Temple of Qri'vexx

End boss Empress Qri'vexx, Sha of Terror

Zoralin the Amberborn is the fifth boss encounter located within the Temple of Qri'vexx raid. He has been reanimated by the Qri'vexxi Elders and evolved by the energies of Amber. He is a DPS race and his Elite mode requires his carapace to be destroyed while under a high number of fast stacking debuffs. Battleguard Gri'mak, now allying himself with the outside heroes, brings his assistance to bear during the fight with Zoralin.

Background

The mighty Zoralin, Kunchong champion of the Qri'thik, has been fighting for the mantid ever since his birth at the hands of now Empress Qri'vexx. Not much is known about him due to the face that Qri'vexx keeps him under severe watch to the point of being overprotective. It is whispered among the Qri'thik mantid that Zoralin was sent to destroy Klaxxi'vess but ultimately fell in battle to the mighty Kovok. Following his demise, the Elders of the Qri'thik have combined their powers together to raise the mighty beast once more and fight for them once again. The Amber Lord has taken it upon himself to flood Zoralin's bloodstreams and veins with powerful Amber energies, granting the kunchong power beyond its imagining. It now has the strength to decimate armies upon armies and if it is sent out into the world again, nothing will remain in its destructive wake.

Abilities

Zoralin enrages at 7 minutes for Normal and Heroic difficulties. This becomes 12 minutes on LFR. Following the enrage, his will cast a Shattering Stomp with a 900% damage increase that guarantees a raid wipe.

  • Spell burningsoul.png Amber Infusion Important —  An overflowing surge of amber substance flows through the body and veins of the target. Increases damage dealt by 10% (LFR: 5% /Heroic Difficulty: 20%) per stack. Damage taken is also increased by 5% (LFR: 1% /Heroic Difficulty: 10%) per stack. Lasts 1 minute and persists through death and immunities. Multiple attacks will apply Amber Infusion. Heroic Difficulty Amber Infusion lasts for the duration of the encounter.

Zoralin

Zoralin the mighty Kunchong assaults his enemies with the full fury of Qri'vexx.

  • Ability warrior cleave.png Angerslice Tank Alert —  The furious Zoralin uses this ability in place of his melee attack. Deals 600,000 (Heroic Difficulty: 900,000) Physical damage to his current enemy and inflicts an additional 25% (LFR: 10% /Heroic Difficulty: 50%) of this damage to the target's closest ally. Applies Amber Infusion to the current target each time this attack lands. 3 sec cast. 25-man: Deals 1,000,000 (LFR: 500,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 1,300,000) Physical damage and an additional 25% (LFR: 10% /Heroic Difficulty: 50%) of the damage to the targets closest ally.
  • Ability warlock improvedsoulleech.png Dreadful Roar Heroic Difficulty Deadly —  Empress Qri'vexx appears briefly and fills Zoralin's mind with terror. The sudden change in his thought process prompts him to unleash a roar indicative of his newfound fear. Deals Shadow damage equal to 75% of all player's maximum health. Afflicts targets with the Dreaded effect for 10 seconds, which sends players running in fear for 3 seconds and increases damage taken by 50% for the duration. This ability cannot damage Gri'mak. 1 sec cast. 35 sec cooldown.
  • Ability mage livingbomb.png Invasive Substance Magic Effect disease Damage Dealer Alert —  As players attack Zoralin in melee range, the amber coating his body that keeps him active splash onto the attackers. Deals 50,000 (LFR: 25,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 100,000) Nature damage every 2 sec. for 40 seconds and causes the amber to take root into the player. As players continue to attack Zoralin while affected by Invasive Substance, the amber will painfully grip their body, dealing 150,000 (LFR: 75,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 300,000) Nature damage and applying a stack of Amber Infusion. This ability will also apply Amber Infusion each time it deals periodic damage. This ability is treated as both Magic and Disease and can be cleansed by spells that can remove such effects.
    • Spell sandexplosion.png Corrupted Amber Deadly —  If Invasive Substance lasts more than 10 (LFR: 60 /Heroic Difficulty: 5) seconds, its amber takes root into the player for another 10 seconds. After this time has elapsed, the amber violently burns out from within the affected player. Deals 2,000,000 (LFR: 600,000) Nature damage to that player and all nearby allies within 10 yards, splitting the damage with each player hit. Applies Amber Infusion to each player hit by this ability. 25-man: Deals 6,000,000 Nature damage to the host and divides the damage with all allies in 10 yards. Heroic Difficulty After the amber takes root into the player, it will instantly kill its target and all players within 10 yards.
    • Inv misc volatilelife.png Debilitated Amber Heroic Difficulty disease —  When Invasive Substance is removed by a dispel effect, it will not be removed completely and instead takes on a less threatening form. Causes the player to absorb all healing which in turn causes the amber to corrupt its host, dealing increasing Nature damage every 2 sec. equal to 50% of all healing taken while under this effect and applying Amber Infusion each time this effect deals periodic damage. Lasts 30 seconds. This amber will leave the body harmlessly the moment its host reaches 10% of maximum health through damage. If players attempt to dispel this effect, the amber will bury itself deeper into its target, refreshing this effect and applying another stack of Debilitated Amber. If players continue to dispel those under this effect, the amber will turn into Corrupted Amber at 5 stacks.
  • Ability warstomp.png Shattering Stomp Important —  Zoralin roars with intense fury and leaps into the air. Shortly after, he comes crashing down onto the ground. Deals 400,000 (LFR: 200,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 600,000) Physical damage to all players and causes Zoralin's legs to get stuck in the ground, preventing him from moving. The impact stuns him for 15 seconds and allows players to climb onto his hide. The impact also releases a burst of amber into the vicinity, applying Amber Infusion to all players. 3.5 sec cast. 60 sec. cooldown.
  • Spell quicksand.png Burning Amber Blood Important —  Taking severe damage causes Zoralin to bleed from his wounds. This amber blood oozes out onto the ground beneath him that covers a 10 yard radius. Anything that enters the strange blood suffers 60,000 (LFR: 30,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 120,000) Nature damage every 0.5 sec. for as long as they remain in the blood. Also applies Amber Infusion each time they take damage. The blood remains for the duration of the encounter. Zoralin oozes the amber blood when damaged for 20% of his health and then continues oozing it for another 5 seconds. Heroic Difficulty Zoralin will regenerate 2% of his maximum health every 0.2 sec. for as long as he remains in the blood. The burning blood will also snare the movement speed of those within it by 50%.
  • Achievement raid mantidraid05.png Fury of the Qri'thik Tank Alert —  Zoralin goes into a rage the moment he is damaged to 10% health. Physical damage dealt is increased by 75%. In addition, the cast time of Angerslice is reduced to 0.75 seconds. Heroic Difficulty Zoralin will also release a burst of amber substance into the air, applying Amber Infusion to all players every 1.5 seconds.

