Scourgestone

A scourgestone is an item given to all Scourge upon birth or creation. It provides certain benefits to the holder, but more importantly it allows Scourge leaders visibility into the location and movement of all of their units.[1] One known use of scourgestones is to allow some Scourge commanders to pilot necropoli.[2] Scourgestones are weak when separated from their holder, and can easily be crushed into fragments.[3] It is possible to purge a scourgestone and to turn it inert but this attracts the attention of undead for countless miles.[4] With a rare magic that is able to turn the evil of something against itself, it is then possible to purify the inert stone into a Holy Mightstone.[5]

During Death Rising, minions of the Scourge were discovered to be carrying a new, darker type of scourgestone, touched not by the Lich King but by the even more sinister power of the Maw.[6][7][8]

Types

Pre-Cataclysm

WoW Icon update.png The subject of this section has been removed from World of Warcraft but is present in Classic Era.

Prior to the Cataclysm, players would collect scourgestones for the Argent Dawn. By wearing an Argent Dawn Commission (a trinket which came in various versions), players could cause undead in the Plaguelands and their dungeons to drop scourgestones. These could be turned in for equipment, reputation, and other rewards. With the Cataclysm, this system was obsoleted and new players will not encounter any trace of it. However, players who earned Argent Dawn Commission trinkets prior to the Cataclysm can still request replacements, and can in fact continue to collect scourgestones; however, the scourgestones are now entirely useless.

The scourgestones were turned in to Nicholas Zverenhoff at Light's Hope Chapel, Argent Officer Garush at The Bulwark, or Argent Officer Pureheart at Chillwind Camp.

The trinkets noted below cannot be obtained by new players, as the quests to acquire them are no longer in the game. Players who earned them previously can still request replacements for the  [Argent Dawn Commission],  [Seal of the Dawn], and  [Rune of the Dawn]. Wearing these trinkets will still cause undead mobs to drop scourgestones, but the scourgestones serve no purpose.

Collection

Undead creatures sent out by the Lich King and his forces will have a chance to carry upon them three different levels of Scourgestones. One may obtain these stones by equipping one of the following trinkets (none of which can be acquired by new players anymore):

Undead mobs, along with their living compatriots of the Cult of the Damned in Western Plaguelands, Eastern Plaguelands, Scholomance and Stratholme have the chance to carry one of these stones.

Boss type mobs such as Ras Frostwhisper, Darkmaster Gandling, and Baron Rivendare will always carry a Corruptor's Scourgestone.

Obsolete types of Scourgestones

As stated, these items can still be collected. However, they can no longer be turned in for any rewards.

In the RPG

The process of turning scourgestones into holy mightstones is favored by the Argent Dawn.[citation needed]  Young members of the Dawn collect scourgestones to show their mettle.[9]
