Merrix is the Councilward of Dornogal and the leader of the Council of Dornogal, the ruling body of the earthen of Khaz Algar. Merrix's foremost responsibility is to protect all earthen, as it is the Edict he follows above all others.[1] As the administrator of Dornogal, he is responsible for taking care of his people, organizing workers and allocating resources most efficiently.[2] Merrix holds direct command over the Peacekeepers and the Ordinants. He also has an alternate persona named Steelvein, Dornogal's most notorious smuggler, which he uses to ensure all earthen get the goods they need.
History
Councilward Merrix was one of the four wards uplifted by the titans to uphold the Edicts and oversee the construction of the Coreway and its fortress, Dornogal.[3] As the Councilward, his role was to administer the city, lead its ruling council, and know all that transpires on the Isle of Dorn.[3] He was put in charge of the Peacekeepers, who protect Dornogal,[4] and the Ordinants, the elite forgemasters of the earthen.[5] He also allowed the Freysworn into the city, though he had the Peacekeepers watch over them at the Stormward's insistence.[6] After the earthen split into the Oathsworn and the Unbound, Merrix created Steelvein, the foremost smuggler in the city—a persona he crafted to bend the rules when needed and help all his people without directly breaking the Edicts.[1] Though the Unbound were not allowed back into the city due to the Edicts,[7] he secretly surveilled them[3] and aided them through his activities as Steelvein.[8]
The War Within
Merrix is first encountered after the nerubian assault on Dornogal, where he thanks the survivors of Dalaran for repelling the attack and welcomes them to the city as his guests.[9] Soon after, with the Coreway destroyed in the attack, he dispatched Stormward Baelgrim, along with Moira Thaurissan and adventurers, to Freywold Village to seek the assistance of Adelgonn and her Unbound in repairing it.[10] After they convinced the Unbound to return to the city, Merrix welcomed Adelgonn back onto the council[11] and organized the repairs for the Coreway.[12] Later, after Baelgrim sacrificed himself to defeat the nerubians at the Cinderbrew Meadery, Merrix declared that they would honor his memory by having the earthen stand together once again, and that they would support the outlanders in their endeavor to stop Xal'atath, no matter what the Edicts said.[13] He then sent Speaker Brinthe, alongside the outlanders, to the Ringing Deeps to bring back the Machine Speakers.
After trade was reestablished with the Machine Speakers, Merrix appeared during a Peacekeeper investigation at a Forgegrounds depot, following a tip linking it to Steelvein's smuggling operations.[14] There, he observed as Peacekeeper Kragad and an adventurer uncovered the smuggling method used and found proof of Steelvein's involvement.[15] Later, he summoned the adventurer to his office and asked them to humor him by delivering the smuggled goods to their intended recipients, hoping they would see the good that comes from Steelvein's activities. After the adventurer returned from their task, they informed Merrix that they had learned that Steelvein was having issues with Ardgrin, a trade overseer in the Ringing Deeps.[8] Subsequently, Merrix sent the adventurer on a quest to gain access to the Machine Speakeasy, a cinderbrew speakeasy reserved only for Machine Speakers, in order to speak with one of Ardgrin's employees, Obstorn.[16] After confronting the Machine Speaker in the speakeasy, Merrix revealed that he was Steelvein, in order to gain Obstorn's assistance in swaying Ardgrin.[17] Obstorn then informed Merrix that it had been Ardgrin who had tipped off the Peacekeepers. Soon after, Ardgrin penned a seditious proclamation against Merrix, claiming that he was paid off by Steelvein, and had his workers post it around the city. Merrix had the adventurer tear down the posters[18] and disperse the Peacekeepers who had caught word of the sedition.[19] He then donned his Steelvein disguise[20] and headed to Ardgrin's office near the Hallowfall Gate. There, he confronted Ardgrin, who, after a brief scuffle with Steelvein, relented and listened to what he had to say. Steelvein promised that he would get Ardgrin his ore, with aid from Obstorn as his new auditor, and brought him back into the fold.[21]
When the Hallowfall Arathi sent a request to reopen trade with the earthen, Merrix traveled to Dunelle's Kindness in Hallowfall to meet with Vaelisia Steelstrike and Auralia Steelstrike.[22] There, it was revealed that the reason the earthen and the Arathi stopped trading after the day Sargeras stabbed Azeroth—also known as the Day of Darkness by the Arathi—was that the emissaries sent by the Arathi never made it through the Ringing Deeps, and so both sides feared the other had perished. Subsequently, he signed a new trade agreement reaffirming the connection between the two peoples.[23]
When the Alliance and Horde fleets arrived in Khaz Algar, Merrix welcomed the factions into the city and had the Dornogal Steward set up their embassies.[24] A short time later, the earthen had a ceremony at the Proscenium to officially join the Alliance and the Horde in their war against the Harbinger. To do so meant renouncing the Edicts, and thus, with everyone gathered, Merrix proclaimed then and there that all the earthen of Khaz Algar were from that moment Unbound. Adelgonn then struck the titan console upon which the Edicts were written with her hammer, as a symbolic gesture of their newfound freedom. To everyone's surprise, however, the destruction of the console activated a failsafe protocol which caused a Colossal Titan Construct to appear from the sea on the southern shore of the Isle of Dorn.[25] Merrix sent the newly appointed Stormriders, alongside Jaina Proudmoore, to stop it. After the battle, Merrix asked Olbarig if he would take the mantle of Stormward. Olbarig instead proposed that Rooktender Lufsela was worthier of the title; thus, she became the new Stormward.[26]
After the Battle of Hallowfall, Merrix and the rest of the Council of Dornogal officially expressed their gratitude to the adventurers for their efforts in unifying the earthen.[27]
As Steelvein, Merrix sent one of his purveyors to the Siren Isle to evaluate what the island could offer to the earthen.[28]
