Scenario
Scenarios are short, 3-player instances, with progressive objectives and a story arc. They are completely role-less, meaning tanks or healers aren't necessary to succeed - any class combination can work. Smaller scenarios play similarly to group quests and help players earn faction reputation, while larger scenarios play out like epic PvE battlegrounds with major objectives and plenty of scripted events. They are instanced areas.[1]
From Warlords of Draenor onwards, there are no new endgame scenarios, and thus, no scenario rewards. Instead, some quests use scenario mechanics, which are seamlessly integrated into the main world using phasing, rather than being their own instances.[2] Some instanced scenarios have since been added, but rarely and are accessed via an NPC at the given location rather than through the Group Finder.
Queuing up
- Through the group finder
Queuing for scenarios works identically to queuing for a dungeon, and is accomplished via the Scenarios pane of the Group Finder interface (default hotkey: I). Players can choose a specific scenario, or opt for a random scenario. Completing a random scenario would reward the player with roughly 20 and a
[Greater Cache of Treasures] that may contain either additional gold or a randomly enchanted piece of equipment tailored to their class (though not necessarily their spec).
The scenarios section would disappear upon leveling past the Mists of Pandaria level cap (91+ at the time) up until Shadowlands where it no longer appears at any level. However, it has shown up for special events such as WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria.
- Through NPCs
Lorewalker Fu (normal difficulty) and Lorewalker Shin (heroic difficulty) are available at the Seat of Knowledge to queue for the scenarios. However, it requires two other players (three players total) to start the queue.

Single-player scenarios
Starting from a very rare drop, warlocks can undertake a very difficult solo-scenario to turn their fire green in Pursuing the Black Harvest.
There are a handful of scenarios on the Isle of Thunder that are designed for a single player. None of these single-player scenarios may be queued for the normal way by using the scenario-finder interface. Instead, the quest giver will provide a gossip option to queue for and start the scenario. All but one of these scenarios can only be completed once per player during the Isle of Thunder storyline. As such, the documentation and walk-throughs for these scenarios are provided in the quests where the scenarios take place:
[32-35] The Assault on Shaol'mara /
[32-35] The Assault on Zeb'tula
[32-35] Tear Down This Wall!
[32-35] To the Skies!
[32-35] A Bold Idea /
[32-35] Decisive Action
[32-35] The Fall of Shan Bu
The one repeatable single-player scenario is Troves of the Thunder King, the loot-grabbing scenario that requires a [Key to the Palace of Lei Shen] to begin.
Additionally, as part of Wrathion's legendary quest, he starts the solo scenario [90] The Thunder Forge.
The Proving Grounds, added in patch 5.4.0, uses the scenario mechanic. There is also one repeatable scenario as part of the Timeless Isle cooking chain. The quest
[35] The Secret Ingredient Is... is the walk-through and completion of this opens the dailies
[35 Daily] Noodle Time and
[35 Daily] Noodle Time: Bonus.
Legion introduced several single-player scenarios:
- The Mage Tower challenges, added in patch 7.2.0 and returned once again in patch 9.1.5 with Legion Timewalking.
- The Deaths of Chromie, added in patch 7.2.5
Pet battle scenarios
The Celestial Tournament takes place in a single-player pet battle scenario, where players face a series of pet tamers and battle pets. This scenario is repeatable.
Several pet battle scenarios have been added since:
Raid scenarios
The Codex of Chromie is a 20-player scenario where one helps Chromie fix time distortions in Silithus in order to repair her Codex. It is available during WoW's Anniversary and is queuable through the Dungeon Finder.
Not-yet-released scenarios
These scenarios were planned but have never been released.
