The Four Dark Riders of Karazhan.
Background
Four of the most powerful of the Dark Riders were selected by the Malevolence to become his agents when the arcane monstrosity arrived in the depths of Karazhan. They have been empowered to protect him at all costs. Three of the Riders, Lord Ravenous, Lady Carmine, and Lord Nergal are fought separately as mini-bosses to unlock the normal mode Malevolence encounter. In heroic mode difficulty, all four Dark Riders can be fought as a heroic only boss encounter. Defeating the four Dark Riders in heroic mode will unlock heroic difficulty for the Malevolence encounter.
Dungeon Journal
Lord Ravenous - the Hungerer, Lady Carmine - the Bloody Damsel, Lord Defilus - the Scythe of Despair, and Lord Nergal - the Tainted King are the mightiest of the dark riders of Karazhan. The Malevolence has bound them to its service and turned them into its elite guard. All four riders will unite to protect the Malevolence Rift from the most powerful of intruders. The Dark Riders must be defeated to unlock Heroic Mode difficulty for the Malevolence boss encounter.
The Encounter
Phase One - The Horsemen Ride
Players will deal with all four dark riders simultaneously in phase one. Riders do not share a health pool. Whenever one rider is slain, the others heal all damage done to them. The slain rider will then revive as an invulnerable phantom and gain a new ability. When the last rider's health has been reduced to 50%, the next phase begins.
- Empowered by Death — Any horseman that has their health reduced to 0 will revive after a short time and receive this buff. Empowered by Death unlocks a new ability and increases their damage.
Lord Ravenous
- Hungering Strike — Places the debuff Hungering Gaze on his target. After 2 seconds, Hungering Gaze becomes 10 stacks of Hungering Strike. Every time Ravenous attacks a target with stacks of Hungering Strike, a stack is removed and Ravenous recovers a small portion of his health.
- Mark of Ravenous — Inflcits a target with the Mark of Ravenous. This debuff absorbs all direct healing done to the target. The target reduces the effectiveness of all healing done to anyone within 10 yards by 50% and receives 25% of that healing for themselves.
- Devour — Ravenous targets an area and then Devours the essence of everyone within it. Everyone affected by Devour takes a massive burst of shadow damage and has their essence consumed by Ravenous, restoring his health and increasing his damage for a short period of time. Devoured players cannot be healed for a short period of time.
- Swallow Souls — Afflicts several random targets, tearing their souls out of their bodies and suspending the souls above Devouring Pits, where the grasping arms of the damned attempt to pull them down and devour them. Those afflicted are then knocked back directly away from their soul. Players must stand underneath their soul just as it reaches the Devouring Pit in order to reclaim it. If they fail, they are instantly slain as their soul is devoured. Standing on a Devouring Pit deals periodic heavy shadow damage. This ability is unlocked when Empowered by Death.
Lord Defilus
- Seething Plaguebolt — Blasts a random target with a burst of nature damage. The target also takes periodic nature damage over time for a short time.
- Mark of Defilus — Those struck by Seething Plaguebolt are also afflicted with the Mark of Defilus, which stacks. The Mark of Defilus makes them vulnerable to Disease Bloom.
- Disease Bloom — All those afflicted with stacks of Mark of Defilus take a burst of nature damage and generate a Plague Cloud every 3 seconds for every stack. Plague Clouds deal periodic nature damage to anyone standing in them and persist for a short time. If any Plague Clouds overlap, they increase in size and damage and their duration is reset. Generating a Plague Cloud consumes a stack of the Mark of Defilus.
- Plague Chains — Defilus spawns a Plague Chain, which will periodically grasp any target with Mark of Defilus and pull them to the chain's location. Anyone caught by the chain cannot move more than 5 yards from it, and take a burst of nature damage whenever the chain grasps another target. Chains can be targeted and destroyed. This ability is unlocked when Empowered by Death.
Lady Carmine
- Mark of Carmine — Lady Carmine will pursue the last target afflicted with the Mark of Carmine while constantly using Crimson Dance. Lady Carmine gains a small boost in damage every time the Mark is applied to a target.
- Crimson Dance — Lady Carmine whirls around madly with her blades, dealing periodic physical damage to anyone nearby. Anyone struck by Crimson Dance will Bleed for additional physical damage for a short time. Every strike from Crimson Dance causes the Bleed to stack, increasing damage and refreshing the duration. Lady Carmine constantly uses this ability while pursuing those afflicted with the Mark of Carmine.
- Scarlet Masquerade — Lady Carmine rapidly charges every target in a cone-shaped area of effect multiple times, dealing periodic physical damage to all targets.
- Blood-Soaked Field — Periodically spawns a Pool of Blood beneath Lady Carmine. Anyone walking over the Pool of Blood receives the Mark of Carmine and causes her to gain Scent of Blood, which increases her movement speed for a short time. This ability is unlocked when Empowered by Death.
