Medivh is the eighth mission of the Human campaign in Warcraft: Orcs & Humans.

Mission briefing

A new crisis has arisen that threatens to end the lives of all who would serve the King. The evil warlock Medivh has begun draining the soul of the land itself to increase his dark powers. You must take a party into his tower and destroy him before he summons enough energies to devastate all who would oppose him. Beware his mastery of the black arts, for legend speaks of his ability to command daemons of Hell.

Guide

To win this mission, the player must wipe out every enemy on the map, not just Medivh. Arrange your units in a way to keep them alive as best you can: Place your Knights in the front line, Archers in the next row and Clerics in the back. Your extra Footmen can hang out in the back lines and replace any Knights that are slain in your attempts to reach Medivh. Fortunately, no random units will move through the caves on their own to attack your forces, so they can move around without worrying about any surprise anbushes.

Head south and setup your lines at the mouth of a branch along the path. Send a Knight east and lure the Fire Elemental to your lines. With Knights along the front, they can safely take 2 hits before dying. If you keep a Cleric selected, you can heal the unit that takes damage. Your Archers should do as much damage as possible before the Fire Elemental closes in to do their damage.

Head south again and bank around until you approach an open room with cobble floors and walls. There is another Fire Elemental in the room with a couple Skeletons providing escort. Setup your lines again and lure the enemy forces into them. Once they are defeated, advance to the southeastern corner of the room for several Slimes will approach and attack. Bring all your units in to engage and attack. Do not worry if the Slimes catch you without a line setup; their low damage potential means they will be taking their sweet time killing any unit; just keep an eye on the health of a unit if they are heavily surrounded and heal them if needed.

Head north along the eastern tunnel and stop when you see more cobble road. There is a large nest of Spiders ahead. Use a Knight to lure them to your lines (They are the only unit you have that match their speed). They are not a serious threat, but they are not an enemy unit you would want to surround your Archers or Clerics with.

Head west, but do not go too far in. Setup a line, then move a Knight southwest to get the attention of several Skeletons and a Fire Elemental. With them out of the way, send a Knight west, smash a door open, then 'slowly' move forward a step at a time to get another Fire Elemental's attention (If you move too far in, you will attract some badly timed attention). Bring the Elemental back to your lines, take it out, then move your Knight back into the room and attract the attention of a massive Daemons. These guys hit a LOT harder than the Fire Elementals and require a lot more punishment (The only advantage is they attack a bit slower). With your Knight back on the lines, make sure a Cleric has been selected and have him heal anyone who is being attacked.

  • Alternatively, you could have your Clerics cast Heal on the Daemon to damage it, greatly reducing it's health so your forces can kill it more easily.

Bring all your forces into the room where the Daemon was and get ready for the toughest part of the fight: Medivh, himself. Enter the next room and he will summon a Daemon to attack you, plus provide the monster with long-range magical support. Expect to take some losses, but both can be killed with your current forces (assuming you have not lost too many).

The Easy Way

One trick you can do to make this a little easier is to take out Medivh early on. At your starting point, place your Archers along the easternmost wall (you should be able to line up 4 of them) and keep your Clerics nearby. Cast Far Seeing a little ahead of where the Archers are and you should find Medivh. Start healing the Archer that comes under attack as the two sides exchange fire. When you run out of magic, switch to the other Cleric and continue healing. Is this is done right, Medivh can be killed off early on and he won't be able to summon any Daemons to engage your forces (That will just leave the one near where he is found).

Notes

  • Unlike the Orc mission The Deadmines, killing Medivh does not cause all remaining enemies on the map to chase after the player's forces.
  • All units in this mission (player's and the enemy's) start with all weapon, shield and speed upgrades, though the enemy does not use some of them. Given that weapon and armor upgrades cancel each other out, this setup benefits your Archers' damage-dealing capabilities.
  • Once Medivh appears on the player's map, he will summon a Daemon if his magic bar is full. Otherwise, he will summon Spiders to no end.
  • Ranged units can fire through walls. There is a row of spaces near your starting position from where one of your Archers can attack Medivh. Note, however, that he can hit your forces back, his attacks are fast and deal lots of damage. Nonetheless, it is possible to kill him this way if you rotate your Archers to keep them from dying and heal them continuously with your Clerics.

Trivia

  • The Last Guardian described the place of Medivh's death as a cave with simple iron furniture, and Warcraft III showed the place to be a fiery dungeon. Both depictions may be a reference to this mission.
