Sap Eater Aly'vess is the 3rd boss encounter within the Temple of Qri'vexx. She has an endless hunger that is rarely satiated, but once it is, her power will increase to the point of striking fear in those that tend to her and even those that oppose her.

Background

The ever hungry Aly'vess lurks about near the Amber Dwelling, the greatest source of Amber located in the Qri'vexxi Temple. It would be foolish for those to get in the way of her and her food. Intruders can exploit her lust for food by extending her hunger for as long as possible but once she gets her maws on amber, the energies within it will warp her body and course through her veins. May mercy be upon those that are in her sights following her feeding frenzy.

Abilities

Aly'vess enrages after 12 minutes for LFR difficulty. On other difficulties, she will go berserk after 9 minutes.

Stage One: Voracious Violence

  • Inv misc monsterfang 02.png Hungry Important —  At the beginning of the encounter, Aly'vess contains a Hunger meter. She starts off at half the Hunger level. This meter increases as long as she remains hungry. at a rate of 5 Hunger energy every 3 seconds. Each time she eats from an Amber Pile or drinks from a Sap Puddle, this meter decreases by 10% until the meter depletes completely. In addition, as long as she stays hungry, all damage against her is increased by 50% (LFR: 100% /Heroic Difficulty: 25%). While hungry, she will ignore Taunt effects and players while she pursues the closest Amber Pile or Sap Puddle. If a player is currently carrying Amber or Sap, Aly'vess will pursue that player with increasing speed until she reaches that player. Her speed is determined by her current Hunger level. 50% Hunger equates to 50% increased movement speed with the bonus increasing as her Hunger level grows and the speed bonus reducing as her Hunger level lowers. Heroic Difficulty: Aly'vess's hunger grows much more faster, at a rate of 5 Hunger energy every second.

The Amber Dwelling

  • Inv jewelcrafting nobletopaz 02.png Amber Pile —  Several piles of amber lie in the corners of the Amber Dwelling. When the encounter begins, Aly'vess will head towards the closest pile and attempt to have a feast. If a player interacts with a pile, they will gain the Chuck of Amber effect, causing Aly'vess to pursue that player until she reaches them. Whenever a chunk of amber is broken off of any pile, Aly'vess will pursue the recent usurper that holds the broken Amber chunk. Up to 3 (LFR: 4 /25-man: 5) interactions with an Amber Pile will cause it pile to break down and no longer become usable.
    • Inv misc uncutgemnormal.png Chunk of Amber —  Players breaking off pieces of amber from the piles in the Amber Dwelling gain the Chunk of Amber effect. Inflicts 90,000 (LFR: 45,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 180,000) Nature damage every 2 sec. until this effect fades. Dropping the amber chunk into a sap puddle causes it to harden and forms into an Amber Pile once again but removes the Sap Puddle in the process. In addition, the player that recently breaks a piece of amber off will gain Aly'vess's ire, causing her to chase down that player.Heroic Difficulty The Chunk of Amber deals increasing damage to players as they hold it and Aly'vess will chase the player closest to her that holds a chunk of Amber.
  • Ability creature amber 02.png Sap Puddle Important —  During the Aly'vess encounter, sap will drip from the wasp hives of the Amber Dwelling and form a puddle with a 10 yard radius. Standing in the puddle deals 150,000 (LFR: 75,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 300,000) Nature damage every sec. and slows movement speed by 60%. Interacting with a sap puddle causes players to gain the Sap Aroma effect. Up to 2 (LFR: 3 / 25-man: 5) interactions will cause the puddle to dissipate. Up to 2 (LFR: 3 / 25-man: 5) Sap Puddles can be presented at all times during the encounter and will continue to grow in size until players interact with it. Sap dripping from wasp hives will cause the puddle to reform after 2 minutes.
    • Spell holiday tow spicecloud.png Sap Aroma Important —  Players interacting with sap puddles cause a powerful aroma to surround them. The sweet smell of sap attracts the attention of Aly'vess, who will target and chase that player (the latest player to gain this effect). The Sap Aroma's sticky substance causes players to move 50% slower and suffer 50% increased damage from all sources. The aroma wears off after 1 minute.

