Lieutenant Horatio Laine is a human and senior Stormwind investigator dispatched to Westfall to investigate a series of crimes. He can be found in various locations around Westfall, including the Jansen Stead, Furlbrow's Pumpkin Farm, and Sentinel Hill, during the Westfall storyline. He was later found just inside the Deadmines at [30.2, 28.6], on the left side of the friendly area, where he starts the Deadmines storyline.

Following the Cataclysm, Horatio led an investigation after the Furlbrows were found murdered.[1] With the help of the Alliance adventurer, he questioned the nearby people about the event, which led to two different leads; gnolls and murlocs.[2] Laine didn't believe that either gnolls or murlocs could have killed the Furlbrows because the murder seemed too perfect. He decided to follow up, given he had no other lead.[3][4]

Since neither of the two suspects had any worthy clues on them, Laine decided to initiate plan "Be on the lookout for Two-shoed Lou", an old informer of Laine's who lived on the Furlbrow's pumpkin farm.[5] Two-shoed Lou pointed Laines detectives in the direction of Jangolode Mine. Inside the mine, the adventurers overheard a conversation between the ogre Glubtok and a shadowy figure about Glubtok joining forces with the shadowy figure.[6] The detectives headed back to discuss the discovery, which Lou refused to talk about, but still told them that a couple of thugs recently showed up and might be of interest for Horatio's investigation. After disposing of the thugs, two shots and a scream could be heard from the front of the farm. Two-shoed Lou had been silenced, and Laine knew it had to be a message to everyone who would rat out the organization behind the Furlbrows murder.[7]

Comparing the evidence with his detectives without much luck, they needed a better lead than a water-soaked letter, some scraps of red cloth, a mysterious conversation between the ogre mage and the shadowy figure and a confession from four thugs who had been killed in the process. Laine ordered his detective to talk to a farmer named Saldean southeast of the Furlbrow's farm.[8] The Saldeans sent the detective to the Alliance stronghold where their adoptive daughter, Hope Saldean, was located. When the detective met Hope, Laine showed up to speak with Marshal Gryan Stoutmantle about the investigation and discussed the worgen Ripsnarl who was locked in a stocks next to them.[9]

Marshal Stoutmantle and his agent Amber Kearnen gave the detectives some leads that pointed them in the direction of Moonbrook,[10] where the Shadowy figure was organizing a rally of homeless and vagabonds to rise against Stormwind for neglecting the people while they prosper.[11] With the help of a shaman, Thoralius, a friend of Gryan, the adventurers were able to assist the detectives by delving into the spirit world.< By walking into the Deadmines and using the incense, provided by Toralius, they were able to witness the defeat of Edwin VanCleef three years ago. After the Alliance adventurers left to tell Gryan of their success, a small girl came out from the shadows saying only one word, "daddy...".[12]

The detective quickly returned to Sentinel Hill to inform Gryan about Vanessa VanCleef, however, the Defias Brotherhood attacked and set the town on fire. Hope then revealed herself to be Vanessa in disguise. When Laine asked her why she had the Furlbrows killed, she answered that they were the only ones who had seen her before the fall of her father. Marshal Stoutmantle later sent the detective back to Stormwind City to inform King Varian Wrynn about the attack on Sentinel Hill.[13][14]

Horatio was later found inside the Deadmines along Stormwind Defenders and Stormwind Investigators, coordinating the fight against the Defias with the  [Stormwind Communicator Mk. II].[15][16]

Trivia

  • Horatio Laine is a reference to Lieutenant Horatio Caine (played by David Caruso), the main character of the TV series CSI: Miami. In the episode teasers, Caine would begin to speak a particularly ominous, and sometimes humorous line, pause for a moment to put his sunglasses on, and then finish his sentence. The artwork for Horatio Laine's TCG card also uses Caruso's features in further tribute to this reference.
  • It is speculated that the reason for the CSI-like questline in Westfall might be inspired by the opening theme of the spinoff series CSI: NY, "Baba O'Riley" by The Who, which starts with the words "Out here in the fields, I fight for my meals," which fits with Westfall and its state after the Cataclysm; full of beggars asking and fighting for food (For example: The situation in Furlbrow's Pumpkin Farm, where Two-Shoed Lou is and how the children appear to rob the corpses of any beggars who are killed). Since Westfall also is a coastal area, Horatio fits with Westfall even more so.
