Riding (Profession) | |
---|---|
Riding is a secondary profession in which characters may learn to ride mounts, which provide movement speed bonuses and, when applicable, the ability to fly. Increasing riding skill grants further increases to movement speed. Ground mounts increase movement speed by 100% (Journeyman) and flying mounts increase movement speed by 220/420% (Expert/Master) while in the air.
The skyriding system can reach top speeds of 830%.
Skill levels
The following table lists the skill levels available that a character will learn upon reaching the required level for it:
Skill | Proficiency | Required for | Required level |
---|---|---|---|
150 | Journeyman | Ground riding at +100% speed and Skyriding (+705/830%)[n 1] | 10 |
225 | Expert | Steady Flight (+220%) | 20 |
375 | Master | Steady Flight speed increased to 420%[n 2] | 30 |
- ^ 705% in Khaz Algar and the old-world continents; 830% in the Dragon Isles.
- ^ Hybrid mounts such as the [Wonderous Wavewhisker] or the druid [Flight Form] are still restricted to 310% steady flight speed.
Additional riding skills
Unlocking the following skills is unlocked account-wide, meaning all characters on a given account learns the skill automatically.
- Increased Broken Isles ground mount speed by +20% is unlocked from [Broken Isles Pathfinder, Part One].
- Increased Argus ground mount speed by +20% is unlocked from [Explore Argus].
- Increased Kul Tiras and Zandalar ground mount speed by +20% is unlocked from [Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part One].
- Steady Flight in the Shadowlands (excluding the Maw and Korthia) is unlocked with [Memories of Sunless Skies], awarded from [60] The Primus Returns.
- Steady Flight in Zereth Mortis is unlocked from [Unlocking the Secrets].
- Steady Flight in Khaz Algar is unlocked from [The War Within Pathfinder].
Flight styles
There are two flight styles available:
- Steady Flight, The Burning Crusade flight style
- Skyriding, the Dragonflight momentum and physics-based flight style
The flight styles can be switched between each other with [Switch Flight Style], available once the player reaches level 20. Skyriding can be used anywhere where flying is allowed while steady flight usually requires completing an achievement or using an item to use that style in a given continent.
Old riding skills
Dragonflight levels and skills
Prior to patch patch 11.0.0, the riding skills were learned at intervals of level 10, 20, 30, and 40. "Dragonriding" (now Skyriding) was only learnable by completing the quest, [10-70] Dragonriding. Though after completing the quest on one character, the skill was unlocked account-wide and is automatically learned by alts by reaching level 60.
Skill | Proficiency | Required for | Required level |
---|---|---|---|
75 | Apprentice | Mounted riding (+60% movement speed) | 10 |
150 | Journeyman | Faster mounted riding (+100%) | 20 |
225 | Expert | Mounted flying (+150% in the air) | 30 |
375 | Master | Fastest mounted flying (+310%) | 40 |
Purchase system
Prior to patch patch 10.1.5, the riding skills had to be purchased from a riding trainer to learn. Normal faction discounts applied to training costs.
- Apprentice and Journeyman riding were available from all riding trainers.
- Expert and Master riding couldn't be bought from racial riding trainers and could only be learned from flying trainers associated with Stormwind, Orgrimmar, Honor Hold, Thrallmar, Valiance Expedition, Warsong Offensive, Kirin Tor, and Golden Lotus.
Skill | Proficiency | Cost | Required for | Required level | Prior to level squish |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
75 | Apprentice | 10 | Mounted riding (+60% movement speed) | 10 | 20 |
150 | Journeyman | 50 | Faster mounted riding (+100%) | 20 | 40 |
225 | Expert | 250 | Mounted flying (+150% in the air) | 30 | 60 |
300 | Artisan (removed in 9.0.1) | 5,000 | Faster mounted flying (+280%) | N/A | 70 |
375 | Master | 5,000 | Fastest mounted flying (+310%) | 40 | 80 |
Total Price | 10,304 |
Expansion-specific skills
Previous expansion areas also had their own riding skills, which were removed in patch 7.3.5:
- [Cold Weather Flying] was added in Wrath of the Lich King to allow flying in Northrend. It originally cost 1,000 and required level 77. Patch 3.2.0 added the [Tome of Cold Weather Flight], which higher-level characters could purchase for their lower-level alts. Cataclysm reduced the cost to 500 and the level to 68, at which point the Tome was removed as redundant. Legion further reduced the cost to 50 until it was removed entirely later in the expansion.
