I was inconsolable, for a time. I raged against the apparent futility of her sacrifice. I could not justify the loss of a Paragon, an ancient being whose wisdom dwarfed all others. I could not tolerate the loss of my teacher... and my friend. She was everything to me.
It was not until an aspirant came to me one day, expressing her gratitude for the Paragon's sacrifice, that I understood. Her final lesson was not just the worth of a soul. We kyrian understand the nature of sacrifice, of the willingness we all have to serve a greater purpose. Her final lesson was more... subtle.
I am Paragon, now. Many will look to me for answers, just as I looked to her. But I could not understand my grief, my loss, until I saw her actions through the eyes of a single aspirant. Lessons are everywhere, even for those of us who feel we may have outgrown them.
That is true humility.
