Upon my arrival in Bastion, I was not marked for greatness. No fanfare followed my deeds. I was utterly unremarkable among my fellow aspirants. I now pen this tale as Chyrus, Paragon of Humility. It was by the grace of Mercia, the first Paragon of Humility, that I can yet speak of it. This story belongs to me, and to her, and to all of Bastion. This was her final and most precious gift.
This is the tale of Mercia's Legacy.
I first met Mercia as many aspirants do. After completing the Rite of Purity and the Rite of Courage, I made my way to Humility's gates. I felt myself accomplished for having overcome my trials. After what felt like centuries on the Path, I felt equal to any challenge. I was a strong, capable fighter! Free of the burdens of my past, free of the entanglements of mortal emotion!
She greeted me with a warm smile and asked what I had to offer her temple. I described the lessons I had learned along the Path. I told her I was not the greatest fighter, nor a profound scholar, nor a great craftsman, but that I was willing to work hard to prove my worth. I thought my heart was open to the experience, but she would quickly prove how wrong I was.
