History

World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft This section concerns content related to the original World of Warcraft.

The Tunnel Rats had moved into the foothills west of Thelsamar, setting up dens there. Mountaineer Kadrell wanted them eliminated.[1] They could also be found in the Silver Stream Mine. The mine had run dry long ago and was converted by the Miners' League into a storage depot. When the Tunnel Rats eventually took it over, the miners couldn't get their gear out in time. Though the mountaineers were planning on going inside the mine and rooting the kobolds out, the Miner's League was worried they would break their gear in the ensuing conflict, and thus mountaineer Stormpike asked adventurers to go into the mine and retrieve the gear beforehand.[2]

Mage adventurers seeking to gather materials to craft a Manaweave Robe were instructed to go to the Silver Stream Mine and gather Charged Rift Gems from the boxes left behind by the Miners' League.[3]

Cataclysm

Cataclysm This section concerns content related to Cataclysm.

A gathering between Tunnel Rat kobolds, Mosshide gnolls and Bluegill murlocs.

As of the Cataclysm, the Tunnel Rat kobolds were still present in Loch Modan and causing issues for the dwarves. A new "big shot" kobold, "Commander" Nazrim, had been stirring up the other kobolds living in the dens west of Thelsamar. Due to his leadership, they had been getting craftier at their stealing. Mountaineer Stormpike wanted Nazrim taken care of.[4] Meanwhile, the kobolds in the Silver Stream Mine had been swarming all over it. Tunnel Rat surveyors and foragers were setting up camps and sniffing around further and further every day looking for loot. Stormpike had adventurers clear out the kobolds in the outer perimeter, after which they could deal with the mine proper.[5]

After the adventurers returned from their task, they learned from Scout Dorli what the kobolds were up to. There were so many of them outside because they had troggs digging for them in the mine. The Tunnel Rat Geomancers figured out some kind of trick to control the Stonesplinter troggs due to their nature as creatures of the earth. Dorli asked adventurers to take out the geomancers right away.[6] Stormpike, on the other hand, needed someone to go to the bottom of the mine and find out who was running this trogg-slave operation, directing the geomancers and diggers. To the mountaineer's surprise, adventurers discovered it was Foreman Sharpsneer, a gnoll.[7]

Stormpike sent adventurers to report what they had learned to Mountaineer Kadrell.[8] Kadrell told adventurers that the gnolls must've moved in from the Wetlands (thus them being the Mosshide tribe), as the Loch was swarming with the Bluegill murlocs they had to have brought along. He had them go seek Cannary Caskshot, a skilled hunter who knew how to deal with the murlocs.[9] Cannary devised a plan, which then led to the murlocs turning against the gnolls, foiling their alliance and making the kobolds flee.[10][11]

Trivia

  • "Tunnel Rat" is a reference to real-life American, Australian, New Zealander, and South Vietnamese soldiers who performed underground search and destroy missions during the Vietnam War and were known by that epithet. It could also be a reference to a movie and a GI Joe character who were based off these soldiers.
