The Abyssal Maw is a raid instance set in the Elemental Plane of Water. Following the kidnapping of Neptulon the Tidehunter by the leviathan Ozumat, the dark forces of N'Zoth have been spreading throughout the Maw, along with their naga minions.
The raid is large, consisting of eleven boss encounters, including one heroic-only encounter and an encounter that is dependent on your faction.

Layout
Unlike other large raids like Ulduar and Karazhan, the Abyssal Maw is broken apart into many separate wings that are accessed through portals in the primary staging area. Players enter the instance and instantly battle the first boss, Duke Hydraxis. After that, the battlefield area becomes a hub with vendors and repairers. In addition, two portals spawn that can take players to one of two destinations: The Nazjatar Embassy or Halls of the Tidehunter. Each of these wings consists of two boss encounters and can be attempted in any order.
After both wings are completed, General Nazgrim or Admiral Taylor will transport players to an enemy submarine where they participate in an event that acts as the sixth boss encounter. Once the event has been cleared, a third portal spawns at the hub, taking players to the Abyssal Taint where two more bosses lie in wait.
Speaking once more to your faction's commander will begin the assault on Ozumat's Stand, where the eponymous leviathan, and ninth boss, is fought. After which players are instantly ported to the Throne of the Tides to encounter the final normal-mode boss: Neptulon the Tideblighter.
On heroic mode, the entrance to one final region will reveal itself after Neptulon's defeat. The portal will take players to the Chamber of Many Eyes, an area of the sleeping city Ny'alotha. Here, players fight the raid's true final encounter, the Terror of N'Zoth. The Avatar's destruction will herald the end of the Abyssal Maw experience.

Assisting NPCs
In many parts of the Abyssal Maw, friendly (or mostly friendly) NPCs accompany players.
Admiral Taylor- Returning to Vashj'ir, Admiral Taylor leads the Alliance strike team into the Abyssal Maw. After freeing Duke Hydraxis, Taylor remains at the Waterlords' Pavilion, holding the line against N'Zoth's forces. He also leads Alliance players in the invasion of the Mega Verne and the battle against Captain Verne.
General Nazgrim- Returning to Vashj'ir, General Nazgrim leads the Horde strike team into the Abyssal Maw. After freeing Duke Hydraxis, Nazgrim remains at the Waterlords' Pavillion, holding the line against N'Zoth's forces. He also leads Horde players in the invasion of the Pincer X3 and the battle against Captain Glovaal.
Duke Hydraxis- After being cleansed of N'Zoth's black blood, Duke Hydraxis spearheads the battle to rescue his master Neptulon. He accompanies players through the Halls of the Tidehunter and assists in the battle against Ozumat.
Drottinn Bruundor- Current leader of the Kvaldir, Hrothgar considers the players the enemies of his enemies, the Naga, and assists them in battling back their menace. He accompanies players through the first half of the Nazjatar Embassy...after which he turns against the adventurers, seeking to avenge his fallen father.
Beastmaster Tima- Master animal handler from Pandaria. She has come to the Abyssal Maw to rescue Wuan Xiu, a great dragon turtle. She accompanies players through the Tainted Reaches and assist in the battle against Ozumat along with the purified Wuan Xu.
Ahune- The Frost Lord, after being humiliated once more by mortal adventurers, accepts the players as honorable warriors. He assists in the battle against Ozumat.
Captains "Jewels" Verne & Glovaal- Following their defeat at the hands of adventurers of the opposing faction, the goblin and draenei captains ready their respective submarines for battle. They assist in the battle against Ozumat.
