Socrethar (formerly known as Exarch Othaar) is an eredar who betrayed his kin and joined the Burning Legion, becoming the leader of the demons in Netherstorm. Rather than one of the original man'ari who joined Sargeras' Legion on Argus, Socrethar was in fact a draenei and once renowned warrior of the Light, whose only flaw was pride. Before his fall, he was the Exarch of the Sha'tari order.

History

Socrethar as Exarch Othaar in Hearthstone.

Othaar once lived in Eredath on the eredar homeworld of Argus. An echo of him called Councilor Othaar can still be found there, watching a jed'hin match at the Circle of Aspirants alongside Councilor Larohir. Othaar liked to think that the eredar must practice such a "basic ritual" as jed'hin to remind themselves of how far they had come and that Argus had much to be proud of.

Upon arrival on Draenor, Prophet Velen decided to establish a council of sages that would oversee different aspects of draenei culture. Othaar was chosen as one of its members, who were named Exarchs. The Genedar's naaru were either dead or slowly decaying, but some of their holy energies lingered. The draenei had also recovered D'ore's remains. They did not yet know whether the fallen naaru was dangerous or exactly how much of it had been consumed in Void energy. It fell to Othaar to study D'ore and its kin, analyze them, and hopefully learn enough to communicate with the other naaru and draenei beyond Draenor. Othaar became the leader of the Sha'tari, an order dedicated to this cause.[1]

When the Burning Legion manipulated the orcs into attacking the draenei, Othaar and the exarchs initially thought the orcs were victims of the world's natural disasters and elemental upheaval and merely sought to defend their holdings.[2] Upon discovering the Burning Legion had been manipulating the orcs, he and his fellow leaders knew they could no longer defend their holdings and ordered their forces to withdraw to Shattrath City and the Temple of Karabor.[3]

During the siege of Shattrath, knowing that the city was doomed to fall, Othaar, along with his fellow exarchs, argued against Velen's decision to be among the defenders of the city. Convinced that the best hope for their race's survival was under the Prophet's leadership, the exarchs persuaded Velen to leave Shattrath. Thus, Velen fled with the civilians while the bulk of their military might remained within the city in order to sacrifice themselves to ensure the survival of the draenei race and trick the orcs into thinking that they had slaughtered all of them.[4]

At an unknown point after this, he betrayed the draenei and joined the Burning Legion, becoming a man'ari eredar.[5]

The Burning Crusade

By the time of the invasion of Outland, Socrethar ruled the Netherstorm Legion forces from Socrethar's Seat. When the dreadlord Culuthas found the legendary Spirit's Song, granting him immense amounts of power to the point he broke away from the Legion and started summoning his own demons, Socrethar ordered him to bring the Ata'mal crystal to the Legion or else face definite death.[6]

After the Aldor and the Scryers discovered that Kael'thas Sunstrider's forces and the Legion in Netherstorm were working together, they set their sights on taking down Socrethar.[5][7] The accounts of Socrethar's demise differ depending on the faction. The Scryer version claims that Voren'thal the Seer bestowed upon the adventurers, who had helped uncover the scheme, an object that allowed him to project his powers across Outland. The adventurers then used this object to weaken and defeat Socrethar.[8]

The Aldor version, on the other hand, tells of adventurers being assisted by Exarch Orelis, Anchorite Karja, and Adyen the Lightwarden. They offered Socrethar a chance to repent, as commanded by the Naaru's law, but Socrethar laughed at the notion. Socrethar then had Kaylaan the Lost fight them until High Priestess Ishanah appeared to stop him. She offered herself in exchange for Kaylaan's freedom, but Socrethar struck her down instead. Ishanah's death made Kaylaan break out of his condition, and he used the Light to revive her before being slain by Socrethar for this act. Socrethar then fought the Aldor group but was ultimately defeated by them.[9]

Gossip in Argus as Councilor Othaar

Charming little game, is it not? I like to think we must practice such a basic ritual to remind ourselves how far we have come. Argus has much to be proud of.

Trivia

  • In Hearthstone, Othaar appears as a legendary druid minion in The Great Dark Beyond expansion as the captain of the Celestial Archives starship. His flavor text reads: "The temptation of limitless knowledge led some Eredar to join the Burning Legion. In the Sha'tari Draenei, the study of everything lives on."
