Karazhan: The Malevolence Rift is a level 95 raid dungeon containing a single boss encounter, along with an additional heroic mode only boss encounter. Together with The Dreadforge and Utgarde Catacombs, it forms the third raid tier of the Spider Kingdom Expansion.

Background

The dark tower of Karazhan has always been a place of ancient and mysterious power. Even millennia before the first stones of its foundation were laid, a shadow of the tower existed, its presence so significant that echoes of it stretched forwards and back through time itself. For all the ley lines of the planet, the mystical arteries of Azeroth, converged at a single point in Deadwind Pass, a nexus of pure arcane energy, and it was here that Karazhan was built.

Over the centuries it has been home to the mightiest mages Azeroth has ever known, until its previous tenant, Medivh, abandoned it to demons and restless spirits. The eredar prince, Malchezzar, attempted to seize it in the wake of Medivh's death, but his efforts were ultimately futile, and even the most powerful demons never suspected just how potent the energies of Karazhan truly were.

The tower that looms large in Deadwind Pass is more than it appears - for beneath that tower, extending deep underground, is another tower, an inverted but otherwise identical version of the tower on the surface - a dark reflection. In the lowest reaches of that tower, Medivh had wrought his dark schemes when in the thrall of the dark titan, Sargeras. There lies the ley line nexus, the true heart of all arcane magic on Azeroth.

It is here that the Malevolence has come to nest, having escaped the confines of Northrend's ley line network. Freed from the twisted ley lines of the north by the interference of the Twilight Cult, the Malevolence now seeks to empower itself with the heart of Azeroth's arcane power.

Dungeon Journal

Karazhan, the dark tower of Tirisfal, the convergence point of all mystical ley lines in Azeroth. Best known as the sanctuary of the Guardian Medivh, it has been home to many creatures of power over the centuries. It's latest occupant, the demon prince Malchezaar of the Eredar, was recently slain, and the restless spirits there fell silent. But a greater evil is on the rise in the hidden depths of the dark tower... the Malevolence.

Once trapped within the ley line network of Northrend, the Malevolence has escaped its confinement and now lurks beneath Karazhan, nesting within the very heart of Azeroth's ley lines. The area surrounding Karazhan has been blasted apart by the realignment of the ley lines, exposing the deeper structure of the tower. In the deepest depths is the ley line nexus, where the Malevolence has begun to manifest a physical form for itself. If it escapes the ley line network, it will begin a rampage across Azeroth that no one will be able to stop.
