Centurion Ka'lak is the first boss of the Temple of Qri'vexx. He guards the inner halls and sanctums from intruders with his trusted entourage guards.

Background

Ka'lak has been known for his calm and friendly nature among his people. However, something has stirred his emotions and twisted his thoughts, a rare occasion for this respected warrior of the Mantid. Scouts of the Klaxxi noticed dark energies seeping from the roots of the temple and terrifying cries are heard echoing across the Dread Wastes with the Qri'vexx temple being its source. Whatever is going on down in the temple, no one is able to find out the cause as the entrance is heavily and recklessly guarded by a newly strengthened Mantid warrior. Those wishing to investigate the activity of the Temple must bypass the mantid warrior and his party of loyal followers.

Abilities

Centurion Ka'lak, and any of his guards that are still alive, will enrage after 12 minutes. The enrage occurs at 10 minutes on Heroic difficulty.

Centurion Ka'lak

When engaging his enemies in battle, Ka'lak will attempt to destroy his foes in battle with everything he's got.

  • Ability warrior rampage.png Rising Anger —  Centurion Ka'lak's anger grows during the course of the encounter. Damage and Haste is increased by 5% every 40 seconds. This effect stacks. The cooldown on Ka'lak's abilities will be reduced in proportion to the amount of haste he has.
  • Inv sword 2h mantid 01.png Mortal Blade Tank Alert —  Centurion Ka'lak inflicts a quick strike on his enemy target, causing 150% weapon damage and wounding the target. Healing effects applied to the target is reduced by 10% for 20 seconds. This effect stacks up to 10 times. 6 sec cooldown.
  • Ability warrior bladestorm.png Blade Whirl Important —  Whenever Kal'lak witnesses one of his guardians die in battle, he performs a whirlwind attack, dealing 250,000 (LFR: 125,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 500,000) Physical damage to all nearby enemies per sec. for 8 seconds. In addition, Centurion Ka'lak will also fire sharp blades in all directions, striking all players for 75,000 (LFR: 37,500 /Heroic Difficulty: 150,000) Physical damage every second for 8 seconds. Channeled. Heroic Difficulty Will instantly shatter Battle Mender Tiz'zik's Amber Barrier ability.
  • Ability shaman cleansespirit.png For the Empress! Deadly Important —  Whenever all of Ka'lak's guardians are under the effect of Crowd Control, he shouts in praise of Empress Qri'vexx, causing all guardians to break from their crowd control and deal 100% more damage with 75% additional haste. All of the guardians will become immune to Crowd Control effects for the duration of this ability. Lasts 1 minute. Haste will reduce the cooldown on the guardian's abilities based on the amount of haste they possess. This ability does not occur for LFR difficulty if all of Ka'lak's entourage members are under the effect of a crowd control ability.
  • Ability warlock everlastingaffliction.png Blessing of Qri'vexx Deadly —  If Ka'lak is damaged below 60% (LFR: 40% /Heroic Difficulty: 80%) health while at least two entourage guardians are alive, he calls for Empress Qri'vexx to bless him. The Empress, under the overwhelming corruption of the Sha, fills him with a surge of power unrelenting. Full of both rage and terror, Centurion Ka'lak roars in agony, increasing his damage dealt by 100% with an additional 100% haste. Lasts 5 minutes. LFR: Increases damage dealt by 50% and grants 50% haste. Heroic Difficulty Increases damage dealt by 200% with 200% increased haste. Ka'lak will also emit Terrifying Shadows, dealing 100,000 Shadow damage per sec. to all players.
  • Spell nature slow.png Amber Chain Heroic Difficulty Important —  Ka'lak occasionaly surrounds two of his entourage guardians with an Amber Chain, linking them together. The stinging pain of the Amber Chain causes any crowd control effects currently affecting them to be removed and makes them immune to such effects for the duration. However, being linked together drains their physical forms, increasing damage taken by 100% for the duration. Lasts 45 seconds. 45 second cooldown. If only one guardian remains, Ka'lak will link himself with that guardian.

Strategy

Despite being the first boss of The Temple of Qri'vexx, Centurion Ka'lak will prove to be quite a tough encounter, requiring the raid to handle the boss and his adds throughout the fight.

Centurion Ka'lak

The main boss himself, Ka'lak, does not possess a whole lot of abilities but the ones he does have can tax players and their ability to fight the encounter their way.

Rising Anger will constantly stack over the course of the fight. The haste it grants will greatly reduce the time between Rising Anger stacks, causing Ka'lak to gain these stacks much faster the more haste he has. This serves as a soft enrage, making it important for players to end the encounter before Ka'lak reaches insane levels of this stack.

