A pickup group, or pug, is a group of random players that are grouped together via the Dungeon Finder, the Premade Group Finder, or other methods in an impromptu manner. Note that the word "group" refers to the literal meaning of a group, i.e. players having a common objective, and is not limited to five persons (a party). Raids with pick-up players are still called a pug, despite being a raid.

Pickup groups are usually less organized than a group formed from people of the same guild because the players are less familiar with each other. Many guilds are hesitant to use pug players for instances due to the chance that one or more of the players will wipe the group or be toxic, and as such it's important to be nice to both the group leader and fellow players as agreed to in the game's social contract.

Many pugs are very successful due to (or possibly in spite of) the fact that many PUG leaders will ask for credentials before inviting a player - this can look like whispering them an obtained Ahead of the Curve achievement, the player's current Mythic+ rating, or other details like the player's item level.

The most important elements of a successful pug are a positive attitude, cooperation, clarity of communication (including target markers and pings), and experience that the leader has.

Improving the PUG experience in dungeons

  • When unsure about something, like the intended strategy for a boss encounter, be sure to voice the concern to make sure everyone is on the same page.
  • Share knowledge. Answer questions without being condescending. It's possible to make a new friend and teach someone how to be a better player this way.
  • Being aware of class functionality, abilities, and expected role in the group, and limitations as a player.
  • Don't be afraid to participate in assisting with crowd control and interrupts when needed.
  • Come prepared.
    • Repair equipment before beginning an instance, and consider grabbing some  [Auto-Hammer] items for those less prepared.
    • Bring consumables - at least some potions and a food that provides a [Well Fed] buff.
    • As a healer, have enough water to regenerate mana as needed.
  • Briefly watch a guide or an explanatory video discussing the basic strategies and routes through the desired instance.
  • Be tolerant of different approaches. Most instances can be handled by groups that are slow and methodical or by groups that are chaotic. Nothing sours a group more than people complaining about the approach. Players should voice their preference, but that does not ensure compliance.

Use out of combat skills

Using abilities and professions outside of combat can lead to a more pleasant experience.