Lord Nergal
- Doombolt — Deals a burst of shadow damage to Nergal's primary target.
- Doombolt Volley — Deals a burst of shadow damage to all targets. Cast periodically.
- Open Grave — Nergal conjures an Open Grave, which rises from the earth. Open Graves spawn Exploding Ghouls, which run at random targets and explode, dealing a burst of shadow damage to the target and anyone nearby. Graves can be targeted and destroyed.
- Mark of Nergal — Deals periodic shadow damage to the target, gradually increasing in potency over time. When removed, it will reapply itself automatically after 15 seconds and gain a stack, dealing more damage.
- Phantasmal Stalker — Cast on Nergal's primary target. Summons a Necrotic Phantasm at a random location 60 yards from the the target afflicted with Phantasmal Stalker, which will slowly move towards them and will instantly slay them if it reaches them. If the Necrotic Phantasm is destroyed, another one will instantly spawn at another random location. Every stack of Phantasmal Stalker applied to the target grants an increase to a Necrotic Phantasms health and movement speed. This ability is unlocked when Empowered by Death.
Phase Two - The Horseman Stands Alone
When three riders have had their health reduced to 0 and the last horseman's health has been reduced to 50%, the last horseman standing will absorb the powers of their fallen comrades, replenishing their health, gaining Empowered by Death, and beginning the final phase. Any debuffs currently active that were not placed by the last Horseman will be removed.
Lord Ravenous
Lord Ravenous gains the following ability in phase two.
- Devouring Aura — Deals periodic shadow damage to all targets. Increases in potency whenever Ravenous regains any health.
Lord Defilus
Lord Defilus gains the following ability in phase two.
- Avatar of Desecration — Defilus summons up an Avatar of Desecration to battle his foes. The Avatar will persist as long as Defilus lives.
Lady Carmine
Lady Carmine changes significantly when she is the final horseman. She will now act on threat instead of following targets afflicted with Mark of Carmine. She can no longer move while using Crimson Dance.
- Bloodshed — Lady Carmine gains this ability in phase two. Her attacks will cause her target to Bleed over time for additional physical damage. Every attack causes this debuff to stack, increasing in damage and refreshing the duration.
- Carmine Incarnate — Lady Carmine gains this ability in phase two. Anyone afflicted with Mark of Carmine will cause Lady Carmine to spawn a Carmine Incarnate.
Lord Nergal
Lord Nergal gains these abilities in phase two.
- Shadow of Death — Nergal's shadow grows out behind him in a cone-shaped area. Anyone standing in his shadow takes periodic bursts of shadow damage. Nergal's shadow widens over time, eventually leaving only a small cone-shaped safe spot extending out in front of him.
- Shade of Demise — Nergal summons a Shade of Demise for every character present. Shades appear at the out edge of the area. Shades are inactive when they are not inside Nergal's Shadow of Death, but begin moving towards a chosen target when within the shadow. If a Shade of Demise reaches their chosen target, they are instantly slain. Shades have low movement speed but become faster the longer they are active.
Avatar of Desecration
- Festering Talons — Physical attacks against the Avatar's target causes them to suffer periodic nature damage for a short time. Stacks to 99.
- Heavy Crush — Deals a heavy burst of physical damage to the target. Also causes them to take extra damage from further Heavy Crushes.
- Renewing Plague — The presence of the Avatar of Desecration improves the potency of Plague Clouds spawned by Lord Defilus, causing them to persist for three times longer than normal.
Carmine Incarnate
- Mark of Carmine — Inflicts a random target with the Mark of Carmine. The Carmine Incarnate will pursue that target and ignore all threat.
- Crimson Dance — The Carmine Incarnate whirls around madly with its blades, dealing periodic physical damage to anyone nearby. Anyone struck by Crimson Dance will Bleed for additional physical damage for a short time. Every strike from Crimson Dance causes the Bleed to stack, increasing damage and refreshing the duration.
Strategy
The first phase of the fight involves all four Dark Riders attacking simultaneously - Lord Ravenous - the Hungerer, Lady Carmine - the Bloody Damsel, Lord Defilus - the Scythe of Despair, and Lord Nergal - the Tainted King. The riders do not share health and will employ all of their abilities throughout phase one.
When a rider is reduced to 0 health, they die, but will revive after a short time, becoming immune to damage and gaining a boost to their damage. They will continue to use all of their abilities and will react to threat as they normally would, but they cannot be slain again. All the other riders will regain their health whenever a rider is slain.
When the last living rider has their health reduced to 50%, they will absorb the spirits of the other riders, removing them from the battle. At his point, phase two begins.
In the second phase, the last of the Dark Riders will fight alone, retaining all of their abilities from phase one and gaining new abilities. They will also be healed and have their health and damage greatly boosted. The encounter will end when the final horseman is defeated.
