The Howling Oak was an area in the north of the night elven capital city of Darnassus, centered around large Gilnean oak tree. It was the new home of the refugees who fled Gilneas with the aid of the night elves following the Cataclysm and the Forsaken invasion. The tree itself was a "worgen tree", very similar to Tal'doren in the Blackwald. The area was accessible from the Craftsmen's Terrace and Cenarion Enclave from the southeast and southwest respectively. It was a place where both worgen and night elf druids trained.[1]

The Howling Oak was originally grown through the aid of the night elven druids from a seed taken from Gilneas. It stood for all the Gilneans have endured since the ruin of their kingdom, and all that their people have since accomplished.[2] Shortly after the Gilneans' arrival in Darnassus, King Genn Greymane made an appearance here, as he and his people were greeted personally by Tyrande Whisperwind.

During the War of the Thorns, the Howling Oak was ultimately destroyed alongside Darnassus in the Burning of Teldrassil. However, all the Gilnean refugees were evacuated before the fire started and moved to Stormwind City,[3] where they settled in the area around Olivia's Pond. It was Queen Mia Greymane, as a respected authority figure and the most suitable person available, who appeased the Gilnean people in the area and organized their evacuation[4] with the help of the Highborne mage Maelir.[5]

Notes and trivia

  • While Genn and Mia Greymane lived in Stormwind City, the queen spent half her time in Darnassus to support her people settled at the Howling Oak and was a frequent visitor to their encampment.[4]
  • Astrid Langstrump can be found outside the main tree selling Gilnean Mountain Horses.
  • The Howling Oak is considerably cleaner than the Goblin Slums of Orgrimmar but also offers far fewer amenities, with its main highlight being the class trainers.
  • The name "Howling Oak" is a pun in reference to the lupine worgen.
