Location Western Lordaeron

Western Silverpine Forest, or simply Western Silverpine,[1] is a vast, ancient forest that runs along Lordaeron's rugged western coast. The land ranges from fairly flat to hilly, and is nestled among even taller mountains. Gilneas borders the forest to the south, the Hillsbrad Foothills to the southeast, while Tirisfal Glades lays to the north. Lordamere Lake serves as Silverpine's eastern border.

Silverpine Forest is the edge of the Forsaken homeland, and the southernmost point where effects of the undead plague can be seen in the plant life. This woodland is haunted and wild, characterized by its tall, silver-barked pines towering over grassy knolls. The forest is eerily silent save for the occasional unnatural howling echoing among the trees. Mossy overhangs shiver in the cold breeze, and the trees are all sickly or dying. Dilapidated farmsteads and abandoned mines dot the land, home now to the darker denizens of the woods.

Forsaken control the northern forest and that region serves as the staging area for their armies that march into the besieged kingdom of Gilneas. What remains of the human population retains control of the southern forest, but they are desperate and their forces thinly stretched. Since the fall of the Greymane Wall and the spread of the worgen curse, the Gilneas Liberation Front has decided to strike back at the Forsaken after their first invasion, openly fighting against their oppressors.

Though the territory belongs to the Forsaken, their claim was disputed by the wizards of Dalaran, Gilneans and the raised Gilnean noblemen that now have entrenched themselves along with the Scourge remnants in the Baron Silverlaine's former fortress, the Shadowfang Keep.

In the aftermath of this dispute, by the time of the Blood War, the Forsaken had solidified control over Silverpine; including turning Shadowfang Keep into a bio-weapons facility. After the Battle for Lordaeron, the region became a prime target for the Alliance, claiming some parts of the forest as well as attacking Forsaken outposts throughout the region.

Some ettins left Gilneas after the Cataclysm and the fall of the Greymane Wall and now roam Silverpine.[2]

History

The western region of Silverpine Forest, sometimes called Western Silverpine Forest, was home to many of the castles built by

Third War

Shortly before the Third War, the lords of Western Silverpine Forest supplied King Terenas Menethil II with his finest cavalrymen: an elite order of knights called the Blood Dragons. The Blood Dragons were ruthless and brutal warriors, earning themselves a fearsome reputation among both their enemies and peers. Their methods were seen as extreme and cruel to most, and they would readily kill those they deemed weak or honourless. They would reportedly pillage the hamlets they traveled through, and were known to torture their captives with horrifyingly elaborate devices of inquisition. Nevertheless, they were consummate knights known for their peerless martial prowess in battle.

Concern quickly grew among court that their dishonourable actions would upset the villages under Lordaeron's dominion, and could likely cause them to revolt if not rectified. As a result, King Terenas disbanded the Order of the Blood Dragon, and stripped the knights of all their titles and holdings, banishing them back to the forests of Western Silverpine. The lords of Western Silverpine took great offence to this action, and as a result, seized the opportunity to withdraw their forces when the nation of Gilneas left the Alliance of Lordaeron.

During the Third War, the Undead Scourge swept through the forests and lowlands of Western Silverpine, but were never able to surmount the rough terrain and reach any of the great fortresses along the mountain range. The noble lords of the land cloistered themselves within their great castles, sealing those outside their gates to a grim fate beyond. However, as years have passed, each of their gates remains shut, the fate of their inhabitants unknown. Some claim a small population of Western Silverpine's denizens has endured these many years, forced into the shadows and feeding upon rats and vermin to survive. The windows atop the highest towers of these castles flicker with light on odd nights. Rumours say that the noble families still occupy these fortresses, somehow surviving all this time.

Geography

The jagged shadows of the mountains stretch over this land of night, and cold winds blow down from the peaks. It is a land of harsh winters that paint the ground blindingly white. To go out after dark in such a winter is almost certain death, but to go out at night in the summer is little safer.

It is in Western Silverpine that the woods of southwestern Lordaeron become dense forests, shadowy places patrolled by packs of large, perpetually hungry wolves. In the heart of this land is the Cursed Hollow, where the canopy of trees is so tangled that a permanent night is created underneath them in which many strange fungi grow. In the west, steep cliffs overlook the coastline. The winds and currents along this coast are incredibly treacherous to unwary vessels.

The landscape of Western Silverpine is dominated by three ancient castles belonging to the ruling houses of the realm. Decades of neglect have caused the great spires of these towering fortresses to crumble and decay, and the land all around is littered with the detritus of their collapse. Massive ruins riddle these parts of Silverpine, and many creatures of the night now take refuge in their remains.
