Windrunner Village is a village that lies in the shadow of the great Windrunner Spire to the south, in the Ghostlands. Both the village and the spire are named after the famous Windrunner family, who had protected it for many centuries.[1] It is now haunted by gargoyles and shades of the high elves killed by the Scourge during the Third War.
During the burning of Quel'Thalas, the village came under attack from the Old Horde and their Amani troll allies. They slaughtered most of the elves there, including civilians, Farstriders, members of House of Salonar, and even Lirath Windrunner who had been secretly training there. After the Horde retreated, Sylvanas Windrunner arrived and discovered the dead.[2]
During the Fall of Quel'Thalas, the Scourge passed through the area and the outskirts of the village was where Sylvanas clashed with the undead and Vor'athil died. Years later, when Quel'Thalas joined the Horde, the faction leaders went to visit Silvermoon City, while Sylvanas instead went through the Ghostlands and entered the village. She found gargoyles and remembered all the dead.[3]
In time, the village was overrun by a large force of Scourge shocktroopers. The blood elf adventurer was tasked by Arcanist Vandril to reduce the number of gargoyles and shades, and at the request of the Magisters from the Sanctum of the Sun, to recover their remains in order to study other ways to fight them. Following their success, the village was described as freed from the hold of the Scourge.[4]