- The [Flight Master's License] was added in Cataclysm to allow flying in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, excluding The Burning Crusade zones. It cost 250 and required level 60.
- [Wisdom of the Four Winds] was added in Mists of Pandaria to allow flying in Pandaria. It cost 2,500 and required level 90. Warlords of Draenor later added the [Grimoire of the Four Winds] to the Black Market Auction House, which could be used to learn flying at level 85 instead.
- Additionally, Mists of Pandaria required the [Cloud Serpent Riding] skill to be learned to ride cloud serpent mounts; it was awarded from [10-35] Riding the Skies at exalted with the Order of the Cloud Serpent. This skill was removed in Warlords of Draenor.
Starting in Warlords of Draenor, Blizzard began tying flying to achievements available later in the expansion's lifecycle as a compromise to ensure players experienced game content on the ground without simply flying over everything, while still allowing players the ability to fly.[1] However, over time, these requirements are lifted thus allowing those without these achievements to start flying in the zones.
- Flying in Draenor originally required the [Draenor Pathfinder] achievement, added in patch 6.2.0. No longer required since patch 9.0.1.
- Flying in the Broken Isles originally required the [Broken Isles Pathfinder, Part Two] achievement, added in patch 7.2.0. No longer required since patch 9.0.1.
- Flying in Kul Tiras and Zandalar originally required the [Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part Two] achievement, added in patch 8.2.0. No longer required since patch 10.0.7.
- Steady Flight in the Dragon Isles originally required the [Dragon Isles Pathfinder], added in patch 10.2.0. No longer required since patch 11.0.0.
Classic system
Before patch 1.12.1, riding skills were single-rank abilities purchased for 20 at level 40. Each race had its own riding skill, and by default, a character could only buy their own race's riding skill. Buying a different race's riding skill required exalted with the corresponding reputation faction.
Skill | Race | Rep faction | |
---|---|---|---|
Horse Riding | Human | Stormwind | |
Ram Riding | Dwarf | Ironforge | |
Tiger Riding | Night elf | Darnassus | |
Mechanostrider Piloting | Gnome | Gnomeregan Exiles | |
Wolf Riding | Orc | Orgrimmar | |
Undead Horsemanship | Undead | Undercity | |
Kodo Riding | Tauren | Thunder Bluff | |
Raptor Riding | Troll | Darkspear Trolls |
Some skills had restrictions:
- Only gnomes and dwarves could learn Mechanostrider Piloting.
- Tauren couldn't learn Undead Horsemanship or Raptor Riding.
Additionally, characters could not learn any of the opposite faction's riding skills. As a result, faction-agnostic mounts like the [Deathcharger] and [Swift Razzashi Raptor] had no riding skill requirement.
Notes
- Though Artisan Riding (+280% flying) could no longer be learned from trainers as of patch 9.0.1, it was still given to boosted and class trial characters until patch 10.1.5.
- Pandaren who haven't completed [1-20] A New Fate and joined a faction cannot learn any riding skills, and thus cannot ride mounts.
- This can cause an odd behavior wherein the Mount Journal lists "Requires Level 10" in red text on all non-faction-specific mounts, even if the pandaren character is level 10 or higher.
Patch changes
- Patch 11.0.0 (2024-07-23): Riding skills have been changed once again.
- Apprentice Riding has been removed. Journeyman Riding has taken its place as the first riding skill learned at level 10 (was 20).