Aly'vess

  • Ability druid primaltenacity.png Devour Deadly —  When Aly'vess reaches her chosen target, she will hungrily consume them, trapping them in her maws. Without hesitation, she will bite down hard, instantly killing her target and reducing her Hunger level by 25%. The unfortunate victim will have a 5 second window to inflict 500,000 damage to her face in order to break free. If the player is successful, they will fall down from her jaws and will be free to move about once again. In addition, the player will gain Near-Death Experience. Heroic Difficulty The player cannot be freed and will not gain an opportunity to escape: Aly'vess will destroy the player the moment she captures them in her powerful maws.
    • Warrior skullbanner.png Near-Death Experience Important —  The player who survives the encounter with Aly'vess's deadly maws will become grateful to live again. Damage and healing is increased by 100% (LFR: 50%) while movement speed improves by 100% for 30 seconds. In addition, having a near death experience causes that player to become more watchful with their actions, preventing them from interacting with Amber piles or sap puddles for the duration. This effect lasts 5 seconds longer if the same player has another near death experience.
  • Inv misc volatileearth.png Devastating Slam Deadly —  The longer Aly'vess stays hungry, the more irritated she becomes. She slams her body down hard upon the ground, causing it to tremble beneath her and inflicts 250,000 (LFR: 125,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 500,000) Physical damage to all players and stops them in their tracks for 2 seconds. Ignores armor and used every 20 (LFR: 30 /Heroic Difficulty: 10) seconds for as long as she stays hungry. Any player unlucky enough to be found within 15 yards of her will suffer ten times the amount of damage. She will also slam down instantly if she senses someone beneath her, instantly killing that player (and anyone else within 15 yards) while knocking all other players down for 2 seconds. Additionally, Aly'vess will perform a Devastating Slam whenever she eats from an Amber Pile or consumes a Sap Puddle.

Stage Two: Satiated Savage

  • Ability druid predatoryinstincts.png Satiated Important —  When Aly'vess reaches 0% Hunger, she will become full and deal 100% increased damage with 100% increased attack speed based on her Satiated level. Her size increases by 25% and she will gain a Satiated meter for players to keep track off. She begins this Phase with 100% Satiated energy. This meter decreases slowly and after 3 minutes (if Aly'vess does not regain Satiated energy), she will become hungry and return to Phase 1. In addition, while satiated, Aly'vess will ignore all Amber Piles and Sap Puddles as well as players carrying chunks of amber and shrouded by sap aromas. She will also begin attacking players normally. Aly'vess's damage and attack speed bonus is reduced based on her current satiated level, dealing less damage as it lowers. 50% Satiated equates to 50% increased damage with 50% improved attack speed. Whenever Aly'vess kills a living enemy, player or mantid, during this phase, she will gain back 10% Satiated energy. Heroic Difficulty: Aly'vess will become Hungry much faster, entering Phase 1 after 90 seconds.

Qri'thik Mender

These nervous mantid rush into the Amber Dwelling at Empress Qri'vexx's command, under the order of bringing the Sap Eater under control. 2 Menders rush in at 90% Satiated into Stage Two and at 10% Satiated, right before Aly'vess enters her Hungry state.

