The last free lich lord in Northrend. Funeral intends to transform the innumerable corpses in the Necropolis of Nerub into an army of the undead that will allow him to conquer Northrend uncontested.

Dungeon Journal

The last and mightiest of the liches that freed themselves from the control of the new Lich King. Funeral has gathered the remnants of the Scourge to his banner, though he is opposed in his efforts by Queen Angerboda and the vrykul that follow her. Determined to seize the crown of the Lich King for himself and destroy all rivals, Funeral has traveled with his forces into the heart of the Spider Kingdom, along the route once walked by Arthas himself. Here in the heart of the nerubians empire, he has found the Necropolis of Nerub, the resting place for the revered dead of Azjol-Nerub stretching back thousands of years.

Within the Necropolis of Nerub, Funeral has not only found the countless corpses he sought to create his army, but a massive fragment of the fabled Eye of Nerub, a relic of tremendous dark power that was shattered long ago. Tapping into the power of the fragment has bestowed enhanced powers upon the lich, and with his newfound strength he stands posed to raise the entire Necropolis itself to the surface and begin his assault on the living.

Abilities

Phase One - Lord of the Scourge

Scourge Lord Funeral's Abilities

  • Ability mage wintersgrasp.png Raking Talons  —  Funeral attacks his main target with his bony fingers, dealing a large amount of physical damage.
  • Spell frost frozenorb.png Frozen Blood  —  Freezes the blood of Funeral's primary target, reducing the damage they take by 50% for 6 seconds and the healing they receive for 90% 20 seconds.
  • Spell shadow possession.png Aura of Fear  —  Funeral's dreadful presence inspires fear in every heart. Those in line of sight with Funeral receive this stacking debuff, which causes periodic shadow damage. Stacks to 99.
  • Spell frost glacier.png Frozen Spire  —  Funeral conjures a titanic spire of ice in the center of the chamber, which slowly rises from the ground. Anyone caught when the ice is forming is frozen within the spire will be knocked back and take a massive amount of physical damage.

  • Spell frost frostshock.png Deathly Cold  —  The Frozen Spire grows colder by the second. This stacking buff periodically increases damage dealt by the Spire and reduces the damage it takes from all sources by 1%.
  • Spell fire blueflamebreath.png Cold Wave  —  Periodically releases a burst of frigid wind, dealing frost damage to all targets.
  • Spell frost frostblast.png Freezing Mist  —  When damaged sufficiently, the Frozen Spire spawn a cloud of freezing mist at the location of a random target. Anyone inside the cloud takes heavy periodic frost damage. Clouds persist for a short time.
  • Spell hunter icetrap.png Shattered  —  When destroyed, the Frozen Spire releases a backlash of dark energy that stuns Funeral for 10 seconds, and increases all damage he takes for a short time. Funeral cannot use Aura of Fear while stunned.
  • Spell frost chillingblast.png Engulfing Mist  —  The Frozen Spire produces a large cloud of Frozen Mist when shattered, which engulfs roughly a third of the chamber. This cloud persists for a short time.


Phase Two - The Eye of Nerub

When Funeral's health is reduced to 50%, he flies above the center of the chamber and draws power from the fragment of the Eye of Nerub that is suspended there, shrouding himself in a protective barrier that absorbs all damage. Players will be able to target and attack the Eye of Nerub, but the true target is still Funeral - his shield must be breached so that he becomes vulnerable again.

Funeral's Abilities

  • Spell frost manarecharge.png Draw Power  —  Funeral is draining strength from the Eye of Nerub. His focus is completely on this ritutal and he can perform no other action.
  • Inv enchant voidsphere.png Mana Barrier  —  Renders Funeral immune to all damage as long as he draws on the Eye of Nerub. It might be possible to breach this barrier with the Eye's own power. If the barrier is breached, Funeral will fall to the ground and become stunned for a short period of time, taking increased damage from all sources.


  • Eye of Nerub
  • Spell arcane blast.png Radiating Energy  —  The Eye of Nerub periodically deals arcane damage to all players. Used more rapidly when Eye of Nerub's health is low.
  • Spell arcane arcane04.png Shed Energy  —  Storms of arcane magic are manifesting in the chamber. Falling embers of magical energy will spawn and move slowly around the chamber, persisting for a short time before vanishing. Anyone standing in the energy will take periodic arcane damage.
  • Spell shadow mindtwisting.png Tear of Nerub  —  When damaged enough, the Eye of Nerub produces a Tear of Nerub. Tears will form in the air above the chamber at random locations.
  • Spell arcane arcane01.png Recharging  —  When Funeral's Mana Barrier is breached, he will cease drawing on the power of the Eye for a short time, causing it to Recharge. When Recharging, the Eye will not use any of its abilities. It will also rapidly replenish its health to full. Lasts 10 seconds.
  • Spell nature purge.png Detonate Power  —  If the Eye of Nerub's health reaches zero, it erupts in a blast of energy that deals lethal arcane damage to all players, killing them instantly.


  • Tears of Nerub

Tears of Nerub are immune to damage. If attacked they will move directly above their last attacker's location and will follow them until attacked by another target.

  • Spell arcane arcane03.png Beam of Power  —  Deals periodic arcane damage to the Tear's target. Channeled on the player that attacked them last. Gradually increases in damage over time. If the Tear switches to another target, the power of the beam is reset. Using this ability drains the Tear's health.
  • Spell arcane arcanetorrent.png Burst of Power  —  Cast when the Tear's health reaches zero. Produces a massive pillar of magical energy that deals lethal damage to anything caught in the area of effect. Strikes targets in the air as well as on the ground. This ability will breach Funeral's Mana Barrier. 3 sec casting time.


