Official lore heights

The following represents the lore height of playable races in World of Warcraft.

These values come from either Blizzard's own internal height chart or from official novels, making them the most canonical data available and thus take priority over other sources.

  • The War of the Ancients Trilogy, as well as other sources, broadly refer to night elf height in general, placing it at 7' without making any specific distinction for either of the two genders.
    • Player model heights for night elves are not far off and do in fact even out at 7' due to females being 6'9" and males being 7'3", both are 3" away from 7' in either direction.
  • Zandalari at large in Vol'jin: Shadows of the Horde are described to stand "at least a head taller" than a male jungle troll.[4] And some are even taller than that.[5]
    • Male Zandalari considered short for a Zandalari troll are still taller than male jungle trolls.[6]
    • Female Zandalari stand taller than most non-Zandalari trolls.[7]
    • A female Zandalari standing "at least a head taller" than a male jungle troll would make them roughly 9'6" tall, making male Zandalari roughly 10' tall.

Internal height chart

On Twitter, Sean Copeland had in the past mentioned the internal height chart and also said that Blizzard was working on making said chart publicly available, however, the only sources we actually have archived of the internal height chart are for orcs and tauren, all other mentions of the internal height chart have been part of tweets that have been removed since and weren't archived in time, which sadly leaves no reliable source to be used.

"Blizzard is working to make their internal height values publicly available.[8] Sean Copeland suspects the game models being shorter is due to a game limitation.[9]"

Player model heights

The following represents the latest player model height of playable races in World of Warcraft, used as substitutes for lore height due to most races having no official values mentioned by Blizzard regarding their height in lore or the internal height chart.

The accuracy of these values may or may not be correct for every race. However, they are likely not far off, as it is important that a race's in-game appearance—including height—matches what it would be in lore. An example we have are orcs; their internal chart height matches the player model closely, giving credence to the below values being more or less correct. With exceptions being made for the tallest races (e.g. tauren and Zandalari) to prevent them from getting stuck in doorways not made with tall races in mind.

Height chart containing most playable races.
Note: Male gnome and tauren heights are outdated, up-to-date values can be found in the table.

Notes and trivia
  • Goblins are the only playable race whose female model is taller than the male model.
  • Despite dracthyr visages using blood elf and human base models, their models' heads have been heavily edited, resulting in the slight height difference from their source material.
  • Earthen are 15% larger than dwarves.
    • During Kaydeethree's Q&A interview at BlizzCon 2023, the Earthen were said to be 20-25% larger.[10] That answer might have been either slightly off, or the Earthen's size was changed after later development.
  • The measuring unit within World of Warcraft is "yards", as can be seen on the tooltips of spells and abilities. Knowing that, creature models can then be imported into Blender to have the height of the model's highest vertex measured.
    • The base unit in Blender is the same as in World of Warcraft, and for a male human specifically, the topmost vertex on a male human's head in T-pose is 2.02343 yards tall, which equates to:
      • Inches: 2.02343 (yards) × 3 (feet) × 12 (inches) = 72.84348" / 6'0.8435"
      • Centimeters: 2.02343 (yards) × 91.44 = 185.0224392 cm

Non-playable races

These values come from official novels, making them the most canonical data available and thus take priority over other sources.

Race Child Adolescent Female Male
Annihilan - - - 16'[np 1]
Dryad - 5'3"[np 2] - -
Felguard - - - 9'[np 3][np 4]
Gnoll - 5'4"[np 5] 5'7"[np 6] 5'10"[np 7]

Murloc - - 3'2"[np 10][np 11] 3'[np 10]
Ogre 5'4"[np 12] - 7'[np 12] - 10'[np 13] 6'[np 14] - 12'[np 14][np 12]

Trivia

  • Female murlocs tend to be slightly larger than males.[np 11]

Unconfirmed

  • According to concept art where a female vrykul is compared to a female night elf, vrykul women are roughly 10'4" tall.
    • If the above turned out to be correct, male vrykul would likely be around 11' give or take.

This section represents the height of playable races taken from works published by BradyGames such as the World of Warcraft: Beginner's Guide and World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor Signature Series Guide.

The legitimacy of these values should be taken with a grain of salt as BradyGames' guides have been found to contain wrong and inconsistent information on multiple occasions.
The two height tables below have inconsistencies and are not recommended for use.