- Expert Riding is now learned at level 20 (was 30) and the steady flight speed was increased to 220% (was 150%).
- Master Riding is now learned at level 30 (was 40) and the steady flight speed was increased to 420% (was 310%).
- Patch 10.1.5 (2023-07-11): Characters now learn the appropriate mount riding skill upon reaching the appropriate level without needing to visit a mount trainer.
- Patch 10.0.7 (2023-03-21): [Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part Two] is no longer required for flying on Kul Tiras and Zandalar.
- Patch 9.0.1 (2020-10-13):
- Artisan Riding no longer available from trainers. Characters who learned it prior to the squish retain the ability. Master Riding now requires Expert Riding as a prerequisite.
- [Draenor Pathfinder] and [Broken Isles Pathfinder, Part Two] are no longer required for flying on Draenor and the Broken Isles respectively.
- Patch 6.2.2 (2015-09-01): Flying has been enabled on Draenor for characters that have attained the account-wide achievement, [Draenor Pathfinder].
- Patch 4.0.3a (2010-11-23): Master Flying Skill (310% flight speed) can now be purchased from most riding trainers.
- Patch 4.0.1 (2010-10-12):
- Master Flying Skill (310% flight speed) is now available from riding trainers in Dalaran, Valiance Expedition, Warsong Offensive at a cost of 5,000.
- Characters that already had a 310% mount pre-4.0.1 are given this skill free of charge. All other characters must purchase Master Flying to receive 310% flight speed.
- Patch 3.2.2 (2009-09-22):
- Reduced the expert riding skill price to 250.
- Changed the faction discounts for the riding skill vendors in Honor Hold and Thrallmar to use Stormwind and Orgrimmar faction, respectively. This is because newly-arrived 60s in Outland are unlikely to have any Honor Hold or Thrallmar rep.[2][dead link]
- Patch 3.2.0 (2009-08-04):
- Apprentice Riding (Skill 75): Can now be learned at level 20 for 4. Mail will be sent to players who reach level 20 directing them to the riding trainer.
- Journeyman Riding (Skill 150): Can now be learned at level 40 for 50. Mail will be sent to players who reach level 40 directing them back to the riding trainer.
- Expert Riding (Skill 225): Can now be learned at level 60 for 600 from trainers in Honor Hold or Thrallmar. Faction discounts now apply (Honor Hold for Alliance; Thrallmar for Horde). Flight speed at this skill level has been increased to +150% of run speed, up from +60%.
- Artisan Riding (Skill 300): Faction discounts now apply (Honor Hold or Valiance Expedition for Alliance; Thrallmar or Warsong Offensive for Horde).
- Patch 2.4.3 (2008-07-15): The level requirement for Apprentice Riding was lowered from 40 to 30. It also reduces the cost from 90 to 35, and its respective reputation discounts.
- Patch 2.0.1 (2006-12-05): PvP rankings also no longer grant the player an additional 10% discount.
- Before TBC, the cost of Journeyman riding was 900, so the total cost of getting an epic mount was the same as before. It has since been reduced to 600 to make it easier to buy Expert riding skill.

- Hotfix (2006-09-28): Players that had a mount in their inventory but were not given the appropriate riding skill should find that this has been corrected.
- Patch 1.12.1 (2006-09-26): The cost structure and functionality of Riding and Mounts was changed.
- Prior to that patch, Riding was an ability rather than a pseudo-Profession, and had only one rank. Each faction had its own riding skill (tiger riding, horse riding, mechanostrider piloting, ram riding) and the cost was 20, available at level 40. Exalted reputation was required to learn cross-faction riding skill, but mounts were Bind on Use and purchasable by anyone for 80. This meant that characters who were PvP rank 3 or higher could pass on the 10% discount directly to other characters by buying the mount for them. This is no longer possible because all mounts are now Bind on Pickup, and the majority of the cost is built into the riding skill training (which is no longer faction-specific) rather than the cost of the mount.