  • Qri'thik Mender —  These mantid attempt to bring Aly'vess under control and calm her down. They will attack Aly'vess over players unless provoked.
    • 33,550,000 (10-man Normal)
    • 46,280,000 (10-man Heroic)
    • 67,100,000 (25-man Raid Finder)
    • 100,650,000 (25-man Normal)
    • 138,840,000 (25-man Heroic)
  • Spell holy rune.png Quickening Mind —  As the Mender loses health, it begins to cast faster. Every 5% health lose improves its spell haste by 5%. Passive.
  • Inv sword 136.png Volume Strike Tank Alert —  The mender attacks his target with a blade that carries within it pure sound. Deals 200% weapon damage plus 1600 to the target and slowly causes the target to become deaf. At 5 stacks, the target becomes deaf and runs around in fear at the sudden shock. Disorients afflicted player for 10 seconds. If used against Aly'vess, she will turn to decimate the mantid, killing the mender and causing Aly'vess to remain satiated for much longer. Heroic Difficulty When used against Aly'vess, Volume Strike applies a stacking effect that progressively reduces the damage she deals by 4% per stack, up to a maximum of 5 stacks lasting 25 seconds. Each time she is hit by this attack, she now has an increasing chance to kill the mender instead of killing them instantly upon a first strike.
  • Spell holy penance.png Energizing Mend Interruptible —  The mender attempts to restore himself or his ally whenever either reach 75%, 50%, or 25% health. Restores 8,000,000 (Heroic Difficulty: 16,000,000) health. 4 sec cast. 25-man: Restores 24,000,000 (LFR: 12,000,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 48,000,000) health.
    • Spell nature groundingtotem.png Vital Link Heroic Difficulty Important —  When one of the Menders reach 60% health, the other Mender will cast Vital Link, linking himself with his ally. This causes 50% of all damage to be shared with the mender that has the higher health value while all damage dealt directly to the mantid who used this ability is transferred as health to the more injured mender. Stun effects that lasts more than 4 seconds can be applied to the Qri'thik Menders which in turn causes this effect to fade.

Sap Eater Aly'vess

Sap Eater Aly'vess will assault players until she reaches 0% Satiated energy. She will ignore players she was previously pursuing and will turn to attack those with the highest threat level.

  • Ability druid ravage.png Savage Slice Tank Alert —  Aly'vess lashes at her target, inflicting 400% (LFR: 200% /Heroic Difficulty: 800%) of normal damage to that enemy. Splits damage with an additional enemy and hamstrings all enemies hit. Reduces movement speed by 20% for 25 seconds. Stacks up to 5 times. 7 second cooldown. Heroic Difficulty: Damage dealt is split between 3 additional enemies.
  • Spell nature earthquake.png Trembling Quake —  Aly'vess shakes the ground violently, staggering players and inflicting 100,000 (LFR: 50,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 200,000) Physical damage to all players every sec. for 5 seconds. As this ability is used, players will be staggered for the duration, halving movement speed for the duration and has a chance to knock players down for 1 second. Jumping can remove this effect and all damage. 10 second cooldown. Aly'vess continues attacking through this ability.
  • Warrior talent icon thunderstruck.png Devastating Leap Deadly —  Sap Eater Aly'vess leaps at a distant player, crushingly killing all players within 15 yards of the impact area and inflicts 350,000 (LFR: 175,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 700,000) Physical damage to all players, ignoring their armor. Those jumping can avoid all damage from this attack. 15 second cooldown. Heroic Difficulty: Aly'vess lands at the selected area faster based on her attack speed. In addition, if a player is killed by being crushed, Aly'vess will go berserk.

Strategy

Sap Eater Aly'vess is quite an interesting encounter and requires players to be vocally active during the first Phase of the fight. She starts off in her Hungry phase, and then enters her Satiated state. Both phases can be taxing on players.

Hungry Phase

While Hungry, Aly'vess cannot be taunted as she will pursue the nearest Amber Pile and attempt to eat it. This restores her Hungry meter which is present for players to keep track of. This meter starts at 50% and continue to grow during the encounter. As the the meter grows, so does her movement speed so when she gets to a full bar, she will eventually reach her destination. It should be noted that while she is hungry, she receives more damage from players so it is desired to keep her in this Phase for most of the encounter to deal as much damage to her as possible.

Amber Dwelling

During the Hungry phase, players can interact with both Amber Piles and Sap puddles. Doing so causing players to gain the Chunk of Amber and Sap Aroma effects respectively. In addition, the Chunk of Amber deals a hefty amount of damage to carriers so healers will have to focus attention on them as they kite Aly'vess around. Aly'vess will follow the last player to interact with the pile (and only a certain number of players can interact with any one pile or puddle). Players that will be carrying Amber chunks should do so near one another to ensure Aly'vess moves in only a single direction if one of the carriers die. Players should aim to keep her in the middle of the arena and attempt to kite her in a circle.

