Mehlar Dawnblade is a blood elf paladin who was a pupil of Uther the Lightbringer and a member of the Order of the Silver Hand prior to the Third War. Following the Scourge invasion of Quel'Thalas by Arthas Menethil, he joined the ranks of the Blood Knights under Lady Liadrin. He is known for following a strict code of conduct and his strong moral rectitude.

Initially, he was located at the Bulwark on the border between Tirisfal Glades and the Western Plaguelands. His counterpart is the draenei Anchorite Truuen at Chillwind Camp.

History

Mehlar was once a paladin pupil of the legendary Uther the Lightbringer, the leader of the Order of the Silver Hand,[1] being a member when Uther was also training Prince Arthas.[2] During the Third War, Mehlar became a veteran of many battles against the Scourge.[1]

In the years following the Scourge invasion of Quel'Thalas, Mehlar became a member of the Blood Knight Order and was known for following a strict code of conduct and his strong moral rectitude. He worked well in tandem with other knights, and was a good exemplar of the unity Lady Liadrin sought to instill in them. He accompanied Liadrin and the team during their mission to retake Sunsail Anchorage in Eversong Woods from the wretched. During the struggle, he aided Vranesh, fighting on a merchant ship.

Later, Mehlar and the other knights conducted a mission against Dar'Khan Drathir and went to watch Dawnstar Spire in the Ghostlands for any suspicious activity. He was grouped with Vranesh and Galell for the task. They were stationed in the forest outside the spire, but no activity occurred inside. He did notice Galell, however, and how he had been wandering off, and he reported this to Liadrin. The Lady scolded them that being part of a team meant not letting him out of sight. At that moment, they heard a scream, so the knights rushed to investigate. They found Galell, unhinged, next to a massacred troll body. Mehlar was shocked by the brutal scene. Liadrin told him to stay at the site as she returned to Silvermoon and sent others to relieve them.

Afterward, he was grouped with Cyssa and Bloodvalor and continued to hold vigil over the Spire. This, however, turned out to be a trap for the knights as Dar'Khan ambushed them and tried to kill and raise them in the service of the Lich King. The timely arrival of Lor'themar and the Farstriders saved the knights. They healed themselves and the injured Lor'themar, who killed Dar'Khan.[1]

Following the Third War, Mehlar harbored deep hatred toward his former mentor, the late Uther the Lightbringer, for teaching Arthas Menethil in the way of the paladin. He believed that Uther's "mishandling" of the young prince's training was responsible for Arthas' betrayal and the subsequent destruction of Quel'Thalas. He tasked Horde agents with defiling the late Uther's tomb, which compelled the Lightbringer's spirit to confront the adventurers.[2] The spirit expressed sorrow that Mehlar's heart had turned so dark, and hoped that his former pupil would see the Light again and turn his efforts to restoring Quel'Thalas. Although he was furious that his former master forgave him, Mehlar seemingly realized that his actions might have been both too harsh and too hasty, and needed some time alone to think about it.[3]

He also requested Blood Knight adventurers to meet him[4] and successfully worked with them and Sylvanas Windrunner[5] to create the Scourgebane.[6]

During the war in Draenor, Mehlar was seen in Exarch's Refuge in Talador with Lady Liadrin and her Sunsworn healing wounded draenei and blood elves. He sent Horde adventurers to Tomb of Lights to aid Soulbinder Tuulani and her Auchenai soulpriests who were maintaining Auchindoun's defenses.[7] Mehlar then accompanied her Lady to Sunsworn Camp where he learned of the Shadow Council's intention to corrupt deathweb spiders and use their potent poison. To prevent this, Mehlar directed Horde adventurers to destroy defiling crystals in Deathweb Hollow.[8]

At the beginning of the third invasion of the Burning Legion, Mehlar returned to Uther's Tomb, this time to defend it from the spirits turned hostile by a disturbance in the Light following Tirion Fordring's apparent death. He then watched over the tomb alongside High Priest Thel'danis.[9]

Mehlar later traveled to the Sanctum of Light beneath Light's Hope Chapel, where he and the rest of the Blood Knights pledged their support to the reborn Knights of the Silver Hand and its new Highlord.[10]

A few years later, Mehlar traveled to Tyr's Rest after the titan watcher's reforging and questioned Lady Liadrin as to its portents. He reflected on his recovering homeland of Quel'Thalas, the misplaced rage he'd once harbored for Uther, and his former mentor's teachings in light of Tyr's return, certain the Lightbringer would have been proud to behold the Tyr's Guard and confident that an era of healing lay ahead for Azeroth.

I WILL have my revenge!

Tyr's Rest

Before even the blood knights came to be, Uther trained me as a paladin, <name>.

But when Uther could not stop Arthas... my people paid the price.

My bitterness festered for years. I know Uther has forgiven me, though I did not deserve it.

Now, seeing Tyr here, I remember the lessons and legends Uther imparted to me that had been passed down over the ages. They are so real yet again.

Quel'Thalas is healing. Tyr has returned to the world. And a new order that Uther himself would be proud of has risen.

Our world must be righting itself once more. I wish Uther were here to see it.

Dialogue

On approach at Tyr's Rest, Thaldraszus
Mehlar Dawnblade says: Lady Liadrin, I take it you spoke with Tyr... How do you think his restoration will affect Azeroth?
Lady Liadrin says: If Talthis's devotion is any indication, I believe Keeper Tyr's return bodes well for our world.
Lady Liadrin says: I know not Tyr's intent, but I am optimistic that he may be a light guiding through any darkness that comes next.
