This article contains lore or information taken from Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and/or its manual.

The catapult's purpose is destruction and mayhem, and those who are its target will reap only death. Chaos reigns supreme as the ground shakes with the approach of these gruesome machines. Walls and buildings prove no barrier to the devastation of the Orcish catapult. Although they are sluggish and huge, your forces will prove unstoppable when you command these devices.[1]

Information

A Catapult is a very powerful unit which can tear down any structure in a matter of seconds. A single direct hit from a catapult can kill any unit (except Daemons) as well as any units in squares adjacent to the point of impact (except Water Elementals, Knights/Raiders and other Catapults). For maximum efficiency, Catapults are best placed behind the main army to provide both cover fire and extra firepower. A good strategy would involve attacking the enemy's base with Catapults and having a group of units to protect the Catapults. With the former's high range, the enemy's structures will be destroyed within seconds. The Catapult's disadvantages are that friendly fire is possible and that it is very slow and inaccurate.

Note that Catapults will attack enemy units automatically ONLY if there are no friendly units that will be effected by splash damage from the missile. If you select the Attack command and specify a target, the catapult will fire at the selected target regardless of friendly unit proximity.

  • According to the old Blizzard website, the Catapult 'issue' with targeting enemy units too close to the player units had been addressed by version 1.21, however, this update has been in the game since 1.12. [2]

Against buildings, Catapults do less damage:

Building size Damage
(Direct Hit)
Damage
(Near Miss)
2x2 Buildings
Farm (Human), Farm (Orc)
Tower (Human), Tower (Orc)
108 15 or 30
2x2 Buildings

108, 130, 183 15 or 30
4x4 Buildings

  • If the Catapult's base damage is lowered, the damage to various buildings are also lowered. The ratios appear to be: 42.5% (small), 51% (blacksmith), 54.5%(medium) and 72%(large). All values are rounded up.
