Ritual of Summoning is a warlock ritual used to summon party or raid members by creating a Summoning Portal. The spell requires two additional party or raid members to complete.
Ritual
The warlock begins by casting Ritual of Summoning, which opens a portal. Two present party or raid members then right-click on the portal and must not move until the ritual is complete.
Once the Summoning Portal is summoned, it will be available for 5 minutes and can be used to summon as many party or raid members as needed. The stone is capable of simultaneous portals. Each summon will require one additional party member.
Upon accepting a summons, the targeted player will be teleported to the location where the portal appeared.
Notes
- Summoning can be accepted while in flight, but not while in combat. If the summoned player drops out of combat during the two-minute time period, they can still accept the summon; the Accept button is merely grayed out until then. A player can also accept a summon after the meeting stone vanishes, provided the initial summon was cast within the last 2 minutes of the summoning portal being active.
- Any player can target themselves as the summoning target in order to quickly hearth, repair, and return to the spot where the ritual was performed. This works inside of an instance as long as the warlock meets the requirements for the instance.
- You cannot use Ritual of Summoning to summon a goblin, worgen, pandaren, death knight or demon hunter character who hasn't completed their starting area quests.
- Ritual of Summoning cannot be used in battlegrounds.
- Frequently called "warlock closet" by players due to its model.
Trivia
- Ritual of Summoning is a rare Warlock ability card in the World of Warcraft: Trading Card Game's Blood of Gladiators series.
- The Summoning Portal created by the Ritual of Summoning appears as a common card for the Warlock class in Hearthstone. The Portal reduces the mana cost of friendly minions, but can not reduce them below a cost of 1 mana crystal. The flavor text reads: "NOT LESS THAN 1! Don't get any ideas!"
- Ritual of Summoning was mostly eclipsed in Cataclysm with the introduction of the guild perk [Have Group, Will Travel], which allowed players to easily and instantly summon all party members to their location once every 2 hours. The perk was removed in Mists of Pandaria.
