Hatuun, before he became broken.

Chieftain Hatuun is the leader of the Krokul of Argus. Hatuun knows Velen from before the Burning Legion corrupted the eredar, and resents him and the draenei who fled Argus.[1]

History

One of the Council to the Triumvirate, Hatuun was among the eredar who gathered in Eredath when Kil'jaeden told them about Sargeras. He watched Kil'jaeden impassively.[2] When the draenei fled Argus, Hatuun stayed behind despite Velen's protest to face the traitor Talgath so Velen could escape. He asked Velen to protect his family.[3]

Hatuun would eventually become one of the Krokul. Thousands of years after the Genedar's escape, he had become bitter about the Prophet leaving him and others behind, even though he made the choice to stay on his own. When the Xenedar, the ship of the Army of the Light, crashed on Krokuun, Hatuun and his people saved Turalyon and brought him to the Krokul Hovel.[1] When the forces of Azeroth arrived on Argus to fight the Burning Legion, Hatuun begged them to aid his people.[4] When Velen returned to Argus and investigated the Krokul Hovel, Hatuun revealed himself to Velen and told him how he was bitter after thousands of years, but the adventurer who had saved them from the Legion's grasp may show that Velen had changed.[1]

The adventurer and Turalyon met with Hatuun and told them that his scouts found the remains of Aggonar. He revealed a secret passage to the High Exarch and the hero. The chieftain mentioned to Turalyon that his people hid, adapted; in their hour of need, the land still listened to their pleas.[5] Soon after securing a staging ground in the Antoran Wastes, the Speaker of Azeroth Magni steadied the chieftain's people's hearts.[6] Hatuun told the hero that the "one in diamonds" is distressed, then not soon after addressed that something changed with the stone in the cave at Krokul Hovel.[7][8] In the aftermath of taking out the Soul of Argus and before the Vindicaar returned to Azeroth, Velen gave Hatuun and his people the choice rejoin the draenei, but they chose to remain on Argus.[9]

Hatuun introducing Arzal'kal to Velen.

In time, Hatuun and his people found an unexpected ally in the man'ari eredar Arzal'kal, who desiring penitence for his dark deeds in service to the Legion and to speak with Velen, personally fought off several Legion ambushes by their side to win their trust. Thus, Hatuun called upon Velen to return to Argus and arranged a meeting, which started off on a sour note when Velen immediately shackled Arzal'kal in holy shackles and accused Hatuun of allying with the Legion. As Hatuun worked himself into a fury over the accusations, Arzal'kal pleaded for Velen to hear him out and declared that he wasn't there to fight. After a moment of contemplation, Velen agreed and learned of Arzal'kal's history, of his vow to no longer be guided by his own cowardice, to which Velen allowed him a chance to prove his words. Thus while Velen and Hatuun remained behind to converse, adventurers were sent to help Arzal'kal obtain his proof.[10][11]

After the pair returned with the  [Brilliant Star], one of the shards of the Ata'mal crystal, Hatuun witnessed Velen welcome Arzal'kal (who reclaimed his birth name of Arzaal) and his like-minded man'ari into draenei society. As the Prophet and Arzaal departed together, Velen called upon Hatuun to think on his offer. For his part, Hatuun was surprised that Velen had decided to accept the man'ari into the fold and reflected that things were different now and that he could allow himself to hope. Before adventurers departed, he called upon to visit with Gaal to view things of value they had to trade for the proper resources.[12]

Later, Velen invited Hatuun and the krokul to the Exodar on Azeroth to celebrate the Tishamaat holiday. Hatuun did not initially go himself even though some krokul chose to, but a few days later Velen asked him to come and help deal with the satyrs on Bloodmyst Isle.[13] After the satyrs and their leader Sironas were dealt with, Hatuun attended the Tishamat. He was uncomfortable with learning that other Krokul had existed on Draenor, as well as unsurprised with how Velen and the unbroken draenei had treated them. Velen approached Hatuun with an offer for them to reconcile and work together for their people again, and Hatuun admitted that he would think about it.[14]

Notes

  • The scene where Talgath arrived to confront Velen in Rise of the Horde doesn't describe Hatuun at all, so the dialogue they had in the quest's cutscene is a new addition.
  • Hatuun states that Velen had left him behind and that this is the cause of his bitterness towards him, even though doing so was his own choice, and Velen asked him not to. It may be that thousand years of surviving on the fel-saturated Argus had twisted some of his memories, as well as his body as the negative effects of fel on those exposed to it, mentally and physically, have been witnessed before.
    • Alternately as the years passed he began harboring resentment towards Velen due to the Prophet not returning to save him and his forces.
  • Hatuun's weapon is a recolored version of  [Jaina's Staff].
  • During A [50-70] Excision, his generic name is Krokul Spellcaster.
