Avalon was the codename of a canceled Warcraft game. It has been described as "Minecraft in the Warcraft universe."[1]

History

Similar to how World of Warcraft was a streamlined version of EverQuest, it was intended that Avalon be a streamlined version of Minecraft. Jay Wilson worked on the game after leaving Team 3, and Mike Booth was also involved. The game would feature a storyline and quests; for instance, going to an island to fight a dragon and steal its treasure. The gameplay was similar to Minecraft in that it involved building blocks and the like.[2]

Work began on Avalon in 2013, and the project was canceled in 2015.[2] In August of that year, Booth stated that he had left Blizzard in June after working on a previously unannounced project.[3] Blizzard Entertainment employees interviewed by Jason Schreier have stated that Avalon was "incredibly fun to play." Based on their feedback, Schreier has stated that while Minecraft was the template, Avalon had more in common with Dragon Quest Builders.[2]

Trivia

Avalon shares some similarities with Odyssey—both are canceled Blizzard survival games. Furthermore, the term "Avalon" comes from Arthurian mythology, while Odyssey took inspiration from English folklore and literature.