  • Frostwrath Crypt Fiend

Entombed nerubians in the Chamber of the Eye are rising from their graves. Crypt Fiends will occasionally spawn throughout Phase Two.

  • Inv misc monsterclaw 02.png Frozen Claw  —  Deals a burst of physical damage to the target and causes them to take periodic frost damage for a short time.
  • Inv misc web 01.png Frozen Thread  —  Binds a player in deathly cold silk, rooting them to the spot for several seconds and then trapping them in a cocoon that prevents any action. Players trapped in cocoons take periodic frost damage until they are cut free.
  • Spell frost arcticwinds.png Frozen Breath  —  Players within the frosty presence of a Crypt Fiend have their casting speed reduced by 200%.


  • Icebone Skeleton

The energy of the Eye has conjured skeletons made of ice to attack Funeral's enemies with melee strikes. Icebone Skeletons will periodically spawn throughout Phase Two and move to attack targets greater than 30 yards from any Frostwrath Crypt Fiends.


Phase Three - The Last Lich

When Funeral's health is reduced to 30%, he will absorb a tremendous amount of dark energy from the Eye, transforming himself into a Shadow Lich. A wave of dark power will destroy any active adds and burst any remaining Tears of Nerub.

Scourge Lord Funeral's Abilities

  • Ability mage wintersgrasp.png Raking Talons  —  Funeral attacks his main target with his bony fingers, dealing a large amount of physical damage.
  • Ability vehicle oiljets.png Blacken Blood  —  Funeral imbues the blood of his primary target with dark energy. Any healing done to the target will afflict them with Black Blood, which deals periodic shadow damage to them. The more healing they receive, the greater the damage Black Blood inflicts. Lasts for 25 seconds.
  • Spell shadow blackplague.png Horror Spire  —  Funeral conjures a massive roiling column of dark energy in the center of the chamber. Screaming faces and leering skulls can be seen writhing within the spire. Anyone caught within the Spire when it first forms takes a massive amount of shadow damage and becomes horrified, running directly away from the spire for 8 seconds.


  • The Horror Spire
  • Spell shadow soulleech 3.png Spire Scream  —  Periodically releases a burst of dark energy, dealing shadow damage to all targets. Increases shadow damage taken.
  • Ability rogue envelopingshadows.png Shadow Mist  —  The Horror Spire spawn a cloud of Shadow Mist at the location of a random target. Anyone inside the cloud takes heavy periodic shadow damage and becomes horrified, running madly for 4 seconds. Clouds persist for a short time.
  • Spell shadow shadesofdarkness.png Shadow Cloud  —  The Horror Spire produces a large cloud of Shadow Mist, which engulfs roughly a third of the chamber. This cloud persists for a short time.
  • Ability warlock eradication.png Drawn to Horror  —  The Horror Spire will channel a beam on several random targets, taking control of them and forcing them to walk towards the spire. Other players can interrupt the effect by walking between the afflicted player and the Horror Spire. Players who interrupt the beam will become the target of a beam after a short time. The Horror Spire will begin by casting only a few beams, and will periodically add additional beams.

Strategy

The first phase of the battle will involve dealing with Funeral alone, although he will immediately conjure a massive Frozen Spire that acts as a secondary target. The Spire blocks line of sight, which is necessary to halt the damaging effects of Aura of Fear. Spires deal more damage the longer it persists and destroying them will render Funeral more vulnerable to damage, so they must be destroyed periodically.

At 50% health, Funeral will begin channeling power from the Eye of Nerub, which will become targetable. Funeral himself will active Mana Barrier, making him immune to damage. Damaging the Eye of Nerub will produce Tears of Nerub, which can be used to pierce Funeral's Mana Barrier and render him vulnerable.

At 30% health, the final phase begins. Funeral will gain new abilities and conjure a single, untargetable Horror Spire. The Horror Spire is a grave threat that produces numerous harmful effects that players must avoid while dealing with Funeral.

Heroic Difficulty Heroic Mode

  • Funeral no longer takes extra damage when stunned.
  • Mana Barrier must be struck with three Tears of Nerub within 5 seconds of each other in order to be breached. Otherwise, the Tears will have no effect.
  • Horror Tears fall from above throughout Phase Three, dealing a burst of shadow damage to anyone caught in their impact.
  • The Horror Spire porduces Drawn to Horror more rapidly.

Achievement

  • Horrible - Defeat Funeral without allowing anyone to set foot in the Horror Spire.

  • Xarosan yells: Perfect timing, heroes. Allow me to relieve our friend of the true prize to be had here.
  • Xarosan captures the fragment of the Eye of Nerub.
  • Xarosan yells: The last of the Scourge that opposed me moved faster than I anticipated. I nearly lost this precious fragment of the Eye to them. What great providence that you took it upon yourselves to halt this devious threat to the good people of the world!
  • Funeral yells: You... filthy usurper! That power must be mine!
  • Xarosan yells: That's enough from you, I think.
  • Xarosan releases a bolt of arcane energy that shatters Funeral's phylactery. Players slowly begin to recover.
  • Xarosan yells: The lich was talented enough, but even he would have eventually been devoured by the power of this artifact. Only I know how to make proper use of the Eye.
  • Xarosan yells: And soon you will see firsthand how I will use it... for with this final fragment, it is complete!
  • Xarosan yells: I have accomplished all that I wished to do in Azjol-Nerub. The vessel and the focus are both mine. The nerubians have served their purpose. My Twilight Scourge and I will take our leave of the Spider Kingdom now.