There are Sap puddles that take part in the encounter that all grow over time during the encounter. If left alone, they will eventually cover the whole room and overlap with one another, quickly killing the raid. There are two methods to preventing this from happening. One is to have players interact with it and gain the Sap Aroma effect which snares players and leaves them vulnerable to damage (this causes Aly'vess to fixate on the most recent player with this effect). The other method is to have players with the Chunk of Amber effect drop the amber in a puddle to reform an Amber Pile and remove the dangerously growing Sap Puddle until another 2 minutes (which then it will successfully reform and start growing again).

When the fight begins, players assigned to Amber Pile can interact with it one by one. The player who is last to take the last chunk of amber will be fixated by Aly'vess. This player will then have to kite Aly'vess in a manner that may keep her near the center of the room (preferably in a circle). Aly'vess will start increasing in speed as her Hunger level grows, eventually outrunning her target and then other carriers. To counter this, the players should drop the amber chunks into separate sap puddles. However, this should be done before Aly'vess starts to move too fast for players to outrun. Go near designated sap puddles and once Aly'vess reaches a full Hunger meter, drop the Amber chunk onto the puddles (before she reaches each of the carriers). Without anyone to fixate on, Aly'vess will resume going after Amber Piles. Since there will be Amber piles real close to her, Aly'vess will start consuming them all and reduce her Hunger level by 10% per pile consumed. If desired, she can be forced to drink the sap puddle if its between her and her fixated target. This too will reduce her hunger level by 10%. This process can be repeated several times until she runs out of Hunger energy (and thus move extremely slow) and enter her Satiated state.

Sap Eater Aly'vess

During the Hungry phase, Aly'vess will use two abilities that is related to her hungry state. Devour is used when Aly'vess reaches her target who is carrying an Amber Pile or affected by Sap Aroma. The player affected by this have 5 seconds to deal 500k to Aly'vess before they are instantly killed regardless of immunities applied (Devour goes through such effects) to them. To make this ability nonexistent, Aly'vess must not reach her target, which she will do with a full Hungry meter. If the player successfully deals the required damage to her, they break free and will gain a Near-Death Experience which grants them an useful damage or healing buff that lasts longer the more the same player gets caught (which should not happen) in her maws. If a high DPS player gets caught, and they make it out of her jaws, they can help the raid with their damage boost.

Another note to mention is that the longer Aly'vess stays hungry, the more irritated she becomes. This causes her to cast Devastating Slam, which deals strong AoE damage to the raid that ignores armor so everyone will take nearly full damage. This is used periodically for as long as she stays Hungry. If anyone is under her (within 15 yards), they will suffer a massive amount of damage that will result in their deaths. Additionally, if a player moves under her, Aly'vess will prematurely cast Devastating Slam which instantly kills that player and knocks everyone else down. Players must stay away from that 15 yard kill zone (mainly melee). In addition, Aly'vess will perform a slam when she eats an Amber pile or consumes a sap puddle. This prevents players from allowing Aly'vess to just consuming piles and puddles back to back as she will do a slam each time she does. Before allowing her to consume a pile or puddle, ensure everyone is at full health.

Satiated Phase

When Satiated, Aly'vess starts this phase with a full meter. Her damage and attack speed is increased by 100% but it is reduced with her Satiated level. She will also ignore Amber Piles and Sap puddles along with players affected by their respectively debuffs so players can safely drop them. Sap Puddles will stop forming so any that remain will continue to grow, prompting players to get rid of it quickly. After 3 minutes, unless she gains any energy, Aly'vess will enter phase one again. In addition to this, two Qri'thik Mender adds will arrive to attack the boss and the raid. They will spawn early into this Phase and right at the end. They should be killed before the raid engages the Sap Eater.

Qri'thik Mender

These adds will attack the boss over the raid unless they are attacked in which they will turn to the raid.

Quickening Mind As the mender loses health, it begins to casting faster with the spell haste increasing by 5% for every 5% health lost. This causes the mender's heal ability to become nearly impossible to interrupt once the mantid is low on health.

