Ranged weapons include bows, guns, crossbows, any thrown weapons, and wands.
Before patch 5.0.4, these weapons, except for wands, were equippable by hunters, rogues, and warriors in their ranged weapon slot. Wands could be used by mages, priests, and warlocks in their ranged weapon slot.
In patch 5.0.4, thrown weapons were removed and the remaining types of ranged weapons were changed to be equipped into the main hand weapon slot. Warriors and rogues can still equip bows, crossbows and guns, but only hunters can shoot them.
Patch changes
Patch 5.0.4 (2012-08-28): Ranged weapon slot and thrown weapons removed. Weapons changed to main hand items. 
Patch 4.0.1 (2010-10-12): Ammo has been removed from the game. Previously, guns, bows and crosswbows required ammunition.
