The Temple of the Red Crane.

The Temple of the Red Crane (or the Crane Temple)[1] is the home of the August Celestial Chi-Ji, the celestial embodiment of hope, and the Crane Wing order located in south-central Krasarang Wilds. From within the temple's ornate halls, the Red Crane wings out to oppose the despair that spread through the murky Krasarang Wilds like a cancer. It is described as a towering complex of ornate stonework with a crimson-tiled roof of which glimpses can be caught from far away.[2]

Once infested with the minions of the Sha of Despair, it was later cleansed by Prince Anduin Wrynn and heroic adventurers. With the arrival of the Horde occupation forces, it was then fortified, and the remaining members of the order were taken prisoner. King Varian Wrynn successfully led the Alliance forces to expel the Horde.

With the temple cleansed and its order freed from the Horde, the atmosphere of the temple now is one of great industry and energy.[2]

During the invasion of the sha, which had infested the area from the temple's basement, many of the Crane Wing order were driven from the temple. Those who escaped established the Crane Wing Refuge north across the river, a temporary camp where they gathered their strength and did their best to keep hope alive. They sought allies among the many adventurers in order to cleanse the temple.[3]

The temple was later cleansed by Prince Anduin Wrynn and heroic adventurers from the Sha. However, with the recent arrival of the Horde occupation forces, the sacred site has been fortified, and the remaining members of the order are being held prisoner. In the A Little Patience Scenario, King Varian Wrynn successfully leads the Alliance forces to expel the Horde from the temple.

Following the awakening of the Dragon Isles, Chen Stormstout, Li Li Stormstout, and Catelyn the Blade visited the temple after picking the latter up from Anglers Wharf, where her boat was under repairs, when the monks of the Crane Wing order promptly invited them in for a simple dinner of rice, fish and vegetables.

Catelyn was surprised to find a temple so filled with obvious joy. As Chi-Ji is the embodiment of hope, it was his power that stood against the Sha of Despair until it was defeated. One of the monks, Kuo-Na Quillpaw, explained that joy and levity are not the same as hope, but they are part of both cause and effect, the product of grasping for light in the darkness and an act of defiance in the face of despair.[2]

Kuo-Na then shared with the three the story of what had transpired there in the past, and that it is in memory of that grim and difficult time that they strive to live even more fully now.[3]
