Gear sources

There are seven gear upgrade tracks in Season 4:

Upgrade tracks
Track Source Base iLvl Upgrade
max iLvl
Difficulty Mythic+ Vault
Explorer Open world/Normal dungeons 454–463 476
Adventurer Heroic dungeons 467–476 489
Veteran Raid Finder Mythic n/a 480–489 502
Champion Normal 2–5 n/a 493–502 515
Hero Heroic 6+ 2–7 506–515 522
Myth Mythic n/a 8+ 519–528 528
Awakened Awakened n/a n/a 493 535

Veteran-track gear also comes from open-world content (like Siege on Dragonbane Keep, Fyrakk Assaults, and Superbloom) and weekly wrapper quests (like N [70W] A Worthy Ally: Loamm Niffen and N [70] Fighting is Its Own Reward). The Aurostor world boss will drop gear on the Champion track. The end-of-run chest in Mythic+ will drop gear at the specified track. Completing Heroic/Mythic/Mythic+ keys will also add loot to the weekly Great Vault. Complete enough keys of the specified level to be able to select loot on that upgrade track.

Awakened gear is purchased using 2x  [Antique Bronze Bullion] and starts at ilvl 493 and upgrades to ilvl 528, with the "Very rare" purchases going all the way up to 535.

Item levels and upgrade costs

Upgradeable gear will only ever be created in the rank 1–4 band of an upgrade track. So, an item level 476 piece that drops will always be Adventurer 4/8, never Explorer 8/8.

Flightstones have no weekly cap, so they can be ground out indefinitely up to the overall holding cap.

To upgrade to the listed item level from one row above, the Flightstone and Crest cost in the higher item level row must be paid. For example, to upgrade from Champion 1 (454) to Champion 2 (457), the cost is 145 Flightstones and 15x [Drake's Dreaming Crest]. Upgrades are cumulative, so to upgrade from Champion 1 to Champion 8 would cost 1,115 Flightstones, 45x [Drake's Dreaming Crest], and 60x [Wyrm's Dreaming Crest].

Should players attempt to upgrade a lower item level piece in a slot that they already have a higher item level in, no Crests will be required. For example, players who have looted or upgraded to an item level 463 helm will see helms of all lower item levels cost no crests and 50% of the Flightstones. The Flightstone discount (but not the Crest discount) is account-wide. For rings, trinkets, and one-handed weapons, since two of each can be equipped, the lower item level piece determines the discount limit.

Crests

Players can acquire 120 crests of each type per week in Season 4, which is enough to afford eight upgrades of each crest type per week (was 6 upgrades worth in Season 3). If players have hit their weekly cap of the specified crest type, the game will award crests of the next lower crest type. The holding cap increases by 120 each week.

Crest sources are not chance-based. That is — if players complete a task they will receive the crests deterministically.

Enchanters can use crests to craft an Enchanted Dreaming Crest, which is used to set the item level range of crafted gear. Said crafted gear will then be upgraded using Recrafting, not Flightstones.

Once a player has purchased or equipped all possible upgrades with a type of crest, they can visit Vaskarn in Valdrakken to exchange those crests for higher level crests. That upgrade is tied to achievements, requiring a specified item level in each slot:

Dreaming Crests

In Dragonflight Season 3, crest and crest fragment items were removed, and crests were converted to currencies to save some inventory space. The same four classifications were used as in season 2, and the crest currency dropped at the same rate as crest fragments did.

  • [Whelpling's Dreaming Crest] (ilvl 441–450)
    • Acquired from the open world, small treasures, (non-elite) rares
    • Amirdrassil raid finder (10 per boss, wing bosses drop 15)
    • Mythic+ 2–5 (5 for completing a key, 12 if on time)
    • Rated PvP: Combatant 1
  • [Drake's Dreaming Crest] (ilvl 454–463)
    • Open world rare elites, weekly quests, Fyrakk Assaults, Paragon bags
    • Amirdrassil normal (10 per boss, wing bosses drop 15)
    • Mythic+ 6–10 (5 for completing a key, 12 if on time)
    • Rated PvP: Combatant 2, Challenger 1–2
  • [Wyrm's Dreaming Crest] (ilvl 467–476)
    • Amirdrassil heroic (10 per boss, wing bosses drop 15)
    • Mythic+ 11–15 (5 for completing a key, 12 if on time)
    • Rated PvP: Rival 1–2
  • [Aspect's Dreaming Crest] (ilvl 480–489)
    • Amirdrassil mythic (10 per boss, wing bosses drop 15)
    • Mythic+ 16+ (5 for completing a key, 12 if on time)
    • Rated PvP: Duelist, Elite

Shadowflame Crests

In Dragonflight Season 2, Shadowflame crests (and crest fragments) were items, not currency, and dropped from the following sources:

  •  [Whelpling's Shadowflame Crest] (ilvl 402–411)
    • Acquired from the open world, small treasures, (non–elite) rares
    • Aberrus raid finder (10 per boss, wing bosses drop 15)
    • Mythic+ 2–5 (5 fragments for completing a key, 12 if on time)
  •  [Drake's Shadowflame Crest] (ilvl 415–424)
    • Open world rare elites, weekly quests, Fyrakk Assaults, Paragon bags
    • Aberrus normal (10 per boss, wing bosses drop 15)
    • Mythic+ 6–10 (5 fragments for completing a key, 12 if on time)
  •  [Wyrm's Shadowflame Crest] (ilvl 428–437)
    • Aberrus heroic (10 per boss, wing bosses drop 15)
    • Mythic+ 11–15 (5 fragments for completing a key, 12 if on time)
  •  [Aspect's Shadowflame Crest] (ilvl 441–447)

Patch changes

  • Dragonflight Patch 10.2.0 (2023-11-07):
    • PvP gear can now have its PVE item level upgraded with flightstones and crests (was Honor). The PvP item level will remain unchanged.
      • All PvP activities will reward flightstones, and crests can be earned from rated activities.
    • Players can earn 90 crests of each type per week, which is enough to afford 6 upgrades of each crest type per week (was 10 upgrades).
    • Flightstones earned in Dragonflight Season 2 will be converted to gold.
    • Shadowflame Crests and Crest Fragments will become grey items.
  • Dragonflight Patch 10.1.5 (2023-07-11):
    • Gear created at item level 441 or 444 can now be upgraded using the new Myth upgrade track instead of being above the upgrade system entirely.
      • The Myth track is a new track that goes from 441 (Myth 1/3) to 444 (Myth 2/3) to 447 (Myth 3/3). Gear cannot be upgraded above Myth 3/3.
      • This change is retroactive for all gear obtained in Season 2. Any Season 2 gear that was created at item level 441, 444, or 447 will now display its upgrade level along the Myth track and can be upgraded at any item upgrade vendor.
      • Upgrading gear along the Myth track requires Flightstones and an Aspect's Shadowflame Crest for each upgrade. The usual discount rules apply here (if the character has a higher level piece of gear in the same slot, no crest is needed; if any character on the account has a higher level piece of gear in the same slot the Flightstone cost will be halved).
  • Dragonflight Patch 10.1.0 (2023-05-02): Added.
