This article contains lore or information taken from Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and/or its manual.

Poisonous and huge, these spiders are found in dwellings long forgotten by time and man. Their bite is venomous, and their many legs make them an agile opponent. Having grown so large from years of hunting increasingly larger prey, they have learned to hide in dark places and attack from the shadows.[1]

The Warlock clan have used their magiks to create the hideous abomination that they call spiders. Mutated from the smaller creatures commonly found in the area, these huge poison fanged beasts are twisted and predatory. While some are controlled by the Warlocks, many grow too large to maintain control over, and are released into the forbidden lands. These giant spiders lurk in dark, dank places and spin their webs, seeking to entrap the unwary.[2]

Information

A Spider as seen in the Warcraft: Orcs & Humans Manual.

Spiders can be summoned by Warlocks and Medivh. They are expendable fighting units best used for scouting; pretty weak and useless in open combat. They can also serve as cannon fodder for Catapults: while the Spiders are distracting the Catapults, rear in some units and dispose of the Catapults. They can also be used to mob enemy Conjurers and Clerics, or to harass Peasants.

Compared to Scorpions, they are weaker against armored units but stronger against unarmored ones and their attacks are significantly faster. They are more useful against computer-controlled than human opponents because the former don't research armor upgrades.

Spiders can also be encountered as dungeon monsters. They are present as such in the campaign missions Medivh and Northshire Abbey as well as in some Custom Game dungeon maps.

Spiders have a "Magic" bar that will slowly decay as time passes. When it is emptied, the Spider will continuously lose HP until it dies. Note that any Spiders that are present at the start of a dungeon mission are not subject to decay.

  • In the game files, Spiders are given a cost of 200 gold, but this is inconsequential since Spiders cannot be produced by any sort of building.[3]
