The Riverpaw Pack[1] is a clan[2] of gnolls indigenous to Westfall and Elwynn Forest.[3]

History

Years before the First War, a group of Riverpaw gnolls led by Matriarch Bluepelt unsuccessfully attempted to abduct a young Prince Llane, heir to the kingdom of Stormwind.[4]

In the years after the Third War, the Riverpaw pack became an ominous threat to Stormwind, raiding farms and human villages throughout Elwynn Forest. Many speculated that the gnolls had conspired with another force, which was equipping them with weapons, tactical leadership, and magic.[1] The pack enslaved a kobold clan from the Redridge Mountains, making them take over and mine gold[5] in the various mines in Elwynn Forest and Westfall. The Riverpaw proved themselves to be merciless taskmasters, forcing the kobolds into an existence of never-ending drudgery.[6]

Though it was unclear what the gnolls were after, the Stormwind Marshals had realized that the creatures posed an obvious threat to the kingdom and had to be eradicated.[1] Deputy Rainer at the Westbrook Garrison issued a plea for aid to adventurers. He highlighted that a large, unmanageable pack had infested the woods south of the guard tower, at Forest's Edge, with another group having taken hold near Stone Cairn Lake to the east. To prove that the gnolls had been dealt with, adventurers were required to bring back Painted Gnoll Armbands as proof of their deed.[7] The Stormwind Army had also placed a generous bounty on Hogger, the Riverpaw leader, asking bounty hunters to slay the beast and bring his claw to Marshal Dughan in Goldshire as proof of his demise.[8]

Eventually some of the gnolls were found carrying papers, indicating that the Riverpaw were potentially working with the Defias Brotherhood. There were payments being processed between the Defias and the Riverpaws.[5] This information was later corroborated by Wiley the Black and Captain Danuvin.[9][10]

The Riverpaw could also be found in Westfall, mainly in the Dust Plains but also along the northern and western shores. Captain Danuvin at Sentinel Hill tasked adventurers with patrolling the grasslands to track down and slay any gnolls they could find, bringing back Gnoll Paws as proof.[10]

The Riverpaw pack was still active in Elwynn and Westfall at the time of the war against Deathwing. During this period, Hogger was finally captured and imprisoned in the Stormwind Stockades alongside many of his pack.[11]

Meanwhile in Westfall, the Riverpaw were actively attacking the humans in the region. Marshal Gryan Stoutmantle of the Westfall Brigade, suspecting the gnolls were being controlled by an external force, tasked adventurers with slaying them and recovering their attack orders.[12] The orders revealed that the pack was being manipulated by "Helix" and an unknown "Admiral." This and the red cloths looted from the Riverpaw, located in the northern reaches of the region during Lieutenant Horatio Laine's investigation, hinted at their continued involvement with the Defias Brotherhood.[13][14]

The Riverpaw in Westfall had made the Dust Plains as their "unofficial capital." Captain Danuvin dispatched adventurers to assassinate their leader, Jango Spothide, and take out any gnolls that stood in their way.[15] Upon Jango's death, Danuvin remarked that it would take the Riverpaw weeks to recover from the blow.[16]

Eventually, the imprisoned Hogger organized an attack against the guards from within the Stormwind Stockades, using his followers to kill Warden Thelwater's men. Adventurers were dispatched to put an end to Hogger, whose death the guards believed would "plague the Riverpaw for years to come and hopefully put an end to their attacks on our people."[17]

Following the Fourth War, the Riverpaw were still causing trouble for the Westfall Brigade, who were keeping them at bay but could not get them to go away. Though they were slightly less well-organized than they used to be due to the defeat of Hogger.[18]
