- — Maxwell to his former comrades, as he left to join the Argent Dawn with Pureheart[2]
Lord Maxwell Tyrosus, nicknamed Max by Argus Highbeacon,[3] is a human paladin and was once the leader of the Argent Dawn after the death of Lord Raymond George. He is currently the representative leader of the Argent Crusade since the death of Highlord Tirion Fordring during the Battle for Broken Shore. During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, he pledged the allegiance of the Argent Crusade to the reformed Order of the Silver Hand, and became the Hand of its new Highlord. As a member of the order's war council,[4] he participated in the meetings for important decisions, and notably fought during the Battle for the Exodar and the battle against Balnazzar in the Netherlight Temple.
Biography
The Ashbringer
Soon after the Third War, Lord Maxwell Tyrosus joined Alexandros Mograine's crusade against the undead and insisted on working with other races. He later accompanied his lord and comrades, Brigitte Abbendis and Fairbanks, to the Monastery where they found the troll Zabra Hexx. While Brigitte insisted on killing him, he stopped her to speak with the troll.
Following Alexandros' demise, the Order of the Silver Hand became more zealous and fanatic and eventually reformed itself into the Scarlet Crusade. He thus left the organization with Pureheart and joined the Argent Dawn, eventually succeeding Lord Raymond George as its leader in the Plaguelands and one of the highest-ranking officers in the organization as a whole. He later found Darion Mograine and let him join the order, bringing him to the Chillwind Point where they learned that Alexandros' spirit may be alive. He wished to help Darion to attack Naxxramas, but Darion insisted that Maxwell was very important to the Dawn, and instead, found volunteers at Chillwind Point.[2]
In time, Maxwell and the rest of the Argent Dawn forces moved to the Light's Hope Chapel where the Scourge was about to attack. After he visited Tirion Fordring, Darion returned to the Chapel where Maxwell revealed to him the catacombs beneath the holy place. When the Scourge attacked, he alongside other Argent Dawn members defended the place and witnessed the sacrifice of Darion. He then remained in contact with Tirion.[5]

Compendium of Fallen Heroes
During the Siege of the Sanguine, a major battle between the Scourge and the Argent Dawn at Light's Hope Chapel, Lord Maxwell Tyrosus dealt a critical blow to Kirkessen the Zealous, a powerful lich who reported directly to the Lich King himself. Since its defeat, the lich is now no longer able to assume a corporeal form.[6]
World of Warcraft
Years later, Lord Maxwell Tyrosus resided in Light's Hope Chapel and rarely saw visitors from outside his organization, as it had been years since he had granted an audience to outsiders.[7] From there he coordinated the troops of the Argent Dawn to fight the Scourge in the Eastern Plaguelands and was planning with Duke Nicholas Zverenhoff an offensive on Stratholme to eliminate Baron Rivendare.
He also received a husk from a silithid by an adventurer sent by Colossus Researcher Sophia, which he thought to be useful in the war against the Scourge.[8]
Wrath of the Lich King
During the Battle for Light's Hope Chapel, Maxwell led the troops of the Argent Dawn against the Death Knights of Acherus, alongside Duke Nicholas Zverenhoff and Korfax, Champion of the Light. When Highlord Tirion Fordring joined the battle, Maxwell sided with him to defeat Highlord Darion Mograine and his death knights. He then witnessed the defeat of the Lich King against the Ashbringer, and the merger of the Argent Dawn with the remains of the Order of the Silver Hand into the Argent Crusade, which he joined under the command of Tirion Fordring.[9]
Cataclysm
Following the war against the Lich King, Maxwell continued with the admission of new members in the Argent Crusade, while reducing the Scourge numbers in the region through some imposed trials.[10] The first test he gave was to enter the small crypt behind the chapel, where are buried the bodies of fallen heroes who gave their lives during the Scourgewar, then to read the [Argent Scroll] in order to summon and fight the spirit of Maxwell's predecessor, Lord Raymond George.[11] The second test was to reduce the number of undead and cultists present in the Noxious Glade, because despite their proximity to the chapel the Crusade could not completely remove them.[12] Finally, the last test was once again to reduce the number of undead in the region, but this time in Northdale.[13]
Legion
Following the loss of Highlord Tirion Fordring during the Battle for Broken Shore, Maxwell journeyed to Dalaran and came into contact with the Champion of the Light. He informed them that the Burning Legion had devastated the forces of the Argent Crusade, and that it was necessary to reunite those who still have the conviction to save their home.[14]
He then explained the existence of holy artifacts that would give them a chance to stop the third invasion of the Burning Legion and accompanied them in search of the Ashbringer, lost when Tirion was defeated.[15] Unable to find the legendary weapon, Maxwell traveled to Uther's Tomb in the Western Plaguelands to find answers from the ghost of the deceased paladin. After they exorcised the spirits and purified the graves of the deceased, disturbed by the "death" of the Highlord,[16][17] they finally communicated with Uther who revealed that Tirion yet lived.[18]
At Light's Hope Chapel, he rallied his forces to launch an attack on the Broken Shore,[19] and led them against the demon army that awaited them under the orders of Jailer Zerus. He eventually found Tirion, with whom he remained in his last moments, as the artifact was recovered by the champion who repelled Balnazzar. Once Tirion died, Maxwell ordered that his body be transported to be amongst the ancient heroes of the Light buried beneath Light's Hope Chapel.[20] He also asked the paladin champion to clear the area where Tirion fell so the Argent Crusade could sanctify it.
Inside the Sanctum of Light, where all of Azeroth's paladin orders have gathered, Tyrosus announced the Champion of the Light as the heir of Highlord Fordring and the new leader of the reborn Order of the Silver Hand, to which the Argent Crusade he represented swore loyalty.[21] After the ceremony, he announced to the Highlord that as long they wield the Ashbringer, the Legion would do everything in their power to strike them down, and so he humbly submitted himself to act as the eyes and the blade of the Highlord until his dying breath, now as a champion of the Silver Hand.[1]
When the Knights of the Ebon Blade invaded the chapel, in order to raise Tirion Fordring as a death knight to be a part of the Four Horsemen, Maxwell was subdued by Darion Mograine as he tried to protect the entrance to the sanctum.[22]
During one of his expeditions to the Broken Shore, Maxwell saw an extraordinarily luminescent object emerge from the Felstorm that fell down towards the coast of Suramar, cutting a swath through the tempest itself.[23] The object was none other than the [Light's Heart], bearer of High Exarch Turalyon's message to save Azeroth by bringing the heart of the naaru Xe'ra to the Prophet Velen. Maxwell was later present at the meeting requested by Lord Grayson Shadowbreaker, where he asked the Highlord what will be the next actions of the Order following Turalyon's warning.[24][25]
Maxwell later participated in the Battle for the Exodar, fighting against High General Rakeesh alongside the Highlord and Lady Liadrin to protect the draenei people and the naaru O'ros, with the latter being targeted by the Legion so that they could not unlock the knowledge contained within Light's Heart.[26]
Later he was present during the battle at the Netherlight Temple with the troops of the Silver Hand who came to support the priests of the Conclave. He fought against the hordes of demons summoned by Balnazzar, until Lothraxion and the Army of the Light came and helped them to eliminate the dreadlord for good.[27]