Volume Strike applies a stacking debuff that will disorient the tank after 5 stacks, forcing an offtank to pick up the adds. With two menders striking the same tank (using an offtank for the other mender results in Volume Strike stacking nearly the same as the main tank), the debuff will stack quick fast but prevents the effect of having both tanks disoriented at the same time, resulting in chaos among the raid. Disarming the menders reduces the time between stacks. They can be stunned which lessens the damage inflicted to the tanks since they will be dealing with Aly'vess who will now attack normally.

Energizing Mend is the heal ability that should be interrupted as often as possible before this ability becomes hard to catch an interrupt on. It heals for a decent amount of damage so keep the menders stunned (they are immune to Silence effects) when they are low on health to prevent chain casts going off.

After the first pair is dead, the raid will have a decent amount of time on Aly'vess before the menders return to the fight.

Aly'vess

Aly'vess will now attack the raid for the duration of the Satiated phase, requiring tanks to be ready to pick her up right before her Hungry meter reaches zero.

Aly'vess constantly uses her Savage Slice attack that calls for both tanks to soak the damage from this ability. At the beginning of this Phase, this attack, along with Aly'vess's melee swings, will hit extremely hard and the damage from the menders will only add to the high damage on the tanks. Cooldowns will be needed to survive the massive damage from the attacks. Once her energy starts falling below half, damage becomes safely manageable. Healers will have to work through high Satiated levels of Trembling Quake as it will risk killing players very quick. Fortunately, jumping can avoid the damage and the snare effect associated with this ability.

Aly'vess continues attacking through Trembling Quake so heals on the tank is still needed to prevent them from dying while Satiated is above 50%. Aly'vess will also use a Devastating Leap attack that causes her to jump towards a distant player, killing anyone within 15 yards and inflicting quite some damage to everyone else. Jumping can avoid this damage as well but players needed to time it with the moment she lands and their latency. No one should be killed during this Phase, especially by Aly'vess as each death causes her to regain Satiated energy, which results in an increase in her damage and attack speed. In addition, the raid can stack up behind the boss for this phase for more healing to go out, but Aly'vess will use Devastating Leap from any distant and if she jumps on someone who is stacking with the raid, then the fight is already over. If desired, players can stack up beforehand (when her Devastating Leap ability is on cooldown) so that AoE heals can be used. Just take care when Aly'vess is about to use this attack to spread out so that people have enough time to move out of the insta-kill zone before she lands.

Right as her energy is about to reach 0%, two more Qri'thik Menders will spawn to attack the raid again, forcing players to deal with them while going into the Hungry phase. Make quick work of them so that players can burn Aly'vess down much more due to the increase in damage she will take while hungry. Use long term dps cooldowns along with [Bloodlust]/ [Heroism] whenever she returns to the Hungry phase. It can be used at any time during the encounter but use it according to the remaining time left on her 9 minute Berserk timer (for Normal and Heroic).

Heroic Changes

  • Aly'vess becomes Hungry much faster, causing her to stay in that phase much longer.
  • Players carrying Chunks of Amber will start to take increasing damage from it until they get rid of it and Aly'vess will fixate on the player closest to her that carries an amber chunk.
  • Players caught by Aly'vess cannot avoid her Devour attack as they will die instantly without having an opportunity to escape.
  • Aly'vess will enter her Hungry phase much faster after entering her Satiated state.
  • When the Qri'thik Menders use Volume Strike on Aly'vess, it will apply a stacking effect that lowers her damage dealt by 4% per stack up to 5 stacks. However, with each application of this effect, Aly'vess has an increasing chance of killing the mender.
  • The Qri'thik Menders gain the Vital Link ability which causes the weakened Mender to transfer half of all damage to the other mender. If the higher health mender is attacked, damage is transferred as health to the weaker mender.
  • Savage Slice's damage is now split between 3 additional targets due to the massive damage it will do on this difficulty.
  • When using Devastating Leap, Aly'vess will land at the target area much faster based on her attack speed and if she kills a player in the selected area, she will go berserk, resulting in the raid's defeat.
