The Dragons fly into battle.

When the qiraji started their first invasion of Kalimdor, Anachronos agreed to enlist the bronze dragonflight against the marauding qiraji with the night elves. Even with the might of the dragons backing them, however, the sheer numbers of the qiraji and silithid proved overwhelming. And so Anachronos called upon the progeny of the remaining flights, including Caelestrasz of the red dragonflight, who convinced his flight to enter the war.[1]

Caelestrasz, along with Arygos and Merithra, pushed the qiraji back into Ahn'Qiraj to allow Anachronos, Fandral Staghelm, and the night elves to create a magical barrier to hold in the qiraji. The three dragons and their companions flew headlong into the qiraji legions, into the city where they hoped their sacrifice would not be in vain. Though the magical barrier was created, the three dragons were lost within the walls as prisoners of the Old God C'Thun.[5][6] The three were presumed dead. In fact, the trio was subjected to the inhumane horror of captivity by C'Thun, but the three dragons fought the madness of the Void for a thousand years.[7]

World of Warcraft

A thousand years after the War of the Shifting Sands, Merithra, Arygos, and Caelestrasz were freed when the Might of Kalimdor attacked Ahn'Qiraj. Freed from their torment at last, the three dragon heroes refused to abandon the assault. Instead, they rallied alongside the champions who had amassed, hoping to end the Old God's growing influence for good.[7]

Calen facing Deathwing.

Caelastrasz eventually made his way to the Twilight Highlands. When Alexstrasza confronted Deathwing in the skies above Grim Batol, Calen offered to join her but was told to stay on the sidelines in case anything happened to her. After several minutes of battle, Deathwing and Alexstrasza fell towards the ground, clutched tightly in each others' claws, determined to destroy each other. Calen and an adventurer flew to Alexstrasza, who was exhausted and gravely injured in her visage form. Deathwing fell further down the mountain, prompting Calen to declare him dead, but Deathwing rose moments later. Calen ordered the adventurer to take his mother and retreat while he attempted to hold Deathwing back.[8] Calen survived the battle but Deathwing escaped, after which Calen tasked the adventurer with fighting the black dragonflight in the Obsidian Forest.[9]

Calen later joined adventurers in the final battle within the Bastion of Twilight against Deathwing's consort Sintharia and her twilight brood. Though he was able to hold her off for a time, Calen was ultimately killed. However, his sacrifice gave the heroes the power needed to defeat Sintharia.

Temple of Ahn'Qiraj

C'Thun alive:

Even if you somehow manage to free us without defeating C'Thun, we would focus all our powers to see the beast banished back to the hell from whence it came - AT ANY COST.

C'Thun defeated:

Our freedom would have meant nothing if C'Thun had survived. You are truly a champion of prophecy.

Vermillion Redoubt

Deathwing has returned. He's seized Grim Batol and much of the highlands, and I feel near powerless to stop him.

Soon, our queen shall arrive, and together we shall put the once Earthwarder in his place.

Trivia

  • Calen is voiced by Sam Riegel in Cataclysm.
  • Blizzard originally planned for Korialstrasz to be the red dragon that aided players in the battle against Sinestra in the Bastion of Twilight and sacrificed himself to ensure victory. It would've made a lot of sense for Krasus to be present given his history with Sinestra, and since he was an important, recognizable character, his sacrifice would have had meaningful impact. However, Blizzard eventually realized that Krasus was slated to die in the not-yet-released Twilight of the Aspects, and so they used Caelestrasz instead.[10]