Zoralin's Carapace

Each time Zoralin performs Shattering Stomp, the impact stuns him and grants players the opportunity to climb onto his hide. Up to 3 / 5 / 7 (10 / LFR / 25) players can climb onto his back at a time. Players will stay onto Zoralin's Carapace for 45 seconds before falling off.

  • Inv misc monsterscales 20.png Zoralin's Carapace Damage Dealer Alert —  The thick hide of Zoralin has been coated with restorative amber energies. This allows it to withstand massive siege strikes and attacks from above.
    • 43,500,000 (10-man Normal)
    • 121,700,000 (10-man Heroic)
    • 65,250,000 (25-man Raid Finder)
    • 130,500,000 (25-man Normal)
    • 365,100,000 (25-man Heroic)
  • Ability creature amber 01.png Amber Splash Healer Alert —  When Zoralin's Carapace is destroyed, it begins to gush out liquid amber into the surrounding area. Inflicts 60,000 (LFR: 30,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 80,000) Nature damage per sec. and applies Amber Infusion each time this effect deals damage. Lasts for the duration of the encounter. Zoralin will also be damaged for 15% (LFR: 30% /Heroic Difficulty: 5%) of his maximum health following the destruction of the carapace.

Battleguard Gri'mak

Qri'thik War Hero Gri'mak lends his aid to players in the fight against the nearly unstoppable Zoralin. He can be healed and buffed by players. He cannot take damage or suffer from the effects of Invasive Substance but all other abilities affect him normally.