Do you feel it as well, Highlord? Something isn't right.
I've recovered a dark, but powerful crystal, Maxwell. If we can harness its power it might prove useful against the Legion.
I see.
I trust your wisdom, Highlord, but I can't say that this sits well with me.
How can we ever be sure that the power within that thing won't... change you?
There cannot be Light without Shadow. We must strike a balance.
You're right, but how can we ever hope to tap into that safely? Our power will only...

In the RPG
He is older than most Argent Dawn knights, at only a little over 40 years old,[28] but is still in peak physical condition.[29] He's starting to show his age, though he's still a valiant fighter.[28] Some say that Lord Maxwell Tyrosus, once a mighty knight, founded it in disgust after Arthas's betrayal, becoming its nominal head.[30] He is classified as a paladin and a warrior.[29]
Notes and trivia
- Maxwell Tyrosus and Uther the Lightbringer were old friends.[31]
- Despite Ashbringer implying he was the original leader of the Argent Dawn when it was created, stating that he was "the leader of the new order", Lord Raymond George is stated to have been the original leader.
- It is just possible that Raymond died soon after the Argent Dawn was formed. Given that the Argent Dawn did not exist for very long prior to its Classic depiction, during which time Tyrosus had taken charge, Raymond must have died very early onto the organization's inception; perhaps early enough that the Dawn would still be considered a 'new order'.
- He wears White Tiger Plate and wields a [Greatsword of the Silver Hand] during his appearance in Legion.
- Tyrosus was voiced by an unknown actor in Wrath of the Lich King, and is voiced by Josh Petersdorf in Legion.[32]
- He has an invisible Follower recruiting spell with the following description: Follower: Maxwell Tyrosus — "Lord Maxwell Tyrosus was one of the first to join the Argent Dawn, and quickly rose through the ranks to great prominence, second only to Tirion Fordring himself. Whether he was fighting against the scourge of Naxxramas or the very lord of the Scourge, Tyrosus has always remained a steadfast leader and a true champion of the Light."
- Humorously, while holding his telescope during his time at the Broken Shore, he will be holding it up to the eye with the patch covering it.
