As the metalworker of the town, he is responsible for the grade and quality of the steel used in your weapons and armor. If funds are devoted to the refining of his craft, he can upgrade the materials and skills used, allowing the creation of better swords and shields. His talents are also sought after in the construction of specific goods and building materials that are essential to other professions.[1]
Information
Blacksmiths are used to upgrade the attack and armor of most of your units. They are also required to build Knights, Catapults and Towers.

Notes
- The Warcraft: Orcs & Humans Insider's Guide correctly specifies that Shield upgrades apply to all units and buildings,[2] but incorrectly claims that Sword upgrades provide bonuses only to Footmen, Knights and Lothar, when they in fact apply to all your units except for Archers, Spearmen (due to benefiting from Arrow Strength upgrades) and Catapults (due to having a different set of rules regarding it's attack). It also incorrectly states that Sword upgrades increase Minimum (Piercing) damage, when they actually increase Random (Basic) damage. Even non-combat capable units such as Peasants, Peons, Wounded, Griselda and Garona benefit from the damage increase.
- The computer never researches weapon or armor upgrades. The only exception are computer-controlled units in the missions Medivh and Northshire Abbey, which begin the game with full upgrades.
Trivia
- In Versions 1.00 and 1.01:
- Blacksmith data can be found within the game. They do not have sprites or icons and cannot be built. With memory editing they can replace another building, but leave the game vulnerable to crashing.
- Blacksmiths have no construction requirements. The Sword Strength upgrade applies to all units, except for Catapults.
- Attempting to research the 2nd upgrade will reward the player with the PURCHASE RELEASE VERSION OF WARCRAFT text.
