Focus
- For target focusing, see Focus target. For the Pet Battle ability, see [Focus]. For the item, see [Focus].
Focus is the resource that both Hunters and their pets expend to use their respective abilities. Focus is similar to the Rogue's Energy resource, in that it is a constant 100 points (110 with [Energetic Ally], 110/120 with [Kindred Spirits], another 5 if the Hunter is a gnome). By default the focus bar is full and when used, it regenerates fairly slowly (see below). The regeneration rate is not affected by being in combat.
Many focus-using abilities have cooldowns as well, so hunters will often be concerned with maintaining enough focus to use abilities on cooldown, rather than pooling it for large focus dumps.
Regeneration
Hunter
- 5 focus (7.5 focus with [Trueshot], 10 focus with [Pack Tactics]) generated per second, automatic.
- 10 focus generated using [Steady Shot] with [Improved Steady Shot].
- 1 focus generated for every shot using [Rapid Fire].
- 30 focus generated for every 24 Wind Arrows with [Legacy of the Windrunners].
- Max focus generated using [Trueshot] with [Trueshot Mastery].
- 15 focus (21 focus with [Intense Focus]) generated using [Kill Command] as Survival Hunter.
- 20 focus generated over 10 sec using [Harpoon] with [Terms of Engagement].
- 30 focus generated using [Flanking Strike].
Hunter pet
- 5 focus per second, automatic.
- 30 focus generated when the Hunter using [Flanking Strike].
Past implementations
During early stages of World of Warcraft development, hunters used Focus and it only regenerated when standing still. However, this distinguishing feature was dropped before launch and replaced with mana, with focus remaining limited to hunter pets themselves. Focus later returned as the resource of the class with Cataclysm, where it regenerates similarly to Energy alongside other abilities that would give boosts of focus or increase its regeneration.
Patch changes
- Patch 4.0.1 (2010-10-12): Hunters now use Focus instead of mana.
