The Empire of Arathor, also known as the Arathorian Empire or Arathi Empire, was the first great human civilization, which existed in the northern Eastern Kingdoms between 2,800 and 1,200 years before the First War. Humanity—descendants of the vrykul race—had lived as scattered tribes of warring nomads for millennia before the Arathi tribe and their king, Thoradin, united them under a single banner in response to the threat posed by the forest trolls of the Amani Empire. During the Troll Wars, the high elves of Quel'Thalas allied with Arathor and introduced the humans to arcane magic, allowing the two races to thoroughly defeat the Amani.
Over the following centuries, the proliferation of magic allowed Arathor to expand across the Eastern Kingdoms through the founding of multiple city-states which over time grew increasingly autonomous. The empire ultimately collapsed into the seven human kingdoms of the modern day: Stromgarde, Dalaran, Gilneas, Alterac, Kul Tiras, Lordaeron, and Stormwind. These nations were not united again until the founding of the Alliance of Lordaeron over a millennium later. At some point before its collapse, a group of humans left Arathor and founded another successor state called the Arathi Empire on another continent beyond the Storming Sea.