Mortal Blade is the typical "tank taunt off each other at certain stacks" ability Ka'lak will use quite often. Eventually with the increasing amount of Rising Anger stacks he gains, this ability will be used every second, hitting harder as it does. If the boss ever gets to this point (and he might), kiting him may be an option to give tanks a chance to let their stacks drop before resuming the taunting business.

Blade Whirl will only be used whenever an add is killed during the encounter. Those in melee range are advised to move away from Ka'lak until this attack finishes. If desired, the raid can stack up for AoE heals to deal with the damage of Blade Whirl, especially as the Rising Anger ability increases in stacks. If the adds are killed quick enough, this AoE damage will be low as the raid has a lot of time left to burn the boss before Rising Anger becomes a problem.

It would be in the raid's best interest to not crowd control all of the adds, unless they want to experience a very deadly For the Empress! ability. This will break the CC on all adds and grant them a hefty damage boost which will end up wiping the raid. Keep some of the adds crowd controlled.

To reduce the amount of time players have to kill Ka'lak after downing the adds, bring Ka'lak down low but enough for him to not trigger the Blessing of Qri'vexx ability, which makes the damage he inflicts much more higher. For Normal mode, he triggers this ability at 60% health, so keep him around 65% until the adds are all down. Afterwards, it will be safe to nuke him down before the Rising Anger stacks overwhelm healers. The enrage is pretty forgiving but do not take it for granted. Regardless, Rising Anger is much more deadlier than the enrage due to the fact that it occurs much faster over the course of the fight.

Sonicweaver Vra'niss

One of Ka'lak's guards is Sonicweaver Vra'niss, who is one of the more dangerous adds of the fight. He only has 3 abilities but they all make him a priority to be Crowd controlled.

Amplify Voice increases his ability damage by 50%, which allows him to kill the raid if he can get any of his spells off. When its time to kill the Sonicweaver, stuns will help prevent him from casting. If he does manage to get a cast off, cooldowns may be needed to live through the damage, with and without this buff.

Sonic Shout is an interruptable attack that cannot be allowed to finish its channel, as it will cause Vra'niss to gain Amplify Voice again (or refresh it if its already on him). Interrupt this attack the moment it goes off.

Sound Wave is a highly dangerous ability that can stress healers with its damage and short cooldown. Under Amplify Voice, this ability will kill almost anyone. Fortunately, this damage is reduced based on range so players can move away from Vra'niss before this goes off to survive the damage dealt by this attack. In addition, when Sonicweaver Vra'niss dies, Ka'lak will gain this ability and use it to full effect. Just with Vra'niss, cooldowns need to be used to survive this damage; moving away from him just won't cut it and Rising Anger will only make this attack hurt much more.

Alchemist Qri'zar

Alchemist Qri'zar is another one of Ka'lak's entourage member. He alternates between two different Flask buffs, granting him two abilities per Flask. He is just as dangerous as Vra'niss in terms of raid damage. His melee attack is weak, making it no problem for a tank to hold him and tank Ka'lak together.

When using Amber Flask, he gains two Amber-related abilities. Both attacks can and should be interrupted to reduce the amount of damage he can deal when the time comes to killing him.

Amber Bolt will be used nonstop until someone interrupts Qri'zar. Doing so dampens the amount of damage he can deal to the raid with this attack, as it causes players hit by this to take more damage from the attack.

Amber Corrosion is a targeted channel attack that inflicts increasing damage to the target. Eventually the targeted player will die from this attack unless it is interupted quickly as it should be. If Amber Flask is affected Qri'zar the moment he dies, Ka'lak will gain this ability and continue using it, requiring players to keep up on the interrupts.

When using Acid Flask, he gains two Acid-related attacks. Both of these attacks are powerful and players should be ready to react to them when they go off.

Acid Bomb calls for players to quickly move away from it before it explodes. It will (if not almost) one shot any player hit by it. No should be struck by this attack and thus put unwanted stress on healers.

Acidic Splash hits all players and deals extra splash damage which calls for spreading out. This attack will be used once each Acid Flask phase. Centurion Ka'lak gains this attack when Qri'zar dies while under the effect of this Flask effect. This forces players to stay spread out if they manage to kill him during Acid Flask.

Bladedancer Shel'nik

Another one of Ka'lak's guardians is Bladedancer Shel'nik. His melee attacks are the hardest hitting of the four guards but his abilities aren't as threatening as the others.

