPG and WEBP!
  • Replace any occurrences of multiple space characters with a single space character.

In some cases, file names in the game files may be obviously wrong (typoed, for example); you should still upload the icon to that exact filename. In cases where this does not collide with another icon name, you may create a redirect from the "intended" file name to the actual one.
