World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft This section concerns content related to the original World of Warcraft.

Originally from Silverpine Forest,[3] where he studied under Crillian, Stalvan eventually traveled down south and spent some time in Stormwind City. He later became the headmaster at the Moonbrook schoolhouse,[4] and also worked as a personal tutor for the Flintridge family. He eventually developed an indecent attraction to one of his students, a girl named Tilloa. Stalvan imagined a future with this girl, but her future groom was already arranged by her parents. When Tilloa gave Stalvan a begonia, he interpreted the gesture as a romantic overture. However, Tilloa clearly only saw Stalvan as her tutor; she compared him to an old uncle, which infuriated Stalvan and drove him to murder. It is unclear exactly what happened, but it was called "a massacre" by some of the people during the investigation of the legend of Stalvan.

Stalvan seems to have butchered Tilloa and her young groom-to-be with an axe,[5] and quite possibly her entire family as well. In his notes, he claimed that the blood he'd spilled paled in comparison to the tears he had shed. He then retreated back to his home northeast of Darkshire and remained in Manor Mistmantle until the darkness crept into him and consumed him, lonely and mad, hungering for more revenge on any person who dared come near. Through unknown means, Stalvan eventually became an undead.

Madame Eva sensed that her granddaughter was in great danger, and sent adventurers on the track of Stalvan, who seemed to be about to murder Alyssa.[6]

Cataclysm

Cataclysm This section concerns content related to Cataclysm.

By the time of the Cataclysm, the legend of Stalvan continued after he was slain by agents of Darkshire and buried on the grounds of Manor Mistmantle.[7] He is also revealed to have a brother, Tobias, who resided in Gilneas during the civil war and was afflicted by the worgen curse.

After fleeing Gilneas following its invasion by the Forsaken, Tobias arrived in Darkshire seeking news of his brother but noticed that the inhabitants were afraid to talk about it, telling him only that he was dead. After Clerk Daltry - who aided in the original investigation of Stalvan's whereabouts - directed the adventurers to the portions of Stalvan's journal, which had been taken and shredded by feral worgen during an attack on Darkshire's town hall, Tobias sought to find out the truth of what happened and turned to Madame Eva, who had begun the hunt for Stalvan years before. Using the  [Mistmantle Family Ring] carried by Tobias, Madame Eva directed the group back to Manor Mistmantle, where Stalvan rose from his grave seeking revenge, and had to be destroyed once and for all.[8]

Speculation

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

Stalvan's exact origins are unknown, but he may hail from Gilneas or the areas of southern Silverpine that were once part of it. His brother Tobias has notable ties with Gilneas: He lived there until the Cataclysm, was imprisoned as one of Lord Darius Crowley's men,[9] and later participated in the reclamation of Gilneas.[10] Additionally, Manor Mistmantle is briefly revisited during the worgen heritage questline, wherein a Gilnean champion must search the manor's grounds for a rare flower.[11] While the flower is more tied to the Emerald Dream, the developers' choice to use Manor Mistmantle may suggest it has some level of relevance to Gilneas.