Slice and Dice, just like the Rogue ability, increases Shel'nik's attack speed. However, he will only cast this effect when he switches targets. One cooldown should be enough to survive the increase in damage from Shel'nik. Centurion Ka'lak will gain this ability when the Bladedancer dies. He will also apply the Slice and Dice effect when he switches targets, something he will do quite often thanks to Mortal Blade.

Malice Strike will deal moderate damage and apply a Combo Point to the target. This is similar to the Rogue's combo point mechanic. Each combo point on the tank causes Shel'nik's finishing moves to deal 10% more damage per point.

Rupturing Wound is a finishing move that applies a Bleed effect that deals DoT damage based on the amount of Combo Points used. Shel'nik will attempt to use this attack whenever he gains any amount of combo points.

Dreadful Poison has a chance to become applied to Shel'nik's target, with the chance reducing each time it is. This deals moderate damage and can be cleansed before he performs Venomous Strike. It is best to remove this effect each time he applies it to the tank, to lower the overall damage inflicted to the tank and to prevent a Venomous Strike from going off.

Venomous Strike will consume the Dreadful Poison debuff and all combo points to deal a high amount of damage to the tank. However, he can only use it on a poisoned target. So as long as a tank is cleared of any poison effect, this attack will be nonexistent.

Battle Mender Tiz'zik

The last of the entourage guardians is Battle Mender Tiz'zik, the healer mantid of the group. Normally, raids would want to kill the healer add first and get him out of the way. However, one of his abilities require players to keep him alive for a little longer.

Amber Barrier will be cast on one of Tiz'zik's allies, shielding anyone under it from 30% of all damage. This is the key ability for the raid and it is important to keep Tiz'zik alive so that he can use this ability for as long as possible. When the Amber Barrier is out, move the targeted guardian out of it and have the raid stack up inside it. The barrier will help lessen the damage taken from the powerful AoE attacks from the boss (as he gains more abilities) and from the adds. If possible, keep Tiz'zik up as long as possible.

Restore is the heal ability used by Tiz'zik that calls for interrupts to prevent targeted adds from being healed. If a targeted add is healed by this, that mob's cooldowns will be finished, allowing them to use their abilities more faster. Counter this by interrupting the heal. When Tiz'zik falls, Centurion Ka'lak gains this ability and he must be interrupted as well.

Soul Shield will shield an add, causing them to absorb quite an amount of damage. If the shield breaks by damage, the shielded add will take more damage. However, if the add that becomes shielded is low on health, players can dispel the shield to allow the raid to quickly finish off the add before they use one of their threatening attacks. Players can use the backfire effect of breaking the shield to burn the affected add down to lessen the overall damage that guard will do.

Amber Smite is Tiz'zik's basic attack he will frequently use until another ability is ready to be used. It deals low, healable damage and should not be that much of a concern other than a nuisance.

The raid can decide which add they personally want to kill and in whatever order they want that best suits their composition. However, they must take care that Ka'lak will gain one of each add's vital abilities that puts stress on the raid. A recommended kill order should be: Bladedancer Shel'nik first (granting Ka'lak the Slice and Dice effect), followed by Alchemist Qri'zar (giving Ka'lak either Amber Corrosion or Acidic Splash), then Sonicweaver Vra'niss (giving Ka'lak the deadly Sound Wave attack) and finally Battle Mender Tiz'zik (granting Ka'lak the Restore spell). After the adds are down, the raid then burns down Ka'lak from his current health percentage (which should be close to 60% for Normal mode; however once one add remains players can cleave onto Ka'lak from the last add, which will no longer trigger Blessing of Qri'vexx).

Heroic Changes

Centurion Ka'lak

  • Blade Whirl will destroy any Amber Barrier currently active at the time of its cast.
  • If Blessing of Qri'vexx is ever activated, Ka'lak will emit Terrifying Shadows in addition to the 200% increased damage and haste.
  • Centurion Ka'lak gains the Amber Chain ability that negates the usual crowd controlling method. These chains will rotate between two different adds over the course of the encounter.

Alchemist Qri'zar

  • Qri'zar will deal 100% more damage with the abilities granted by Amber and Acid Flask abilities.

Bladedancer Shel'nik

  • Shel'nik will constantly use Slice and Dice over the course of the encounter instead of whenever he switches targets. The same rules apply to Ka'lak once he gains this ability.

Battle Mender Tiz'zik

  • Tiz'zik will also cast Quicken on the target of his Soul Shield spell. This effect can also be dispelled.
