Clockwork
- For the mechagnome character, see Clockwerk. For the Gnomeregan area, see Clockwerk Run.
Clockworks, also known as clockwerks,[1][2] are a type of robot created from gears, steam, and other mechanical devices. The first known clockworks on Azeroth were the mechagnomes, a race of titan-forged creatures created by Keeper Mimiron as his servants and caretakers much like the earthen.[3] Others were later created in gigantic[4] or lessen[5] proportions to protect the titanic complex of Ulduar in Northrend. Nowadays, clockworks are mainly designed and produced by gnome and goblin engineers for various functions and services.[6][7]
Types of clockwork
- Clockwork robot
- Clockwork giant
- Clockwork goblin
- Clockwork mechagnomes
- Clockwork penguin[8]
- Clockwork toys
In the RPG
The clockworks of Azeroth are the creations of an inspired, possibly demented, and likely now-deceased gnome tinker. The gnome designed and built himself mechanical allies and the first brain gear to control them. Now, they are rare, but their numbers may be increasing - if they are clever enough to gather parts and reproduce through construction. Clockworks encountered on Kalimdor are possibly a scouting force from another section of the world.[9]
Other races have also created their own clockwork automatons; although these other designs generally lack sentience and the sophisticated ability to reproduce on their own. Makil, the goblin tinker wanted to make little tiny clockworks that could sneak around at night.[10] The goblin Ziggler notably made a clockwork dwarf.[11]
Gadgets, clockwork, and gears — among other things — are what drive a tinker to innovate and create. These inventive dabblers in the technological arts create wonders useful to all adventurers seeking to make their way in the world.[12] Signs of a workshop include; sturdy clockwork devices assisting the locals in their labors, stockpiles of mechanical parts, and phlogiston collectors.[13]
