Original model

Commander Ulthok, the Festering Prince is the second boss of the Throne of the Tides instance. He jumps in and lands directly in front of players after defeating Lady Naz'jar and activating the defense system.

Adventure Guide

Ulthok is an incredible ancient being sent by his Old God masters to aid Lady Naz'jar with invading the Throne of the Tides. Bristling with sinister powers, Ulthok commands legions of his fellow faceless ones in the deepest trenches surrounding Vashj'ir.

Abilities

  • Ability rogue shadowdance.png Squeeze — Commander Ulthok lashes out and squeezes a random player. The player is stunned and takes 5000 Shadow damage every second for 6 sec.
  • Spell shadow shadesofdarkness.png Dark Fissure — Commander Ulthok smashes the ground in front of him, dealing 56550 to 63450 Shadow damage to all enemies within 7 yards of the impact. A Dark Fissure also opens up from the impact inflicting 9425 to 10575 Shadow damage every second to all enemies within 6 yards. In Heroic Difficulty the Dark Fissure will grow over time.
  • Spell shadow grimward.png Curse of Fatigue curse — Commander Ulthok curses a random enemy target, reducing their movement speed by 50% and melee, ranged, and cast speeds by 50% for 15 sec.
  • Ability warrior rampage.png Enrage — Commander Ulthok enrages, increasing his Physical damage dealt by 50% for 10 sec.

Tactics

Avoid the Dark Fissures that appears in front of Commander Ulthok. Healers need to make sure everyone stays topped off, especially him or herself, so that they don't die to squeeze. If the tank feels confident about holding aggro, then kiting Commander Ulthok around the room will help greatly to avoid the Dark Fissure and his Enrage. Before the first Dark Fissure he will slow the tank, so stay mobile at the start. The Dark Fissures spread out on Heroic mode, much like Putricide's gas in ICC. What this means is that once dropped, the Fissure will slowly expand until it covers everything. This means you need to plan where to drop each one so as to leave yourself enough room to finish the fight before you are engulfed.

Patch changes

  • Dragonflight Patch 10.2.0 (2023-11-07): Updated model to a C'Thrax.
Part of dungeon rework to make it more compatible with Mythic+; the model change presumably is meant indicate that this mob is a C'thrax and not a lesser Faceless One.
  • Cataclysm Hotfix (2010-12-07): Players are no longer placed oddly when affected by Ulthok's Squeeze in Throne of the Tides.
  • Cataclysm Patch 4.0.3a (2010-11-23): Added.