  • 10: 109,870,150
  • 10H: 167,980,420
  • LFR: 164,805,225
  • 25: 329,610,450
  • 25H: 503,941,260
  • Spell burningsoul.png Fused with Amber Healer Alert —  As Gri'mak takes damage from Zoralin, the amber flows within his bloodstream as well but reacts differently due to his being of the same race as Zoralin. Damage dealt and healing taken is increased by 20% (LFR: 10% /Heroic Difficulty: 40%) lasting 1 minute. Heroic Difficulty: Lasts for the duration of the encounter.
  • Ability warrior warcry.png Fury Shout Heroic Difficulty —  Gri'mak unleashes a battle cry intended to boost the morale of his allies. Increases the damage and healing done by players by 125% for 30 seconds. 2 minute cooldown.
  • Ability warrior warbringer.png Qri'thik Strike —  Gri'mak strikes Zoralin with great strength. Deals 400% weapon damage and pierces the kunchong's thick hide. Reduces armor by 5% for 45 seconds. Stacks up to 10 times. As Zoralin takes damage from this ability, he becomes increasingly angry. This forces him to unleash Amber Volley. 8 sec cooldown.
    • Spell fire ragnaros lavabolt.png Amber Volley Healer Alert —  Taking damage from Qri'thik Strike forces Zoralin to angrily release a barrage of acidic amber into the vicinity. Deals 225,000 (LFR: 112,500 /Heroic Difficulty: 450,000) Nature damage to all players and Gri'mak. Applies Amber Infusion to every target hit by this ability.
  • Ability warrior weaponmastery.png Dancing Wind Blade —  Gri'mak uses his hidden magic to animated his weapon, forcing it to fight where he cannot. This blade assists players when they attack Zoralin's Carapace. Gri'mak will continue attacking unarmed. The Wind Blade will use Qri'thik Strike while Gri'mak will not be able to. The blade's use of this attack will still cause Zoralin to unleash Amber Volley. Lasts until players fall down from the hide. 20 second cooldown.
  • Ability warrior rallyingcry.png Enhancing Battle Roar Important —  Upon witnessing Zoralin fall below 15% health, Battleguard Gri'mak lets loose an empowering shout that strengthens the morale of his allies and himself. Increases melee, ranged and spell haste by 50% (LFR: 25% /Heroic Difficulty: 75%) for 60 seconds. Heroic Difficulty The cooldown on players' abilities will be reduced by an amount equal to the haste provided by this ability.

Strategy

This boss is quite a tough DPS race encounter with limited movement needed. This fight favors ranged over melee due to one of Zoralin's main mechanics. However, this mechanic can be handled safely.

The main debuff in this encounter that is constantly stacking over time is Amber Infusion. This buffs players' damage dealt but it also amplifies the damage taken during the encounter. If players aren't paying close attention to the events occuring during the fight, this "buff" can quickly turn deadly. Every attack performed by Zoralin will apply Amber Infusion, meaning players will be dealing and taking increased amounts of damage.

Zoralin's main tank attack is the Angerslice ability that replaces his melee swings. This deals a decent amount of damage but the special "niche" about this attack is that a percentage of its damage (which varies by difficulty) is dealt to whoever is closest to the tanking player. This should be the second tank, who stands right on the main tank.

When players, mainly melee, attack him, Zoralin will apply Invasive Substance to those attacking him. This applies an important DoT that takes priority for healers. This DoT deals periodic damage to those affected, applying Amber Infusion when doing so. Not to mention that as players under this debuff take bursts of damage as they attack Zoralin (applying Amber Infusion even more), the Amber Infusion effect makes players receive insane amounts of damage from this effect alone. Fortunately, this debuff is treated as both Magic and Disease so almost any healer can remove it. If healers are quick to remove this effect to moment its applied, melee can safely do their business with little caution for Invasive Substance's effects.

However, if Invasive Substance ever lasts more than 10 seconds (on Normal), it becomes corrupted and turns into Corrupted Amber, applying a 10 second debuff that cannot be dispelled. If anyone has this effect, they must be vocal and call for players to stack onto him/her. After that time runs out, they will deal a hefty amount of damage to those 10 yards nearby, splitting the damage with them. Amber Infusion will also be applied to each player hit, so if there is too much damage being taken for healers to handle, less players can group up on the afflicted player and use cooldowns to survive the damage.

If players want to, they can intentionally take several ticks from Invasive Substance (and the burst damage from it due to continued attacks) to acquire extra stacks of Amber Infusion. This allows players to have a nice damage boost early into the encounter to burn Zoralin down faster. Of course this comes with a price as the damage taken from the boss increases as well.

Every minute of the encounter, Zoralin will cast Shattering Stomp. This deals hefty damage (hitting harder as Amber Infusion builds in stacks) and applies Amber Infusion to players hit by it. The impact causes the boss to be stunned, allowing players to climb atop his hide to attack his carapace. Players stay on top for 45 seconds before falling down. Players can take the time to burn the carapace down quick. With the Carapace destroyed, Zoralin takes a high percentage of his health in damage (for Normal and LFR mode). However, the destroyed carapace will release Amber Splash to the raid, dealing an increasing amount of damage to the players and applying Amber Infusion as it deals periodic damage. If players acquire a high amount of Amber Infusion stacks and destroy the carapace, and then defeat Zoralin, his elite mode would have been triggered since Amber Splash will be dealing increasing damage until the encounter is over.

Whenever Zoralin loses 20% of his health, his Burning Amber Blood will form under him and he will bleed it out for another 5 seconds. This blood lasts for the duration of the encounter. Of course, no one should stand in the blood as it will quickly kill them. As he loses more health, the ground will be covered in much more blood on the ground, slowly limiting available movement spots.

Stay out the Amber blood, heal and dispel those under the effect of Invasive Substance and respond to the Shattering Stomp mechanic (and going up to DPS the carapace). When damaged to 10% health, he enrages via Fury of the Qri'thik which increases his Physical damage by 75%. The time on his Angerslice is reduced to .75 seconds. This effectively increases his damage against the tank, and his Shattering Stomp will hit very hard if he is allowed to get one off. At this point, players can continue burning him down to claim victory.

Gri'mak

Battleguard Gri'mak, the fourth boss of this raid, will also help players during the fight. He helps deal damage and provides a raid damage/healing boost when the encounter is almost over.

Fused with Amber is the debuff he gains when taking damage from Zoralin. He will deal increased damage per stack and takes additional healing. He has a high amount of health so not much healing is needed on him but he does get low, healers can focus on him for a bit to get him back up.

Other than his melee swings, Gri'mak will assist with Qri'thik Strike in reducing his armor by 5% for up to 10 stacks. This attack deals a high amount of damage combined with his melee attacks. He can easily deal a high amount of DPS with this ability alone. However, each strike that lands forces Zoralin to cast Amber Volley on the whole raid including Gri'mak. This adds extra periodic damage to the raid along with adding yet another stack of Amber Infusion. This attack comes often so healers should be ready to counter this ability, especially as the Amber Infusion effect climbs in stacks.

When it is time to go up top for the carapace, Gri'mak assists with Dancing Wind Blade, attack Zoralin unarmed and unable to use Qri'thik Strike. The blade itself will end up using that attack, keeping up with the DPS from Gri'mak and forcing Zoralin to continue casting his AoE attack. The blade goes away after the 45-second window to attack the carapace is over.

Players can freely use Heroism/Bloodlust at the beginning of the encounter since Gri'mak will cast a much more powerful ability that resembles the aforementioned spells. At 15% health, he will use Enhancing Battle Roar that increases players' haste by 50% on Normal mode. This is much more stronger than a player's Bloodlust/Heroism. With this buff, combined with the ever-stacking Amber Infusion effect, raids will be able to finish Zoralin off quite quickly. At 10%, Zoralin will use his enrage but with the provided haste from the Battle Roar, the damage done under the enrage will be easily countered by healing.

Heroic Changes

  • Amber Infusion lasts for the duration of the encounter. The same applies for Gri'mak and the Fused with Amber effect.
  • Zoralin gains the Dreadful Roar attack from Empress Qri'vexx. This adds an extreme amount of pressure to healers in keeping up with the damage on the raid, especially tanks.
  • If Invasive Substance lasts for 5 seconds, it becomes Corrupted Amber and after 10 seconds of taking root in the target, it will instantly kill its host and any ally nearby. This makes Invasive Substance a top priority for being dispelled.
  • Invasive Substance cannot be completely dispelled, instead turning into Debilitated Amber. This absorbs all healing for 30 seconds and all attempted healing applied to the target will deal an increasing amount of damage to the host. This will prevent the wrong player from being dispelled more than once accidentally.
  • Burning Amber Blood will fatally snare players in its radius and will heal Zoralin quickly if he remains in it for too long. The more blood on the ground the less room players have to move out of, to prevent deaths and unwanted boss heals.
  • Upon enraging at low health, Zoralin will also periodically release Amber Infusion, increasing the amount of damage players will take, and deal, over time.
  • When casting Enhancing Battle Roar, the haste provided will proportionately reduce the cooldown on all player's abilities. This also affects Gri'mak's attacks, which means an increased amount of Qri'thik Strikes going out and the resulting Amber Volleys.
  • Every two minutes of the encounter (effectively three times), Gri'mak will cast Fury Shout. This grants players a massive damage and healing boost which helps healers deal with the increased damage being taken. The damage boost provided allows players to "meet" the DPS check required for Heroic difficulty as the damage buff provided by Amber Infusion is not enough to kill Zoralin in time.
